A picture of a mastodon tooth found, but not collected, on a beach near Santa Cruz, California was posted on Facebook where a local museum paleontologist noted it. After a long unsuccessful search an APB was posted on Facebook. A few days later the tooth was found and given to the museum. https://www.santacruzsentinel.com/2023/05/31/ancient-mastodon-tooth-fossil-found-on-beach-in-aptos/amp/ This brings up a slightly sticky ethical question. Is it OK to collect a fossil that can’t be legally collected as long as it is in imminent danger and is given to the appropriate authorities? I have had at least two land managers say that if a fossil was in the middle of a trail or about to be washed away, they would want you to bring it to them without penalty. What say you: @Boesse

I have here 5 tooth partials on offer. They're up for sale and the provenance is Florida. Is there enough here to say that they're really Mastodon? These are 2-2.5".

I recently went rock hunting in north Texas, where I stumbled upon this interesting looking fossil in a dried up river bed. This was the only specimen I found of this nature. However, the area around the dried river bed is rich in arrowheads, if that information is useful at all. A friend told me that it looks to be a Mastodon Tooth. Now I'm no expert, but I have my doubts about that. I would really appreciate a second opinion on this. The fossil is roughly 1.5 inches is length, and 1 inch in width. There seems to be grooves around the sides where small crystals have formed. The top of this "tooth" resembled tree rings, while the bottom has irregular, curved lines.
