  1. Found this specimen along with 2 small pieces of coral while swimming in a lake in Southern NJ. (Also found another piece that I'm trying to have identified here.) 1cm in both directions and about half a cm thick. Appreciate any insight!
  2. Tooth has flat facets running most of the length from the crown to the tip, a hollow crown, and is just under an inch long.

    BIG BROOK Fossil Finds

My first trip to big brook with the boys yielded lots of cool stuff. I’m a fossil noob but read all the forum posts, facebook, big brook website, fossil guy sit, etc before posting. I have some other pictures to post but these i feel are the strongest change of “being something” What is everyone’s thoughts? coolest stuff i think we have, crab arms/claw, a shrimp?, jaw bone, enamel from dinosaur teeth, shark teeth, fossil clams, impressions of clams, sea turtle bone. I am least sure of 9d though i’m hoping it is a tooth of some kind, could very well be a rock!
  4. I am about 84.9% sure that this is a fragment of a mosasaur tooth. However I have been wrong when trying to id Mosasaur teeth before so I just wanted a few more opinions. It is from Big brook New Jersey and was found in May 2023.
  5. I fount this a few years ago around Livingston, New Jersey and do not quite know what it is. It is not completely symmetrical and does not quite match any of the other fossils that I have seen found in this area. I did see a Cycad fossil that had some resemblance but the less exposed side looks a little more different. It may also be a fish scale, tree bark, or even nothing. I think it is from the Towaco formation of the Lower Jurassic based on the location and the color of the rock. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Scale is in inches.

    Cretaceous NJ Unknowns

Following up on a recent trip report of mine from Big Brook with some unknown fossils. No experience in this area form me, help is greatly appreciated. Tried to approximate as well as I could 1. has these surface striations that do not appear to be patterns, rounded on one end. My hope is coprolite. 2. has one similar striation across the middle. Bottom of this specimen looks like it has been sharpened to a point Pretty unsure about all of these, but all of them have some surface marking/feature that show it is a fossil. 7. very weathered but appears to be a tooth 8 & 9. Appear to almost fit together, a feature like a straight line runs down the side of these pieces 10. smooth, but comes to a point on the ends, not sure if this is a fossil 12-14. Rock or bone fossil?

    Newbie - Big Brook

Newbie here, to the forum and fossil hunting. I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and have a couple spots within an hours drive, however so far have only visited Big Brook on a few different occasions with my family over the past month. Definitely addicted! Thought I would share some of my finds. All are fairly common, but totally amazing to me. Not sure on the ID of a few of them, and some I'm not sure if they are even fossils. I find your mind tries to make something out of nothing, especially with rocks. In any case, thanks for looking, and appreciate in advance any feedback, good or bad! 1979 3 3/4" Boba Fett for scale
  8. Just found this while hunting today at Big Brook. Not sure if it's fossil or modern, but I'm pretty sure it's a bear claw. Can anyone tell me what I've found here? Thanks!

Fossil Leaf from Big Brook New Jersey

Hi everyone, This is the first fossil plant I’ve ever found at big brook in NJ. I found an orange colored rock in the stream bed and saw some odd patterns hidden within. Later when I got home, I tried to take off a layer of rock, and to my suprise, there was a leaf impression. There were other plant impressions within other parts of the rock. I would love to know how old it might be, or if it is more recent and not a fossil at all. Thanks! FullSizeRender.mov
  10. My brother found this tooth years ago at big brook. It looks reptilian to me, and seems to have the root preserved as well.

    Items found in NJ

Hello! We found these two items in Monmouth County, NJ over the weekend. They were in a stream. They may just be rocks, but they look different than anything else we found! If you have any idea if they are rock or something else, I would love to know. Pen included for size. Thank you!
  12. This vertebra was found on a NJ beach. It measures about 2.75 by 2.5 inches in size. It appears to be a bone and not a fossil. Just curious what it is from. Thank you in advance.
  13. I have been going over some of my recent Ramanessin Creek NJ finds and these two items I am not sure about. I am thinking one may be an osteoderm, piece of turtle shell or concretion. It is fairly convex which makes it more confusing. I am leaning towards a concretion, but I am very new to this and am still learning. The other item may be a fish tooth or a rock that looks like a tooth. I am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction as to what these actually are. Thank you in advance.

