Hello my name is Philip, I just came across this forum when I was looking for information about preparation tools for fossil processing. I am 34 years old and have been collecting fossils and minerals in my area for years and am currently expanding my workshop. I have a degree in prehistoric archaeology but work in biology and am very interested in marine fossils and hope to learn more about them here

Hello everyone, and thanks for making this forum happen! I am from the Houston area. My kids and I got into fossil hunting when we randomly stepped into petrified oysters and bivalves in the TX hill country. Since then, we've been fossil hunting, mainly in the Dallas area. Usually it's just an excuse to get out, but finding old, strange looking, beautiful things does not get old. Happy to join for trips here and there. All the best!

Hi folks! I'm relatively new to the Dallas area (about 4 years now) and very new to rockhounding/fossil hunting. I've done some of the basic hunting in the fossil parks, but I'm looking to branch out and find new things. I keep seeing the Atco and Kamp Ranch names thrown around, but I have no idea how to actually locate them. I understand that they are part of larger formations, but as someone who doesn't have any training in natural sciences I'm not really sure where to look. The few times I've attempted to find somewhere off the beaten path I've been unsuccessful at finding anything besides calcite. If anyone is willing to share any helpful hints or trusty references I would appreciate it!

Howdy. While this account is being controlled just by me, (you can call me Jay), I will be posting on behalf of my family oftentimes, for example in the fossil id page. Been on here for a week or two, really enjoying the plethora of knowledge and info that is on this forum. We are fairly new to the fossil world, and we have just been hunting for the last year. I’m pretty new to the collecting thing. I’ve made it out about a dozen times over the past 2 years and I really enjoy the excitement of finding sharks teeth and ray plates in southern Maryland.

Hello from San Antonio. We just moved here in November last year from ravaged SW Florida. Too many hurricanes. Ian destroyed our place so we decided to have fresh start. Our only son moved his family here too. I have very close bond with my granddaughter and she is fascinated by rocks, crystals, gems and of course fossils. We go looking everywhere at stones to see what we can find. Love finding site to help figure out what is out there and to help know what we're looking for..

Hi everyone! I'm Bastiaan and I love anything (pre)historic. I started searching for (mainly pleistocene) fossils on the Dutch beaches, where I've found a few nice fossils already! My favourite would be a little piece of jaw with a molar from a woolly rhino. Hoping to find more cool stuff in the future and to connect with fellow enthusiasts.

Hello all! I am back in action after a few very long years of health issues. Lots of surgery and pills and therapy, but I'm finally able to do the things I enjoy again! Have the ScienceMobile loaded and ready for an East Coast, USA, endurance run. Will be hitting some sites in Kentucky, Virginia, Pennsylvania but most importantly a life-long dream trip to Mazon Creek. Also have a Kemmerer and Copper Basin run planned before my students return! Got most of my fine motor skills back, so I have both fossil preps and museum cast projects to share in the future. Lots of catching up to do!

Hi, I'm new to the forum and relatively new to fossil hunting. I've been collecting rocks for years, but only last year realized how easy it is to find fossils in my new state. I'm hoping the folks around here can help me identify what I find! I'll start with a nodule I collected at Mazonia-Braidwood State Park (IL) yesterday. Three views of the same fossil. Any thoughts on what this is?

Hello Everyone! I'm very happy to have found "The Fossil Forum". I've been interested in all sciences and especially topics with areas associated with this forum. I found my first fossil when I was 8 years old back in the late 1960s. I was living in Missouri when my Mom and Dad took the family on a month long trip in our station wagon pulling our pop-up camper. We were visiting family and friends across the country as we travelled. We stopped in Fort Worth to visit some friends of my Dad in Texas. They took us to Lake Texoma to look for fossils. They told us that there were a lot of fossils that you could find just walking around the edges of the lake. While my family proceeded to walk around looking, I stood on a large rock looking out into the lake and then down around my feet. It was then that I discovered I was standing on a very large fossil. My eyes got really big and I decided then and there that I wasn't leaving without it. I was not very strong, being a skinny little kid and the fossil was very heavy. But that wasn't going to stop me. I carried it several hundred feet to where the car was parked and just waited for everyone else to return. It ended up riding the rest on the trip in the camper along with other fossils found by the family. Unfortunately about 4 years later, we moved away and my fossil was left in our car port in Missouri when our stuff was packed up! I didn't discover this fact until after we unpacked everything. I was devastated. However, there was a happy ending when my Dad and I took a trip back to Missouri to hunt for American Indian artifacts another 4 years later. (This had been his hobby for over 60 years, and became mine as well.) Anyway, my fossil and I were reunited as it had remained untouched and exactly where we left it when we moved. I've included a picture of this fossil find below. Anyway, I've not found the time to really jump into this and other areas of interest (astronomy being one as well), but hope to do so as I near retirement. I'm also looking to introduce my grandsons to this hobby as well. They are especially excited after finding a fossil in my background in the stone (most likely from a local quarry) that was used to line the drainage ditches. So if anyone has some good places for us to explore, please send recommendations my way, especially in the West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania areas. Regards, Paul

Hi all! New here and getting back up to speed with the world of palaeontology! Have been Dino-mad since I can remember but haven’t really kept up with the science for a while due to University and engineering career! Last time I was ‘up-to-date’ Torosaurus and Triceratops were the same animal! It’s also only been recently since I realised real dinosaur fossils aren’t just in museums but can actually be bought and owned by anyone… seems obvious in hindsight! I’ve started my collection with two fossils that have been kindly verified here at TFF and will be keeping a keen eye out for more! Based in the UK and finding reliable sources of material seems tricky, but I’m getting there!

Hello everyone! My name is Paul and I have recently started collecting (or at least trying) and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on opening Mazon creek concretions. I made my first two trips last weekend and I think I have some concretions and have been using the freeze thaw method of opening. There are a few I gathered that seem to have what I've been calling an "egg" inside and I am wondering if this is just a rock with an outer layer, or worth freeze thawing until it finally pops. I attached photos of a few of these, one which I stripped of the entire outer layer, and also a picture of my prized blob! Which is the only fossil I have found so far lol. Any help is much appreciated!
