    This Gymnophyllum wardi corallite exhibits characteristics associated with the ephebic (maturing, or nearly mature) stage of growth. For instance, note the beginnings of a central dome on top.

    This mature Gymnophyllum wardi corallite looks like a pie crust due to the prominent central dome, fused septal ends, and the three apparent wounds on top. Fusing of the septa served to increase the surface area of the base. This may have kept corallites from sinking in soft mud.

    Some mature specimens of Gymnophyllum wardi had low, flat tops. Again, note the fusing of some (but not all) of the septa near the periphery. Also see the prominent growth lines on the bottom surface.

    The growth lines on the bottom surface of this mature specimen give the appearance of several corallites stacked one upon the other. This pattern is often seen in Gymnophyllum wardi and may indicate sequences of regenerative events.

    Gymnophyllum wardi corallites often display swelling at the ends of the septa, a characteristic that may have helped prevent sinking in soft mud.

    Some corallites of Gymnophyllum wardi exhibit partial walls at the periphery of the calyx. Again, this may have been an adaptation to limit sinking in mud.

    This specimen of Gymnophyllum wardi shows evidence of regeneration (the appearance of one corallite growing atop another). The angle of regeneration suggests the young corallite may have become tilted before sprouting a new top in a more upright orientation. Although Gymnophyllum wardi has been extinct for millions of years, we can imagine their appearance in life based on pictures we can see by googling the term “button coral”. If you would like to learn more about Gymnophyllum wardi, I recommend two excellent sources that can be downloaded as pdf files from Google Scholar, as follows: Jeffords, R. M. (1955).     ID help: Deltodus tooth?

    I know very little about shark teeth. I found this one a while back in Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) shale in northeastern Oklahoma. I am speculating this may be deltodus only because I see a nearly identical tooth labeled as deltodus on another website. The fossil is very thin (too thin to photograph the edges). Besides confirming the taxonomy, can anyone tell me which surface of the tooth is shown in Side A? Finally, would you say Side B is mainly matrix (other than the edges)? I think matrix is showing through the cracks on Side A, and that may be the only thing holding the fossil together. My wife recently got me a camera, so I am working on a gallery album in the forum. I would like to make sure I have the IDs correct before I post photos in the album, so you may be seeing several ID requests from me over the next weeks. Best wishes

    From the album: Pennsylvanian Fossils of Northeast Oklahoma

    This is one of the crushing teeth of Deltodus, from Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) shale in northeastern Oklahoma. This tooth is only about 4 mm thick. Deltodus comprised a genus of cartilaginous fishes in the class Chondrichthyes, subclass Holocephali. Modern day holocephalans include chimaeras.
  14. In a few days, I am heading to Tahliquah,OK and am thinking of checking out any fossil sites. Anyone have a suggestion? My cousin said there’s a mountain range in that area that he has found shells, but he also has a pretty serious drug problem and could be confused. Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

    Invertebrate ID help requested

    All, This is my first post, although I have been reading with interest for some time. As I approach retirement, I find myself returning to the hobbies of my youth, including fossil hunting. I found these fossils in a single rock in Northeastern Oklahoma (a few miles South of Tulsa). It came from demolished concrete structure, so I do not know where the rock originated. The rock is very hard and very fine grained. It reminds me of chert or a very hard limestone. The first photo shows one end of the rock, where the closeup photos were taken. The fossil in the upper left is about one inch (2.5 cm) in length and about one-half inch (1.3 cm) in height. The second photo shows a close-up of this fossil. I am nearing the file size limit, so I will attempt to reply to this topic with additional photos. I would be grateful if forum members can help me with identification. Best wishes.

    Caseodus shark jaw

    Went on a fossil hunt with Forum member Conostichus yesterday near Oologah, OK at a site suspected to be in the the Excello shale, Pennsylvanian age. I found a jaw that looks like some one the [suspected] edestus jaws I’ve found out there, but this one looked different. This looks like it has teeth along it (first pic) and the teeth (Although heavily worn) look like caseodus. What do you think?

  19. My wife and I went on a 7500+ mile ramble to break out of our COVID doldrums. Due to the virus we had to change up many of our original plans... which conversely added a number of additional fossil hunting locals as they allowed us to mostly avoid our fellow humans and maintain social distancing by many many miles. As part of our trip preparations my wife sewed us a number of masks, including a whole series of fossil hunting masks for me. Originally we were supposed to stay in Chicago, but we elected to avoid staying in the city, so we only got to do a drive by We started the trip with a bonus dig, meeting up with fellow forum member @minnbuckeye for a guided Ordovician hunt in Fennimore, Wisconsin (THANKS MIKE!) Unfortunately I neglected to take pics of the site so I will only be able to share a farm pic we passed on the way. Mike was a gracious host who kicked off the visit with a gift of several fossil samples from his home turf As with all of the fossils from this trip, all finds are as they arrived back home, no prep. Katz (1978) https://www.jstor.org/stable/1303971?seq=1 lumped exisiting variants into one species P. rusticus based on hydrospire similarity Given that this distinctive morphologic end member is stratigraphically restricted and present a population, perhaps this conclusion should be revisited.

    Is this anything?

    I’ve just recently sifted through some permian micro matrix from Oklahoma and I came across this and wasn’t sure if it was anything at all, it was very uniform and sleek so I didn’t immediately assume it was a pebble, it also had that strange split on one end. I’m not even sure if it’s a fossil.

    Den of Vipers

    I was looking for fossils at Greenleaf Lake today in Oklahoma. I came across a cottonmouth on a narrow, wooded trail (cottonmouth is a poisonous snake) The cottonmouth made sure I saw it--when I was about 8 feet away, it started whipping its tail. I had to get past the snake on the trail to go back to my pickup. I kept thinking the snake would leave while I was taking pictures, but instead, it went into a threat display with its open mouth and increased the thrashing of its tail. The tail thrashing brought a copperhead out of the nearby leaves, and the copperhead then started displaying with its own open mouth (copperheads are also poisonous). I searched around me for a long stick to nudge them off the trail, but I was in the one part of the woods with no suitable sticks. The copperhead eventually slithered on top of the cottonmouth. This startled the cottonmouth and they both darted under a large rock on the downhill side of the trail. That is when I was able to pass by. There was a second copperhead in the leaves, but I never saw it until I looked at the pictures when I got home. Photos are attached (The zoom makes it look like I was close, but I was 6-7 feet away--except for the second copperhead that I didn't see at the time.) I think I'll stay away from the lake until winter. Best wishes.

    Possibly bioturbated sandstone?

    I've been adventuring my family property in north-western Pottawatomie county, Oklahoma, for 15 years or so and I've always thought all this sandstone was kinda boring - there didn't seem to be any obvious strata, or differences in composition and no fossils. On Christmas day, however, I went out on the family property to do a bit of photogrammetry of the sandstone outcrops on the property and I stumbled upon a very interesting pattern in the sandstone: I have been told that it looks like bioturbated sandstone, and it certainly looks like some kind of biological pattern. This sandstone belongs to the garber formation in central Oklahoma, and is Permian in age. This is the only place I've seen such a pattern anywhere around here. Is anyone familiar with the garber sandstone or perhaps with similar formations/trace fossils?

    Mineral identification

    Hello! I recently went fossil hunting At White Mound in Sulphur, OK ( Devonian Era in the Haragan Formation) and I came across these black/ brownish minerals some in the shape of squares and other are more rounded but still have flat surfaces. The minerals range from 3-8 MM. The hill that the minerals came from looked to be limestone. On the Mohs hardness scale it is between a 5-7. Does anyone have an idea what mineral this could be?
