An afternoon excursion to the Frankstown Fossil site North of Tupelo, MS in Fall of 2023 resulted in one single shark tooth and a portion of an oyster shell. I am embarrassed to reveal that after about 30 shovels of sand sifted, the only tooth I found was in the prior sifting detritus of another fossil hound. Expedition injury report: I scraped my arm as I fell on the slippery clay attempting to descend into the creekbed. Win some and lose some. Time with an old friend was the best reward for this fossil expedition. darrell Barnes

I found this vertebra in the Late Cretaceous Prairie Bluff Chalk of Mississippi. I am fairly sure that it is a batoid vertebra but the form does not match the typical batoid vertebra that I am used to finding so I was hoping to get some confirmation. I am not used to what looks like the beginning of a process on the top of the vertebra. I am more used to seeing the type of batoid vertebra on the left. This one is just different enough to warrant caution before ascribing an identification.

A few weeks ago I completed a road trip from New Jersey to Texas for work and although Hurricane Ida sadly canceled nearly all of my plans, I was able to sneak in a couple quick fossil collecting stops. One such stop was at an outcrop of the Oligocene Vicksburg Group in Mississippi. I was primarily looking for echinoids- I sadly did not find any- but ended up finding this small shark tooth. I am by no means an expert on shark teeth and have tried in vain to research Oligocene sharks of Mississippi. Does anyone know what shark this tooth is from or of a good resource where I might be able to figure it out? It strikes me as similar to photos of Carcharhinus gibbesi from the Chandler Bridge Formation (see D in attached photo). Any help is greatly appreciated! Hi everyone! I just researched and planned my very first hunt ever tonight. I'm from Minnesota, but am currently living in Mississippi for work. It took some time to find the information needed in order to pick a few possible locations without driving five or more hours. Here's what I've come up with for my trip plan. All of this will be river/stream sifting, or outcroppings from the rivers/streams. All three are options, but Merrill, MS is likely my first trip due to the fact two rivers from the North converge there possibly depositing older Cretaceous fossils as well. -Waynesboro, MS (2hr) Chickasawhay River — Catahoula Formation — Oligocene — 23my - 34.9my -Merrill, MS (1.25hr) Pascagoula River — Pascagoula and Hattiesburg Formation — Miocene — 5.3my - 22.3my -McLain, MS (1.25hr) Leaf River — Pascagoula and Hattiesburg Formation — Miocene — 5.3my - 22.3my Potential Recoveries Expected: Shark/Fish Teeth Shell Fragments Inverts Snake Vertebra Echinoids Others washed downstream from Cretaceous period Thanks for reading! -C

My wife and I made a brief trip this weekend out to Blue Springs, MS to poke around the Coon Creek Formation. We only walked around for ~1.5 hours, but we didn't get skunked. There was quite a bit of material to be found after the recent heavy rains, but the best finds of the trip were my first crab, and a particularly nice Squalicorax tooth! I've gathered a decent collection of similar teeth from the nearby Frankstown fossil park, but this one easily beats them all. As the temperature increased, we were even greeted by a rather well behaved Dekay's brown snake. Enjoy the pics, Caleb
