I've searched the web and these forums before joining so I could post. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Appears as though it was once firewood. Shiny spot on "top" of specimen is water.

My family and I will be going on a trip to Montana and Wyoming this summer. I plan to do a lot of collecting for both myself and paleontology lab I now work for. We're planning out the trip now, and wonder if anyone can recommend a good spot for finding opalized wood. A collector recently donated an absolutely gorgeous limb cast for our collections, and my son is in love with it (so am I!). We know that The Gallatin Petrified Forest allows a small amount of collecting with a permit, but is there anywhere else we can find some?

I found this five foot under water in Mt Fork River in Oklahoma... approx mile from where the dinosaur skeleton on display in red river museum was found. It's extremely heavy much heavier than petrified wood and when I carried it to museum she said it glowed pink, blue, and green florescence and that it needed to be checked out. She also said it has silver pyrite bursts in some of the round indentations and she hadn't seen anything like it. It's not magnetic at all and has some type of vein thru the center of it's entire length. It has a very unique pattern and I can't find anything exactly li
