  1. Hi everybody from the middle-of-nowhere in the Nebraska Panhandle! I am a brand new fossil hunter....so brand new, in fact, that I just found my very first fossil (shark tooth) on a trip to South Carolina last week. I went on a guided excursion and found all sorts of other stuff than toofs as well. I am also hopefully making a trip to split some rocks in the Green RIver Formation area in Wyoming later this year. I also am wanting to learn some basic fossil prep, so I've been reading those threads a lot lately. Haven't worked up the courage to try some of my own yet, but still too cold here to work out in my garage anyway I am partial to ceratopsian dinos....see my photo in the plastic dinos thread! They're my favorite. Thanks for letting me join!
  2. Hi y'all, Was gifted this piece randomly, which was bought at an antique style store. The store made no claims to it being authentic, but I'm wondering if there's a possibility it is? I admit I know literally nothing about fossils or fossil identification, I just used Google lens to see if it would pull up an exact copy as a quick first test. It didn't pull up this exact piece, but did pull up a previous discussion on this forum where somebody else was trying to determine if their fossil fish was real and it was, although it was painted. Is that the case here as well, or is this just a fun replica? Thank you all so much in advance for sharing your knowledge with a total newbie!

    Hey all!

Hey all! I posted images of my artifact?? Can anyone help me head into the correct direction?
  4. Sami_7

    Hey everyone :)

Hi everyone! I'm Sami, I'm 23 and from MA (not a lot of fossils around here). I joined this forum because I'm very interested in learning about fossils and plan to make a trip down to Corys Lane in RI in the near future to see if I have any luck! I have found a few fossils randomly when I wasn't really looking and I hope to post them soon to see what everyone thinks. Anyways, I'm a bit of a talker haha very excited to meet you all and see what you find.
  5. Hello! Fossil hunting has been one of my hobbies for over a decade (since I was little). I live in southeast Texas and sometimes find the time to head up north to hunt, though unfortunately those times are few and far between. I love learning about fossils and I’m so excited to be a part of the Fossil Forum! I look forward to interacting with y’all.

    Is this a dinosaur egg

I found this in the Lehigh river in Lehighton, PA while kayaking this summer. Im not sure what it is or if its possible to be a dinosaur egg. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  7. Hi all- Would anyone be able to advise on where I might get unprepared Priscacara (tails at least) fossils for practice. Thanks so much for your help. K

    Hello from Tokyo!

Hello everyone! I'm a 28 year old woman from Poland, living in Japan. Long term fascination with anything prehistoric, however a complete noob when it comes to fossils. Hence why I'm here I just got my first fossil (spinosaurus tooth) and already asked about its quality here. So happy I found this amazing forum. Glad to learn from your collective wealth of knowledge. You guys rock! (pun intended)
  9. Cate

    Hello everyone

Hi to all, My name is Cate and I hail from South Yorkshire, England. I am very much a new comer to fossil hunting, starting about 12 months ago, so have only managed a few trips up to yet! My hunting ground is on the East coast, Whitby area. I love all the fossils I have found up to yet, particularly my ammonites, but also have some I am not sure what the are (may just be interesting rocks). Happy to share some of my finds and will post separately those I don’t have a clue about. I have enjoyed looking at the photos / posts on the site thus far, so a huge thank you to everyone else for sharing.
  10. Thanks for accepting me into your group. I’m mostly interested in hunting in the Peace River and sure would appreciate any suggestions y’all have. I’ve been wanting to do this for years and never have been able to talk anyone else into taking the plunge. Well, I finally have a couple of friends who said okay let’s do this so I’m going to what I can to learn what where and when until the “season” comes back. Looking forward to one day getting my Meg tooth to brag on.

    Turtle shells?

Good evening! I have so enjoyed reading all your posts on the fossil ID over the past month. It is fascinating to witness the knowledge and enthusiasm of your members! Tonight I’m sharing possible turtle shells my mother picked up in The Wind River basin near Riverton Wyoming. I think this area is Cenozoic. It has a lot sandstone but she recalls these were just laying on the ground among other normal rocks. We have many pieces but I am just sharing a few representative items here. I’d love to know anything more about them. Are they possibly turtle? Any guesses as to what kinds? What are the odd shapes on item 1? Is item 4 a bone? Thank you so much for your time and expertise! I look forward to learning more.
  12. petoskeypicker

    New member here!

Hello all! My true name is Kelton, but you may refer to me as "petoskeypicker" for my hobby of rockhounding along beaches and creeks. I am from Genesee county, Michigan. I love being in nature and I enjoy learning about biology and geology. I would hunt for coral, crinoid and trilobite fossils whenever I spend time outdoors. I enjoy learning about the history of Michigan's geology. I also like to go to rock and mineral shows to buy specimens that I can't find in my area. I am interested in a wide diversity of fossils, I like to collect plant and animal fossils together to feel that sense of ecology and to learn more about the time period they are from. It is amazing to hold a fossil. I have been collecting fossils for over ten years, yet I still feel like I am learning new things as I go along. I would like to get help for identifying specimens on the fossil forum and by making new connections with you who share my interest!

