Found this while hiking and climbing in south west South Dakota not far from Badlands National Park. A quick google search suggested an early camel, but I'd like to know for sure if possible.

I got this a while back, it's an oreodont haw section. I am seeking more information on it. My guess was Merycoidodon just based on pictures. Here's a bunch of pictures, I'm hoping to get as specific on taxon as possible, it says on the label it's from Chadron deposits, white river formation, 20 miles northeast of lush, Wyoming.

Just a question here. For anyone who knows me, I one picky son of a gun. I ran into this the other day whilst going through some boxes of stuff. I found this many years ago while hunting in the White River formation in Wyoming with Kent Sundell. I dont want it, but my question is, is this sellable? Im not asking for a price of what it may be worth, but does anyone think that anyone may want a partial skull thats in bad condition? No lower jaws whatsoever! Just wondering? RB

Hello all, I already posted this topic in Paleo Re-creations, but nobody answered there. I want to make a composite skeleton from an extinct animal, but I don't know witch species I take best. I already tought about Oreodont, cave bear, bison... Do you guys know an animal whose it is possible to collect all the bones (skull is not necassary, but I would love a real skull) Keichousaur is not a good example, because I want have the fun for searching, buying and making a composite. It think mammals are the only option, because reptiles are expensive and difficult to collect all the bones, maybe alligator is possible? What do you guys think about it? Greetings

Can't figure if this is a rhino, oreodont or something else from White River
-Andy- posted a topic in Fossil ID
Hi all, I have a Ogliocene-aged partial fossil jaw from the White Rivers Badlands. The seller identified this as a Hyracodon nebraskensis. It measures 2.8 inches across. However, two other friends with White Rivers fossils protested this ID. One said it's Subhyracodon instead. The other believes it could be Oreodont. Can anyone tell if this is a rhino? Thank you.- 4 replies

My first shot at prepping ANYTHING! I will describe by process with the hope of some constructive criticism. PIX 1: I used only dental picks for this Oreodont partial jaw as the matrix is soft. I also found that a Qtip with water, softened some of the tougher spots. PIX 2: I used a soft bristle brush to apply a dilute acetic acid which served well to remove the last of the residual matrix. PIX 3: I neutralized the acid with a soak in Sodium Bicarbonate PIX 4: Into the oven at 200 F for one hour to drive off all moisture. PIX 5: Into a 5% solution of Paraloid. I used Pyrex brand with a snap lid and seal that does not react with the Acetone nor does the lid seem to get gummed up with the Paraloid. The piece was still warm when I put it in the Paraloid solution and it bubbled vigorously for several minutes as the solution soaked in. All told the bubbles lasted for 1 hour. PIX 6: Cool shot of air escaping the piece. PIX 7: To slow down the evaporation of the Acetone, I sealed the piece in a ziplock and placed in at 25 F (note the snow!!! this is Minnesota) I could see the Acetone condensate on the bag. After 1 hour I opened the bag and let it dry completely. PIX 8: Finished and on the way to my 8 year old grandson in Florida!

Anybody interested in trying an Oreodont smoothie? I picked up this little guy to prep for a customer yesterday. Both lower jaws are there, one upper jaw for sure, and a bunch of bits that I have yet to figure out!! This one is going to take some time.

Looking for some suggestions on what and where to buy or build some tools to get me started preparing my new Leptauchenia nitida. I bought one in the matrix this weekend and cant wait to get started. I found this site looking for information to begin preparing my first fossil, a Leptauchenia nitida, in matrix, I bought this weekend at The 72 annual Gem and mineral show here in southeast Michigan. I am a complete beginner as this was always a dream of mine since I was very young. Wanted to do this for a living when I was younger, then, life took over and here we are attempting something at 50! I never thought I would be able to do. I cant wait to get started. Any help or advice would be welcome and appreciated. I will try to post pics as I go. My first project is to build and /or buy some basic tools to get started. Here goes nothing.....

Hello fossil friends, Picked this beauty up recently, but I was told no more than "Oredont from Wyoming". From this, I deduce Merycoidodon culbertsoni, from the Brule Formation. Is this correct? All responses are appreciated Thank you!

Found this online. The seller claims it's an oreodont brain cast (with one end broken off). Was collected from White River Formation, South Dakota. It does to similar to an endocast.
