Hi, I have an Indonesian Meg on matrix. I didn't expect the matrix to be so soft. It's chipping. Is there any way to stabilize it? I was thinking coating it in an Elmers and water mix.

Thanks to a post from Candace ( @thelivingdead531 ) I found out about the Aurora Fossil Museum's box o' matrix that they sell! (all moneys benefit the museum, which was a bonus). I got two Gallon Bags of matrix to sift through and wow....some really great stuff! They send a really good ID sheet too. But of course, there's even more info here on the FF! So here are some of my favorite finds so far. I've only gone through about 6 cups of matrix!! SO MUCH MATRIX! I havn't really done much ID'ing yet (the shark teeth) but my favorite by far is the crab stuff....love those pincers!! And the color of the shark teeth is amazing....purples and pinks -maybe that's why it's Aurora? I certainly have enough to keep me entertained for the upcoming week (which, if you aren't in Texas....we are going to be in the single digit temps (Farenheit) with predicted 4 inches of snow....which is COMPLETELY unprecedented to have two snow storms in a winter...) I'm staying INSIDE with my space heater. And looking through matrix.... Crabby bits Ray Teeth Shark Teeth Fish Teeth Echinoid, Coral and Gastropod a Vert and some unknowns...probably fishy bits

Hi Everyone, I have several verts that are encased within the red matrix from NSR. Has anyone soaked that in a vinegar solution? If so, did it work? Did it hurt the fossils? If there is another way to remove it let me know. Planko

Finally getting around to posting some of my New York Devonian Penn Dixie matrix finds! So much neat crinoid stuff, the occasional trilo bit and some other goodies! Someday, I hope to visit and maybe find some "Big" stuff! The CRINOIDS.....so many amazing shapes. I love Crinoid Geometry: (all are around 2-5 mm) The Trilo Bits: (2-5mm) probably Eldredgeops A friend was trying to type in Pygidium and it auto corrected to Pudgy Idiom.....so yeah. That's what they are now. Plus this nice sized one (5mm) in situ with a crinoid! Gastropods Naticonema lineata Size 5 mm Platyceras size 3 mm also maybe Platyceras? 2mm And some other neat things: Tentaculites Size 7mm Coral Amplexiphylum hamiltoniae Size 2 cm and Bryozoan Reptaria Size 3mm which I think this is also? 5 mm

I have a quick question for those that have bought and gone through their micro matrix from the Aurora Fossil Museum. Did you wash it before going through it, or wash it after you've found your fossils? I got the pack with the mini screen for sifting, but I'm a little afraid to wash it all first and risk losing tiny teeth. How did you all go about doing yours, or what do you think the best way would be?

Spinosaurus Tooth Real, Matrix or Glue

I just got a spinosaurus tooth by my girlfriends dad for christmas and i have a few Questions: 1. Is it real or how much of it is fixed up with some kind of matrix? 2. What is that bright white part glimpsing between the sand? 3. Should i try to free the tooth from the dark/sandy part, to reveal his real beauty? 4. If yes, how? Thank you for your time! -
So i got some fossils i need to prep mostly hard limestone. But i use hand tools. Any tips on how to make it easier? Is there a way to soften the limestone?

Hiya! I got some New York Devonian matrix (Penn Dixie) and would appreciate some help (or confirmation!) with the ID's of a few thingies. Thanks!! 1. Is this a fish tooth perhaps? Size 1/8 inch 2.Is this a Trilobite cephalon? Size 1/8 inch 3. I thought this was a coral, but saw on the Penn Dixie site something that looked like it but it said it was a Fish Plate? Size 1/4 inch 4. Not sure what this is....probably part of a crinoid? Size 1/8 inch 5. Not sure at all. Flat plate Size 1/8 inch 6. Coral Trachypora perhaps? or is it Bryozoan? Size 1/8 inch Thanks for any info!!

