G’cay everyone, My uncle is heading down to Melbourne, Florida tomorrow for a University conference and he was thinking of doing some fossiling down there. Being an Aussie, I do not know much about fossils around Melbourne but have done some research and believe you can collect some micro fossils from the Indian river? He does not plan to travel ouf of Melbourne. Any help regarding sites around Melbourne and tools needed would be appreciated. Thanks, Daniel

I wish I wouldn't have started on this matrix again. I'm not getting anything else done. I just went back through all the old posts, so hopefully I'm not being redundant with my questions. #1 - Wild guess here - some sort of suprascapula? #2 - I don't know whether the bone can be identified. Considering the condition of the bones that come out of this matrix (usually very good), what do you think the chances are that the little gouges on this are feeding traces? #3 - I'm thinking reptile jugal or quadratojugal on this, but just a wild guess. Julianna had poste

Another fine find from Sacha's Merritt Island Micro Matrix. I'm thinking this is modern, and it has a crustacean vibe to it. Any clue as to what this might be? @old bones @MarcoSr

I was digging around in Sacha's wonderful Merritt Island matrix the other day and found this. First let me apologize for the fuzziness of some of the images. My curiosity over-road my patience. Because of the ball and socket, I'm thinking this is a salamander caudal vertebra? If that is correct, would this be a vertebra that would break in an effort to avoid predators? Or could this be where the tail grew back? Mind you, these are just guesses. Perhaps it's not even from a salamander. I will try to get better photos, but this little bugger is so small, I'm having a hard time getting clear imag

These finds are from a shelly matrix collected by TFF member Sacha from a spoil pile in the Indian River near Merritt Island, Florida. As we enter a new calendar year, I realize that I have been working on this matrix for over two years! Lest anyone think that I haven't been absorbed in this matrix all this time, I am posting an image to illustrate how I am cataloging my finds. For now, I am sorting like with like, and attempting to ID the similar items as I go. Now, if I just didn't have to go to work I would be a lot closer to completing my work on this! LOL This picture s

I decided to take a break from coprolites and scan through some of Sacha's Merritt Island Matrix. One thing I see a lot are these vine-shaped traces on many of the shells in the matrix. Does anyone know the trace maker? Secondly, I came across this spiky thing. It looks modern. Is it an echinoid spine of some sort? Thanks for looking!
