How to Select a “Probable Area” to Begin Digging

Many Needmore formation sites are located where I live. I was wondering how does one go about selecting a “probable spot” to begin digging/splitting shale. Is there some trade secret that I am unaware of or is it pure luck? -

Hello, As a follow up to my previous post, I wanted to see if anyone can help me Identify some of the things I found or confirm my suspicions. all material was found in Wardensville, part of the needmore formation in the Lost River quarry. #1 lets start with the biggest stumper, I have absolutely no Idea what this thing is or even if it is a fossil. my best guess is a possible trilobite feeler, but even then I am not familiar enough with their anatomy to make that call. failing that, some sort of soft bodied invertebrate perhaps? #2 -
Hi all! Went on an expedition to Wardensville this weekend to try out some new equipment, decided to go to the Lost river quarry and try my hand at shale splitting. The drive was nice and uneventful. but eventually I made it to the spot. The scree was more treacherous than I expected, has to use my new rockhammer as a pick of sorts to help anchor myself. this was my very first time to this locality, doing anything like this for that matter, so I had no idea what I would find if anything. after scrambling up to the rock wall and looking over the texture my eyes were met with the fir

Freshly found. Found in/very close to Needmore Formation near Petersburg WV. More sandstone than shale, but shale was just above. Lots of brachiopods nearby. Would love someone to tell me it's a rare ammonite or similar. Thoughts? ID help? Thank you.

Hey again, this is a very tiny ~.5cm shell that I found some time ago at the regular road cut at the Lost River exposure of the Mahantango Formation. I would guess it’s a Gastropod or something similar but if it could be narrowed down any further I would be elated. Thanks guys!

Here with another fossil, and I’m pretty sure this time it’s actually a fossil Distinct striations on a smooth impression in the shale. Just half an inch longways and about .4 inches tall. Found at the regular Lost River cut, Middle Devonian age. Thanks guys!
