A priceless fossil destroyed in WWII has resurfaced in an unusual way Ashley Strickland, November 4, 2022 "The original fossil was highly significant in being the very first complete skeleton of any prehistoric reptile fossil ever found at the time,..." First up, I am not claiming that casts are of equal importance to the actual skeleton. I am annoyed however I come across arguments by anti-collectors that it is not feasible for museums to cast fossils in private collection. The recent rediscovery of the "Proteosaurus" casts should prove beyond any doubt that while a cast isn't on par with the original, they can still provide invaluable research data to paleontologists. https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.220966 I hope that more paleontologists can consider partnering with private collectors and vice versa. I am sure the majority of private collectors would be happy to loan their fossils to museums

Here are some good pictures of the Lyme Regis Museum in Dorset, England that contains Mary Anning memorabilia. I did not realize that the museum is on the site of her house. https://www.mindat.org/article.php/4337/The+Lyme+Regis+museum+

Another one I don't know where to put. The statue has been unveiled I think today. I love looking at her finds in museums, and she was so important. I picked this article because it actually shows what the statue looks like. https://www-bbc-co-uk.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-61520324.amp?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw%3D%3D#amp_tf=From %1%24s&aoh=16531625375122&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com

A happy birthday to Mary Anning. One of the greatest fossil collector and palaeontologist. Who became known around the world for finds she made in Jurassic marine fossil beds of the cliffs of Lyme Regis, Dorset in Southwest England. Her amazing discoveries included the first correctly identified ichthyosaur skeleton; the first two nearly complete plesiosaurskeletons; the first pterosaurskeleton located outside Germany, as illustrated by these lovely coins for the royal mint and NHML.

Following with the recent recognition of Mary Anning the Royal Mint has announced a commemorative coin collection in her name. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-dorset-56182579 As part of the Royal Mint's "Tales of the Earth" series this follows dinosaur coins they minted last year. https://www.royalmint.com/our-coins/events/the-dinosauria-collection/ I find it really interesting how they're also tying in education on British paleontology and paleontologists. The new coins will also feature AR to discuss more about the specific fossils. A little fancy for me but I'm sure the educational information will accompany the Royal Mint website like they did in the Dinosauria Collection. Maybe some nice invertebrate fossils will appear on Tales of the Earth coins in the future.

Popular movie makers decided that the real life of one of the most important paleontologists ever, Mary Anning, was not interesting enough when they created the movie, Ammonite, to be released in September in Cannes, France. The makers decided that they could spice things up by turning the movie into a fictional romance. I kind of wish that PBS or the BBC could have made it instead. Be careful when learning history with something made by popular movie makers. EDIT: My gosh. I see that the BBC did help to produce this movie partially shot on location in Lyme. Hopefully this semi fictionalized account will do Mary justice. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammonite_(film) https://www.google.com/amp/s/entertainment.inquirer.net/385498/saoirse-ronan-kate-winslet--romance-film-to-get-french-premiere/amp https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/mar/20/mary-anning--palaeontologist-women-film

Looking for transcript of letter from Mary Anning to William Buckland
The Amateur Paleontologist posted a topic in Questions & Answers
Hey everyone I'm back again with another Mary Anning-related question... I was recently reading a short biography of Mary Anning (Davis 2012). In the section on Anning's discovery of ink sacs in cephalopod fossils, the author quoted part of a letter from Mary Anning to William Buckland, from the 6th of February 1829. This is the excerpt of the letter: “Do you remember the live creatures you had put in spirits (if so my description may be acceptable). I got two more, one alive and it whenever it was touched ejected a purple fluid (this one Mr. De la Beach [sic: Beche] coveted, and has taken to some Naturalist to be described). The second I dissected at Miss Philpot's, it first had a shell this shape [sketch inserted] very like a smooth pectin only more concave, also a sac or ink bag exactly resembling the small bag (like the gizzard of a fowel [sic: fowl]...” Would anyone know where I can find a transcript of the whole letter? Thanks for any help!- 3 replies

Looking for information on a historic Jurassic squid fossil
The Amateur Paleontologist posted a topic in Questions & Answers
I was recently skimming through one of William Buckland's papers (in Geology and mineralogy considered with reference to natural theology). In the paper, he discussed (and illustrated) a squid fossil that had been found by Mary Anning, in the Lias/Jurassic of Lyme Regis in 1828 (see pic below). Would anyone happen to know in what museum this fossil currently is? Taken from Buckland (1837), plate 44'', fig. 1.- 9 replies

Mary Anning Honored by Lyme Regis (Jurassic Coast, Dorset, UK)
Oxytropidoceras posted a topic in Fossil News
How a poor Victorian woman became a legendary fossil hunter Mary Anning was renowned as a ‘geological lioness’, with her discoveries including the first complete plesiosaur fossil. Soooo under the pretence of a holiday in the South West of England I took Dr B and little Violet to Lyme Regis and we, er, stumbled across Lyme Regis Museum which unbeknown to me had some paleontological specimens inside something to do with a certain Mary Anning I believe. Fortunately the museum has other things that Dr B was interested in (actually we all were), as a teacher of creative writing and a novelist, so my bacon was saved when it became apparent that John Fowles was curator there for two years and Jane Austin visited Lyme regularly. The museum is really kid friendly an there are questionnaires for children of all ages to do with a small prize of a polished piece of semi precious stone. Lots of images to follow Pencil in hand Violet is ready to start her questionnaire.
