Monday was an extremely nice one weather wise. I took advantage and visited a small private quarry near Morrisville in Central New York. I've been to this site several times in the past, but the last trip was roughly a year ago. The quarry exposes the Mottville Member of the Middle Devonian Oatkacreek Formation. It is part of the Marcellus Shale which represents the bottom of the Hamilton Group. In terms of fauna it has similarities with the nearby Deep Springs Road and Briggs Road quarry sites which are younger in age. There are also notable differences.

Hi everyone, Billy Mac again. My family was picking through the Marcellus Shale formation in Tully Ny several years ago. We find trilobites, Cephalopods, bivalves, and lots of Crinoids there. One of the boys found this small fossil that looks like a starfish. The Crinoids typically have a ring around the star shape but this does not. I tried getting some close ups but lacking a macro lens I had a hard time. I hope the pics are ok. The fossil is only about 6mm round. So starfish or Crinoid is my question. Thanks for any help.

Marcellus.pdf An article that I stumbled across while researching the Beecher Trilo beds. It is interesting as written, but if you are not interested in oil and gas deposits in the NE, it also contains a lot of info about the stratigraphy of New Yorkand the North East.

Exploring the Devonian Marcellus Shale in Central NY
Jeffrey P posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Three Mondays in April and May, 4/25, 5/9, and 5/16/16 this writer explored a small privately owned quarry north of Morrisville, NY., Madison County. Exposed was the Mottsville Member of the Oatkacreek Formation which represents the uppermost part of the Marcellus Shale which is the lowermost part of the Hamilton Group (Middle Devonian). Hunting Devonian Cephalopods in Hannacroix Ravine, Albany Co., NY.
Jeffrey P posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Today I returned to Hannacroix Ravine, a site in Southern Albany County, NY. (Helderberg Plateau) I last visited over three years ago. It is a beautiful site along a narrow cliff lined ravine, however it is tough to get to requiring a steep decent from the road and making one's way through thick prickly bushes and downed trees. No wonder why I've avoided this place in favor of road cuts and quarries. The stream itself was barely flowing, more just a series of shallow pools and mud. It was a cool, sunny day (temperatures in the 40s and later low 50s), but perpetually shady in the deep ravine.- 15 replies
