  1. Kinda late to start up a long post about my trip today...so I'll just say it started like this . A bit more snow that expected. Crossing the summit @ 7500 feet above sea level. Back in January there was much LESS snow than this. I was hoping the downhill side was nice and dry. It was...turned out to a beautiful day with 63 F degrees before a front blew in. And the trip ended like this...the juvenile raptor sculpture is about a meter tall and the adult is about 2 meters. Looks to be made of CNC cut 3/16ths or 1/4 inch mild steel. Probably waterjet cut. Pretty cool. The toe claw suggests it's a Utahraptor, but with a T-Rex head? Stay tuned...I'll fill in the trip tomorrow.

    Morrison theropod tooth

Hello, I have a theropod dinosaur tooth and the seller's label is Allosaurus. I would like to hear the opinions of the members. The location is the Morrison Formation ,Bone Cabin Quarry, Wyoming CH:2.1cm CBL:1.4cm CBW:0.6cm Mesial Density: 14.5/ 5 mm Distal Density: 17.5/ 5 mm Mesial serrations occupy 80% of the crown height (Perhaps it's wear?) Its base shape doesn't look like a J-shaped one Thank you.
  3. There is an isolated exposure of the Morrison formation nearby the area I have visited to hunt fossils the last few weeks. The shape is an elongated oval and measures 1.15 km wide X 3.75km long. This image is a small section of it. My question is this: Would it be worth exploring, scouting, hiking this area for invertebrate fossils? It is on BLM public land but keep in mind that vertebrate fossils are strictly off limits for collecting. The only reason I would even consider visiting it would be to hunt for invertebrate or plant fossils. The majority of the area surrounding this "island" of Morrison formation is Cretaceous period with the Juana Lopez Member of the Mancos Shale where I'm finding 4 species of ammonites. In my mind the old adage : when on a fox hunt, don't stop to chase rabbits...seems to apply to my question and for that reason I have yet to visit the Morrison formation spot. This case the fox is Ammonites and the Rabbits are dino bones, teeth, etc. It could be anxiety causing at worst and finding some nice invertebrate fossils at best. The anxiety being walking right past exposed bones, carnivore teeth, etc... which I wouldn't touch nor even photograph. The temptation to share would be another facet of the anxiety. Like - "Wow! I found Allosaurus teeth this weekend at ________ down in the Utah desert!" Wiki says this about the Morrison fm fossil content : Along the rivers, there were fish, frogs, salamanders, lizards, crocodiles, turtles, pterosaurs, crayfish, clams, and mammaliforms. The dinosaurs were most likely riparian, as well. Hundreds of dinosaur fossils have been discovered, such as Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus, Torvosaurus, Saurophaganax, Camptosaurus, Ornitholestes and several stegosaur species. A satellite view of a section of this Morrison fm "island"... The Junipers are probably 10 to 15 feet tall and a similar diameter.

    Recent Fossil Find

Hi all! I was hoping I could get some assistance identifying some fragments that lie around two small bones that are visible. It seems that whatever the shell like pieces are, that they do wrap around whatever is encased inside the rest of the rock as they also appear on the underside. It looks as if it actually wraps around the fossil, almost like skin since it does contour around. Underneath the fragments are a porous, almost spongy tissue substance between the fragment and the actual bones. Thanks in advanced! I've been searching nonstop online and have not been able to tell what they were.
  5. I am a big fan of jurrasic sauropods and I therefore spend most of my time on preparing what is left of them. However, for a change I now started working on a slab of rock that seems to contain a series of fused sacral vertebrae by a theropod. The verts seem to belong to Allosaurus. Maybe not as cool as a sauropod fossil but I think that Allosaurus was a fascinating creature as well. The bones have been collected many years ago at Dana Quarry, Teen Sleep, Wyoming.

    Torvosaurus? Ceratosaurus?

Hello, Is this a Torvosaurus or Ceratrosaurus tooth? It was originally ID'd as a torvo tooth but then changed to Ceratrosaurus, however there is still a possibility it is Torvosaurus. The tooth is 1.2 inch long and was collected in Moffat County Colorado. Aditional information: CH 29.0mm, CBL 14.8mm, 6.9mm, anterior denticle density 3.6/mm, posterior denticle density 3.8/mm

    Diplodocus vertebra?

Hello! I am wondering is this caudal vertebra is from a diplodocus. I have learned over the years that sellers just slap a ‘Diplodocus’ label on anything that looks remotely diplodocid like. It is 22 cm long and 19 cm high and collected from Dana quarry Wyoming. Thanks.

  21. I found something from our favorite auction site that looks very interesting, however I have my doubts if it is legitimate or allosaurus, and would like to hear someone else's input. Seller describes the item as a fused humerus and radius, but I am guessing they mean ulna and radius, of an Allosaurus, found in the morrison formation. Do anyone have information regarding whether these bones even fuse in theropods, or whether they even resemble the ulna/radius bones of Allosaurus? Thanks

    Diploducus tooth

Hello! I bought this 1'' Diploducus tooth a couple weeks ago, But I've seen other people who have teeth that look the same as mine and theirs is labeled as "Diplodocidae" teeth, mine is labled as Diploducus sp. So I was wondering if it's just a Diplodicidae tooth or still a Diploducus sp.

    Allosaurus tooth?

Hi Everyone! I've been looking around at some potential Allosaurus teeth I'd like to buy but before I do I'd like to make sure that's actually what they are and learn how to id them, as I'm assuming the Jurassic fossil market is as rife with misidentification as the Cretaceous one. Here's one I'm curious about, very clearly a Theropod tooth. Apparently found in the Morrison Formation of Washakie County, Wyoming and measures 1.08 Inches in a straight line measurement. So what do you all think? Is it Allosaurus? How do you know? Is it even possible to pin a Morrison tooth on Allosaurus or is there some other obscure genus with nearly identical teeth in that formation I don't know about like a Daspletosaurus/Gorgosaurus "Tyrannosaur indet." situation? Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.
