Xyne grex (Extinct Herring Relative) - Jalama Beach in Southern California

Found some nice Miocene period fish fossils in 2020. They have been ID'ed as Xyne grex (Extinct Herring Relative) but other and larger fish species fossils as well as shark teeth have been found there too. Hey, going through some finds of last year i came across this tiny Hexanchid tooth. 0,9cm x 0,5cm, Miocene/Pliocene, Antwerp area, Belgium I've seen Hexanchid posterior teeth before and they look quite different.. (from the book 'Neogene Sharks of Antwerp' by Stephane Knoll) Could mine be juvenile Notorynchus or Hexanchus? Thx, Dries

Pictured below is an otolith from an indeterminate cetacean, from the Miocene of the Calvert Cliffs Formation. I've had this particular specimen in my collection for some time, but was under the impression that otoliths weren't diagnostic to any degree, but my research surrounding cetacean dentition for a dolphin tooth I plan to purchase soon has proved otherwise, so I thought it would be worth putting it to the experts. Unfortunately I can't find my ruler to provide a sense of scale for the photos, but the specimen is approximately 4cm long and 1.5cm tall. Edit* Title changed to say shark skeletal elements ( previously said bones). This is an interesting topic that was brought up by my mentor and vertebrate paleontology professor during a lecture about a year ago. He mentioned that for some reason there seems to be a higher occurrence of shark bones and relative scarcity of teeth in the Astoria formation. That is the verbage he used. I am willing to bet this is some kind of collection bias where people just aren't recognizing the teeth as often as skeletal elements for some reason. I haven't been able to find information on Google scholar or really anywhere else that has provided information on depositional environments that would favor the preservation of shark skeletal elements over teeth, especially where there are plentiful well preserved invertebrate shells. Most of the fossils are locked in concretions or embedded in concrete-hard sandstone. There is intermittent softer sandstone and siltstone, but seems like most of the vertebrate and invertebrate fossils occur in the harder layers. This is something that has interested me as a research topic, but I haven't been able to make it out in awhile to do any collecting of my own. It would be interesting to set up a transect say from Newport to Lincoln City, take a group out and just collect fossils over a period of time across the transect to get an idea of fossil type, frequency, etc. And see if there really is something lending itself to a higher frequency of shark skeletal elements. On a side note it does seem like there is an usually high occurrence of young vertebrates such as pinnipeds and whales in the sections of the formation I've collected. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the matter as well as any additional insights you may be able to provide. What do you think?

Hello! I have been fossil hunting for quite a bit now and this is my first ever (what appears to me at least) fossilized bone! I would love just a general direction on what kind of animal it could’ve been- I know this area is very well-known for marine fossils, so of course my first thought would be some find of fish bone? Or I could be totally wrong, and it could be a more recent mammal! Any insight is so much appreciated- all I want to do is expand my knowledge. Thank you!

Yippee! The weather was nice enough today that I could finally go off for an extended ride on my bike. And of course I decided it would be best to make the hour's trip out to my favorite Miocene shark tooth site. So I packed my trusty Estwing hammer, a ziplock bag and my kneepads into the saddle bag. I even thought to take along my camera, so I can show a few pics. I however stupidly oversaw my water bottle which I had just put aside for a moment before I took off and didn't notice it until I got there, but my tongue didn't get all that dry and there was a nice little restaurant on the way home where I could wet my whistle. I spent about 2 1/2 hours chopping away at the outcrop and came up with a few nice ones. Here's what my dig looked like about halfway through. And here are a few in situ photos. There were a lot of uncomplete ones missing the roots or tips, so I just left a pile for the next group of locals that come along. I ended up packing 12 of them away and as is usually the case with shark teeth, I already had them all cleaned up just a half an hour after I arrived home. I decided to give most of them to my friend who lets me use his workshop and just hung onto the last 2 pictured below for the collection, since I already have a very good selection from this spot. The Carcharodon hastalis at the very bottom was one of the largest I've ever found there and despite the fact that it's missing the root and a bit of the tip, I got so excited when I found it that I forgot to take an in situ photo. I collected this bone earlier this week in an outcrop of the Calvert Formation (Early-Middle Miocene) in Maryland. I found several vertebrae in close proximity to each other that I have tentatively identified as dolphin. I will share them after I finish cleaning and prepping them. Next to one vertebra was this mystery bone. Any idea what it could be? Maybe part of the dolphin sternum? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Found in a block of matrix on the western side of Stratford Hall during a NHSM trip. Length is about 0.75 inches (1.9 cm). Order of photos: Front, side, backside, top-down, underside.

1 more from the same location, a vertebra. Photos 1 & 2 are the front and back, while 3 & 4 show top and bottom. One end appears flat, while the other is crudely pointed. Axis vert? I was thinking small mammal. Thoughts? thanks!