    Having some trouble identifying these

Hello, all, Thank you for clicking into this thread and looking at the below images. I found them over the last few years, but I just realized recently that the two on the left were more similar than the one on the right. (Are they shark teeth? They’re in such bad shape, I can’t match their shape.) The fourth item beneath these three I found about two weeks ago. I would love to know what they were if anyone could identify any of them. If you need more angles or different pictures, I am happy to oblige. I very much appreciate any feedback. Thank you!
  14. I started off rinsing with water until I realized it was causing all the fine detail to disintegrate away (I saw little suction cups on the tentacles!). I think it'a pyrite disease? Is it? I dunked it in a bowl of vinegar and it it still there now, hoping to stop the water damage and it seems to have halted the rapid deterioration, but now I'm concerned about the acid causing damage. What should I do next? I read online that a phosphate treatment may replace the escaping sulfur and stop the oxidation and that a recommended field treatment would be common fertilizer. How the heck would I apply fertilizer to a fossil? I do have some chemicals in the house for art in furniture restoration, but definitely not pure phosphate. Again, this is foreign territory. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you all! Location: Annandale, Virginia within the Virginia Gold-Pyrite Belt. My neighborhood is in the Cambrian period, but there was a geographic displacement from the Blue Ridge Mountains into Northern VA, not sure how/if that figures into the scenario.
  15. Hi, I'm the parent of a fossil-mad son who is always looking to learn more about paleontology. Our (his) interests tend toward fossil prep, collecting and field work. I'm currently hoping to find sources for un-prepped fossils to keep him busy! Looking forward to learning more!
  16. Resparked interest in fossils, rocks and minerals after moving to the Central Valley ca. Also inherited a large collection of rocks fossils and minerals. Need lots of help identifying.

    Hello from Kansas

Hello I am a mom of 3 boys who love to pick up rocks. My middle son who is 11 is in the geology project in our local 4-H. I am a complete newbie and can't really tell between a rock and a mineral. I am completely clueless. We live in Butler County Kansas and it is hard to find people that can help us ID things. I was pointed towards this forum so here we are. I enjoy getting all the tips and tricks.
  18. Hello. I am new around here so I hope this is the place to put this. I am looking for ways to ID everything that we have gathered on a state field trip for my son's 4-H project. I have the booklet that one of the state project leaders put together that lists what is supposed to be found where but that is all. It does have some pictures in the back but they are mostly line drawing type pictures in black and white so they are are tell what stuff is. Kansas does have a website that they have some pictures on but some times it isn't the greatest to use. I also have so many questions that I am not sure where to start. I will just number the biggest ones. 1. In the booklet we have it lists the things we should be able to find. If it isn't listed there does it mean we can't find it there?? 2. Kind of ties in with number 1 because we found stuff that looks like it could be one of two different things. How do you tell the difference between the two? Do we just assume it is the one that is listed in the book if the other possibility isn't listed? For example: One fossil we found looks to me like it could be either Phylum: Mollusca; Class: Gastropoda; Genus: Pharkidonotus or Phylum: Mollusca; Class: Gastropoda; Genus: Knightites. However only the Pharkidonotus was listed as being a possible find in that area. 3. If what they list as a possibility to find all that will be there is there a place you can go and just type in the name of the fossil and or rock and it will bring up pictures? Can I do that here or do I just have to scroll though all of the posts? I think that will get us started at least. I still need to wash all of our stuff and I can post pictures if needed. I am afraid though that I won't be able to get great pictures because some of this stuff is super tiny and my camera doesn't do well with small stuff. Thank you all so very much for any and all help as we sure need it.
  19. Hello, I live in Arizona now but just moved from Oregon 6 months ago. I love rockhounding and have heard this was the place for fossil info. I'm just getting started with fossil education so consider me an apprentice with lots of questions and lots to learn!

    Hi from New York

Hi all I am an amateur when it comes to finding fossils. I’ve been interested in them for years but could use all the advice I can get as to how to spot and identify them. Can’t wait to learn and see all the cool finds.
  21. Hey all! From South Eastern B.C. and have had some sort of rock and fossil collection since I was very young. Love the outdoors and am always walking around with my eyes glued to the ground, not cause I am shy, far from it! Lol Just don’t want to miss that find of a lifetime! Feel free to fire me a message and say hi. Once I figure out how to put together and album or gallery, I will post a few pics. Have one recent find I would love any info I could get. If you have any questions, again, feel free to drop me a line!