Looking for unprepared ammonite nodules or similar pieces

I am looking to trade for some unprepared ammonites, ideally multiples or pieces with other shells on them as well. I have no real preference for the location, and they do not need to be rare species. I can offer shark teeth of all different kinds, megalodon, hastilis, great white and most other species. I also have some mammal fossils and lots of petrified wood. I would post pictures of all but I am away at University for a couple more weeks, and am hoping to arrange a trade for when I get back home for the winter. -
Hi. Found this tooth in Ryan formation matrix from Waurika OK. I found this tooth that looks to me to be from a shark, but does not match any teeth from this locality. It is about 3MM. Is it a shark tooth or something else. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

So, what is the safest way to remove matrix (sandstone and limestone) from calcium shelled fossils. Everything I've read involved acids (some pretty dangerous). What is most ecologically friendly and safest way? I have picks and dramel , but these shells are very thin and almost impossible to remove from the matrix. I am thinking that weaker acids might not work that well and the costs of using more powerful stuff would require a special room with exhaust systems and ways to neutralize the stronger acids to make them environmentally safe. Images are typical of fossils I want to extract. Anyone have a good solution for this issue?

Hunting today. In an area which I had not previously found the rockfossil mix, I found many of them. Here are my most interesting. Here is one , which I believe is whole, where I think I know the genus, and likely the species. looking for confirmations... This is a miocene fossil ... 5 - 23 mya. And # 2 is a broken tooth, Once again miocene fauna. and finally, one where I have no clue... This is an oddly shaped bone.... I am seeking the most basic clues. Which bones look like this one? As always, comments, suggestions, identifications are ALL appreciated!!!! Please do.

I dug this up in Wyoming and was told it's a Mioplosus. The soft sandstone came off with only a bit of effort. Now I'm on to a harder crystalized matrix around the most delicate areas. I don't want to lose any of the carbon so I'm asking for help. I've used dental tools and pen razors so far. I see amazing, beautifully completed fossils on this site with no sandstone on them at all. Is there a method or tool I am unaware of?

I have noticed that in ignaberga. The rocks in matrix are very crumbly. How do i fix it? And for me its pain to prep. Like this shell in the gaps theres really hard matrix. And the black stuff that some told me was magnesium oxide. Its really hard to remove them i need to scrape it off with dental picks. Some said toothbrushes work for them. Tried it sometimes it removes them but not often. Should i just keep to scrape them off? Risk of damaging the fossil? I do have cyanoacrylate Will that help the crumbling rocks?

I have alot of fossils with super thin matrix on them. How do i prep it manually? The rocks are limestone.

Hunting From Home - Texas Pennsylvanian (Bridgeport) Matrix

While I have been out fossil hunting a bit in the Texas Summertime heat I am still having great fun with the Micro Matrix- it sure is pleasant to sit in the AC and poke about for fossils! I had some great little finds in the Mineral Wells matrix, but i am just amazed by the Bridgeport matrix. Even though it's still Pennsylvanian, it's very different from the MIneral Wells stuff! Different formations and all..... What's really neat about the Bridgeport matrix is firstly - it's bigger, typically. and secondly...it's COLORFUL! Reds and golds and purply browns and oranges. It's really lovely stuff!! Here are some of my favorites from the Jasper Creek formation. : First the Echinoid bits - I love these little "cat ghost" plates. 2 mm Most of the spines were incomplete, but I found a nice base and a nice spine, just not all one piece 7mm base and 1 cm spine A funky Echinoid plate 7 mm So many neat Crinoid fragements - arms, cup fragements, columnals, etc! All of these are aprox 5-8 mm except the first one which is a honking 1.5 cm. ) And this crazy crinoid spine that was broken and was regenerating before it died...hence the "dimple" on the end. Thanks fellow Forum Members for helping with that ID! 1 cm Love this crinoid column...I think it's my favorite. It's so Art Deco.....about 3 million years early. 1 cm Some other nice/ interesting finds Neospirifer Brachiopod 5 mm Not sure what this is...I assume a brachiopod. 5 mm Colorful Bryzoans 4 mm Bryzoan on a Crinoid 8 mm Girtycoelia sponges Each are aprox 5-8 mm Gastropods: Pseudozygopleura 4mm Possilbly a Phymataopleura? Not sure of ID 5 mm Possibly Goniasma? 5mm And then there's this thing......a bryzoan encrusting a sponge! 1 cm