    A Big Mystery from Ramanessin

I spent a VERY fruitful day at Ramanessin, but this one object has me both stumped and intrigued. Sorry for the terrible hotel room photos, and the pen for scale. Also have an altoids box for scale (heh). this object appears to be an internal mold of some kind, it is entirely fine mudstone with some fine gravel. The back (non-pictured) side is broken and shows the mudstone texture well. There is a distinct “cutting edge” to use tooth terminology on the intact side of the item. It has very distinct striations, and frankly it looks like a large.. internal mold of a tooth? I have no idea what the heck. Sadly, on emailing David Parris, I find out he retired 5 months ago :/
  15. I've been collecting a few times a year at Big Brook for years now and have a pretty large collection of NJ fossils. I would love to bring some of my stuff to them to get their thoughts and to see if there's anything they would be interested in taking into their collection, but they seem to have virtually no online presence... is there a way to link up with them?
  16. Found this on a trip to Big Brook yesterday and having a tough time figuring out what it is. The tooth is missing the tip, but appears to be quite narrow, with a strong curve that would eliminate xiphactinus as a possibility. It looks too narrow to me to be a mosasaur tooth and has no visible carinae. Is there any chance it could be a plesiosaur tooth? Thanks for the help!

    NJ Miocene/Eocene Find

Found in NJ Miocene/Eocene stream. It has weird grooves on the outside patina, and on the inside has corresponding grooves. It comes to a point as you can somewhat make out in the third image. Any ideas what it could be?
  18. Ordinarily I would throw something back if I didn't have at least a tentative ID when I saw it or some strong reason to believe it's a fossil, but this I really wasn't sure about. I have no idea what they might be, but I had never seen a concretion quite like them before in the brook, and I found it even more bizarre that I ended up finding two of them. Any thoughts?
  19. Found this on a trip to Big Brook today. I have found a piece of devonian coral at the Brook before that I was told here had probably been carried from the devonian deposits in upstate NY by glaciers, any chance this is another?
  20. A bivalve fossil I found at Big Brook yesterday. First one like it I've ever seen, so thought it might be something interesting.
  21. I found this fragment of what I think is bone at Big Brook yesterday. Is there any way to tell what it might be from? The shape and density of the fibers kind of remind me of some of the pieces of mososaur jaw I've seen posted, but I don't know if there's any way to ID it from such a small piece.
  22. Hello! I am taking a few days off next week and I plan on resuming my favorite hobby (fossil hunting!) for a day in hopefully wonderful weather! I currently moved to Camden county and while I usually fossil hunt in Big Brook, I was thinking of a change of pace and maybe switching it up a bit and taking the long drive to Calvert Cliffs (or somewhere else, depending on recommendations). Anyways, It would be my first time in awhile fossil hunting at a place outside of Big Brook and I was curious if anyone has been to Calvert Cliffs recently, and if it is worth going to (for me it would be a 4 hour drive). Of course, whether a place is actually worth going to also comes down to personal preference but any insight would be greatly appreciated! In addition, other recommendations are also welcomed! :-) Thank you!
  23. Hey all, Could I get another set of eyes on this (circled tooth)? I found this probably 2 years ago at this point in the cretaceous exposed Big Brook. I have had this labelled as "Enchodus" but relooking at it it seems a little off with my other Enchodus teeth. Is this just a weathered Enchodus? Is it simply a different tooth than the fang and curved tooth pictured along side it? Or am I off by what fish this came from? Appreciate the second set of eyes!

    Partial NJ Theropod Tooth?

Hi guys, I found this partial tooth in Big Brook in Monmouth. It's very worn but my best guess from looking at the squished in bottom shape seems to point to it coming from a dino theropod. Possibly dryptosaurus? Please let me know your thoughts.
  25. My past two trips to Ramanessin Brook in Holmdel, NJ have been especially productive. Resulting in much larger teeth and much more diverse finds, Ramanessin has proven to be a much better spot than Big Brook for me. Here are the finds from the first trip: Many large anterior goblin shark teeth; a very large crow shark tooth; some very nice mackerel shark teeth; two pycnodont teeth; coral; a large ghost shrimp claw; a large ammonite fragment; a scallop with both shells intact; what I believe to be a fragment of a very large sawfish tooth (though it does seem especially striated for a sawfish) Finds from the second trip: More large goblin shark teeth (one pathological); another large crow; some very curvy mackerel shark teeth; small shark vert and a fragment of another; some sort of bony fish jaw; various sawfish crowns; a beaver tooth (more insight as to its age would be greatly appreciated); two Gastropod molds; ratfish jaw; I believe the two large fossils to the right are a coral imprint and possibly a lobster claw another pic of the beaver tooth; it seems hollow inside chewing surface seems worn; leads me to believe it is a modern adult beaver tooth up close pic of the lobster claw; noticeable “dots”
