Hello from Michigan! I am a complete amateur, knowing very little about rocks and minerals and next to nothing about fossils. However, I've got an eagle eye for the interesting rocks and fossils that can be found on the shores and in the shallows of Lake Michigan and Leelanau Bay. If there is a petoskey stone to be found, I will find it! Petoskey stones and state pride aside, below is something I picked up during my last trip up to the northwest side of the lower peninsula. I'm assuming it's a shell, but my question is: what gives the indentation its smooth, glasslike quality? It's hard to tell from the picture, but the fossil portion is actually quite shiny, and to the touch it feels just like a normal, non-fossilized shell. I've found a few similar patterns before, but never one with a shine to it. I'm so happy to have found this forum. I'm eager to geek out and learn more about the collection I've been building since I was just a kid.

Hi, all. I just returned from a trip to northern Michigan. My wife was kind enough to indulge my fossil-hunting hobby, and I collected specimens in four locations: at a state park in Rockport, a city park in Rogers City, the Lake Huron shoreline in Alpena, and a rare (in Michigan, at least) road cut along a state highway. Here are some of my findings. First is a large Petoskey stone, or Hexagonaria peraninata.

Hello and thank you, My 8 year old daughter seems to have found a possible Megladon tooth in Lake Huron. If I am correct it seems to be worn down considerably. Any comments are welcome. I wet the pronounced ridges for camera view. Thank you Mike

Hello, This appears to be an internal mold/cast of an orthoconic nautiloid, and therefore I am not sure if there is sufficient detail to get an ID. This is from the Niagaran Series, Burnt Bluff Group, Hendricks Dolimite (Fiborn Member) Formation (middle Silurian) of Schoolcraft County, Michigan (Upper Peninsula). Looking for more info on possible identity from those familiar with the Silurian orthocones from this area. @FossilDAWG? Cross section

My son was up in St. Ignace, Upper Michigan when he seen this rock shining in about two foot of water off shore. He knows how I loves rocks and thought it be a good surprise for me. Boy it sure is and was.. Closely looking at it I found it was covered in tiny eggs. Size is a small metal BB. There are even eggs hidden in the cracks and holes of the rock. I have posted a few pics of it. The rock is about 2'x1 1/2' in size. At least a 1000 eggs or more can be seen. There even looks like a foot print where eggs have been laid in. If you know what these are, I sure would love to know so I can tell my grandkids the story of their daddy's great rock find.. Thank you ever much for looking.. Possoms

do you guys know any fossil sites in Michigan, I live in the lansing area and places like rockport state park are a bit far. Do you guys know any places closer that I could go to look for a high quantity of fossils and I wouldn't have to drive very far?

I was at Partridge Point in Alpena, Michigan, and picked these up on the shore. Each is about two inches in diameter, and vary in length from four to 12 inches. There are no markings on the top, but some have hash on the bottom. Help!

Hoping to find someone who knows what this is. Obviously, it's some sort of seashell but I was hoping for more specific information and opinion. I found it while snorkeling last week in Lake Huron (Straits of Mackinaw region). Thanks!

Is this a petoskey stone? I'm familiar with what they look like but this one is hard to tell. It could quite possibly be a petoskey with a smaller pattern, but I can't quite tell. And yes, it was found in northern lower Michigan. (Frankfort, Michigan)

This fossil looks like a honeycomb. I doubt its coral, if you look closely the holes are almost all perfect hexagons. It was found in northern Michigan (lower peninsula) What could this be?

I'm sure this is a common fossil. I have already browsed through goggle, but cant find it. I found it on the beach of lake Michigan in Michigan. The beach was so crowed with crinoid stems fossils, I didn't even bother collecting them. But I find something long shaped with spikey things on the bottom and the top. it wont let me add pictures. never mind, it added the pictures the top and the bottom have spikes. both sides have those ridges

Hello, I'm new yet always picking things up everywhere I go. This was found in a public children's sandbox (Near Flint, MI). Also found in the sandbox were some rocks with crystal dendrite formations, and another mystery tooth I'll post later. Hello everyone! I need your help on identifying this piece. This could possibly be a fossil because of the three plant fiber-like impressions on this small sedimentary stone. My sister found it while we were walking on a trail in Wolverine campground park in Genesee County, Michigan. If this is a fossil, then I think that these are fossil impressions of plant material. The geologic strata in Michigan ranges from the Ordovician up to the Pennsylvanian period. I've checked where Genesee county is on the Michigan geologic map, and the bedrock is of Pennsylvanian. Let me know what you think these impressions are from, thanks.

I found this cool rock in part of a landscape rock bed. Honestly I know very little about fossils and was hoping someone could help me finding out what kind of fossil this is. Since I found it in a man-made rock bed it may be from a different location which is why I've had trouble finding information. The specimen does have crystalline on the inside which I've heard happens sometimes. Please share if you might know what this is!

Hello all, I am looking for tips on putting a collection together. Once your collection is posted can you update it with more fossils? Can they be polished to show definition or should they be rough? I have some that I obviously would not polish but I have some beautiful petosky stones that I have polished. I am planning on taking some photos to start a collection but thought I would ask for any tips or pointers first. Thanks, Kim

I was cleaning up some of my fossils and came across this piece that is broken in half. It was in a box with some of my other fossils from MI. The matrix is softer than any other fossil I have collected feom MI. It is falling apart with a soft toothbrush and water. It is shaped like the inside of a clam. But it is full of small pieces of wash. What is the best way to handle this? Keep cleaning with a toothbrush and remove fossils as they loosen? It has been several years since I collected these... Maybe it isnt old at all?? Thanks, Kim Another view

Hello everyone! Here is a fossil that I need help to identify. Yesterday I found this strange waffle-like impression in this piece of sandstone, while I was walking in the woods in the Saginaw area of Michigan. I know that the fossils that are found in Michigan are mainly from Silurian, Devonian, and Carboniferous period strata. This stone was laying in an old rock pile, that was deposited by farmers who plowed their fields. The stone is 5 1/8" x 3 1/8", and the impression itself stretches 3 1/2" across the rock. The small dark brown cube next to the stone is clay that I rolled over the Impression to make a positive cast of the fossil. From this positive, I can tell that the fossil has a snake skin pattern surface. This could've been an impression of some sort of marine or terrestrial plant, I have some ideas of what the fossil could be, but I need your help to identify and confirm what species this was. I hope these photographs are helpful, and feel free to ask for better pictures of the stone.
