My husband found this really large vertebra today in a south Texas gravel bar. Looks a lot larger than the one bison thoracic vertebra I have, and the extra dorsal processes fused together are confusing to me. I thought maybe it could be a sacral vertebra that has broken off from the others, but I don't see the large foramen that I would expect it to have. Also it looks smaller than some of the measurements for mammoth that @JohnJ has posted for reference before in a post by @fossilus. I also don't think it resembles the possible sloth in the post above. Mastodon? Small mammoth? Large bison? Excited, but stumped. I've had a hard time finding good references about the differences between large mammal vertebra in the past. Any ideas? @digit @garyc @Harry Pristis @Lorne Ledger @Shellseeker

Found in the creek of the Barsch property(Parents) in Parke County Indiana. The ravine is about 60-80 ft deep. Not sure I know one of the Ice ages only got as far south as our neck of the woods. You should see the neolithic stone tools I found in the same area. Thomas Barsch

I am hoping to use a solution to consolidate wet bone specimens that I find immersed in mud, water or on sand bars. Speaking of mega fauna bones in general most of them will fall apart in a few days when drying. Wondering if the acetone based Paraloid could be applied to displace moisture and to consolidate the bone or tusks. The tusks are a real problem. Most are lost after being in the environment for a few days. Ideally I would like to apply something to them as I am removing them from the mud.

Found in an ancestral Mississippi river channel deposit, Deposit is around 50,000 years old. Specimen is completely mineralized. I don't see much material like this, and any thing I offer would be a total guess. Opinions?
