I've got this very worn vertebral centrum from the marine Conway Formation near Oaro (Late Cretaceous; about 79-73 Ma) on the south island of New Zealand. The only two logical candidates are plesiosaur or mosasaur from this formation, both of which are known here. There are characteristics of both groups seen on this bone which is tripping me up a bit. One end face seems a bit concave and the other more convex which is a mosasaur feature, but then there also looks to be two distinct holes on the ventral side (see photo three) which could be the paired foramina that are characteristic of plesiosaur vertebrae. So i am left scratching my head! What do others think? Front face Dorsal view Ventral view (note what look like paired foramina) Lateral view
Greetings all, My 30th birthday is looming ever closer and I have discovered that my partner is taking me on a mystery weekend away. I have been chipping away at her trying to get some clues as to where we are going and I am now reasonably confident that we are going fossil hunting in Oaro. Since neither of us have been fosiling at Oaro before I would be very grateful if anyone could give me some pointers on where to look and what to look out for. I cant wait!! Regards
Hi, I have two days in Christchurch in April and I was looking to go fossil hunting somewhere close by I'm unfortunately over for work, so I only have the 7am to 5pm-ish available on two days - what would be the best place to visit? I've read a bit about Oaro and that seems like a must! Other than that I was wondering if people have been to Mt Cass, Motunau or other sites within a few hours of Christchurch and have a preference? I'll have a car so transport isn't a problem and I'm a farm girl so rough country/long walk won't bother me either (in fact would probably be preferred). Ideally I would love to find something, anything, Mosasaur for a nephew that is obsessed with them, but personally I'd love a bony tooth bird specimen or even just some nice petrified wood. That's the wish list, but happy to poke around all day and find nothing of significance as well - at least it would give me a good excuse to come back! Thanks for your help! PS - Happy to have company if any local hunters are free on a Friday