2 Chesapeake Beach mammal fossils (jaw section, tooth) ID request

hello, I have 2 items from Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, USA. Exposures are Miocene. These were found as float, on the beach. The first is a jaw section, approx. 8cm in length, with a broken piece of one tooth present. Porpoise? The second is a tooth crown, approx 18x13 mm and two ridges. I found this concretion with something inside, looks like half of a nodule with something bone alike. Found it while sifting for Miocene shark teeth in a clay quarry in the Antwerp region in Belgium. I think the gravel i'm sifting is Pleistocene with reworked Miocene as i've found pieces of Mammoth bark in it as well. This piece leaves me clueless tho.. The concretion measures 9cm x 5cm sorry about the poor quality pics, that's the best i can get out of my smartphone... Thx!

Recently found this quite large and heavy (piece of) bone by the Schelde river shores in Antwerp, Belgium. Most pieces that wash up here are Mio/Pliocene but actually most Neogene layers are represented in the area as well as Pleistocene and more recent. I'm thinking whale because of the size, but honestly i don't have a clue. Measurements are 22cm x 10cm x 5cm thanks in advance! Dries

I participated in the Spring meeting of the Florida Paleontological Society this week end.. Saturday I was up at 5 am to drive to Gainesville and see some old friends including @digit. We had presentations from Paleontology students on their field projects and the treat of visiting the Paleontology research lab collections (Vert, Invert, Plants) under the guidance of UF experts. Dinner, discussion, and an auction in the evening . Saturday was jammed full. I have taken a set of photos which I'll share in another thread.. hopefully tomorrow. This is about Sunday. A field trip to Haile Quarry in Newberry, Fl. We are allowed in the Quarry for three hours and time flies when I am hunting fossils.. We moved twice looking in three sites.. I found many seashells and a few echinoids, including a gigantic one where I can not recall the name. I will likely get to a thread on my other finds Wednesday (Hunting again Tuesday). In this case, I wanted to show my prize and ask for Identification help before going to sleep. At the last site was a Sink hole, which had been partially excavated by a team of UF graduate students some decades ago, They found all sorts of bones, skeletons, teeth , Miocene aged. and I only had twenty five minutes before we left.. It was not sufficient to find a lot of quantity. but 10 minutes in, I found this Rhino upper Molar just laying on the ground. I had to pinch myself. I was NOT expecting Rhino. Note that Hunter_Schreger Bands are visible in the enamel, just as we would expect. So the 1st question is : Florida had 3-4 Rhino species. 1) Florida Rhino (Aphelops mutilus) From Alachua Co., Florida Lived ~8 million years ago 2) Panama Rhino (Floridaceras whitei) Adult (cast) and Juvenile From the Republic of Panama, Central America 3) Teleoceras proterum Lived ~10 million years ago 4) Menoceras ("Crescent Horns"[4]) is a genus of extinct, small rhinocerotids endemic to most of southern North America and ranged as far south as Panama during the early Miocene epoch. It lived from around 30.7—19.7 Ma, existing for approximately 11 million years. For the time being, I am thinking Teleoceras proterum, the one I know best. Here is an upper jaw of Teleoceras proterum. Teleoceras fossils have been found inside the Haile quarry. I have started at this photo above. It is not a perfect match, but I am thinking an upper left P3... Comments/Suggestions appreciated. Jack

Hey all, Looking for input from all the wonderful people I've called upon in the past! I found this tooth in 2022 sifting at GMR. Upon first glance I thought it to be a small dolphin tooth but after digging it out of my collection recently I put it under a higher power magnifier and actually looked at it with attention. I'm starting to believe this maybe a mammal tooth or canine specifically. I've been to GMR many times and have found a distal bone of a mammoth and a hoof bone of an ancient peccary which was identified by the curator of prehistoric animals at the Indianapolis State Museum. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated so I can try to file and put away for safe keeping! Thanks all! Steve

A calcite replaced miocene conus fossil I found. The rock itself was collected early last year but I cracked it open to look for echinoids. The calcite is paper thin and very fragile, and the inside of it is also filled with numerous crystals. Dam formation Abu samra member -
One beach hunt and two digs yielded four cow shark and a bunch of small teeth, some of which may have been in my last photo. The cow shark, my focus, are all new but frustrating; cannot say for sure if two really have non-serrated first points. Possibly broken? Too much cold water in the creek to hunt for a few more days.

Hello Everyone, we are looking for help in identifying a fossilized tooth that was found in deposits dated back to the miocen-badenian age in Poland, Europe. That site is knows from Gigantopecten mussels fossils and Carcharias, Galeocerdo, Diplodus fish teeth but such tooth has never been found there before. Thank you for any identification ideas.

These are very common at an exposure of what I believe to be the Monterey formation (Miocene) in Santa Barbara county, California. They look quite different from most pectinid fossils I've seen in southern CA. Any ideas on ID, or references I should take a look at for this area? Thanks!
