Hello everyone, glad to be here! Here’s a little wave from my state fossil, the Eurypterid (found this guy in NY, too!) I’m Olivia- I’m a new Earth Science teacher in NYC as well as an AMNH and WKU graduate, and I’ve always loved Earth Science and a good fossil hunt. My only (semi) local fossil spot is Big Brook, so I’ll post my finds when I get to go again sometime (when a friend with a car is willing to take me haha) My current fossil goal is to make it out to Peace River some time to collect some megafauna bone, and hopefully megalodon and mastodon teeth. Anyone else from NYC?

Which school to go to if I want to enter paleontology?

Hey all. I'm in my last year of high school in brooklyn and I am extremely passionate about paleontology, but I don't know which school in NYC would be able to cater to my aspirations. There are a couple of cunys with geology but I cannot find any with programs in paleontology. -
Hello Everyone --. After having this website show up in so many random searches (re: fossils) I decided to join. I live in Westchester County NY and used to spend most of my time in the city for work & play before you-know-what of 2020 hit. I only recently got into fossils after seeing that things like dinosaur foot print tracks exist. I've been collecting gems and minerals for the last five or so years and excited to see where this takes me. Since I'm not handy at all, I have a feeling I may be reaching out to the experts to help prep any specimen I may come across :). Cheers!

I was raised in upstate NY and surrounded by fossils as a child and that passion stayed with me to adulthood. Professionally, I work in Emergency Management in NYC. I have a BA and MPA from American Public University and have a post-grad certificate from Harvard Business School. I have lived across the USA and have a small but nice fossil collection. I go to local rock and fossil shows, go out to roadside digs every once in a while, and just have a great love for science. In addition to my 30 years of autodidact studies of paleontology and geology, are the sciences of abiogenesis, cosmology, and evolutionary biology. I am a member of the World Science Festival and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Nice to be a part of the forum.

Hello from NYC. Recently got into fossils; unfortunately for me, there's no sites close by and I don't have a car. To satisfy my curiosity I ordered shales from U-Dig. I thought all I would need is a hammer but boy do I feel confused after going through the forum. Not sure if I want to invest in an air scribe until I'm sure this is for me. Going to join the NYPS and perhaps buy some xacto knives before the shales arrive. Looking forward to going through this site!

Hi, I moved to NYC recently from Texas (where the fossils are plentiful and everywhere) and am very interested in finding out about fossil sites around New York City or in the (relatively) nearby upstate area. Does anyone have any locations or suggestions? I'd rather not trek as far as ithaca and buffalo, i will get to those at some point, as I have read about the sites there, but if anyone knows anywhere closer, i would greatly appreciate info! And if anyone from the area would like to plan a trip and wants some company, please let me know. Thanks in advance! H

Ventured up to Manhattan last weekend to tour the American Museum of Natural History, which is currently one of the largest dinosaur exhibits on the planet. I hope you enjoy the photos as they were take on an iPhone 6 and the lighting might be off in a few spots. For starters here's picture of myself next to a massive Tyrannosaurus Rex cast. I believe the head in the glass box on the left is a real head.
