Based on comments in the Fossil Forum, I am not the only one who has had prized specimens reduced to small piles of rubble (e.g., a prized ammonite and a prized evaporite mineral). There appears to be at least two types of problems with preservation: 1) reactive iron sulfide oxidation after exposure to atmospheric humidity (marcasite, greigite, mackinawite etc.; pyrite appears to be relatively more resistant), and drying out of specimens (I have some isotelus trilobites that have become more brittle with age). I was wondering what other members have done to forestall this problem. I have read that a coating of polyvinyl acetate dissolved in acetone has been successfully used by some. Have others exercised this option? What other options are available? It would be helpful if sources of preservation material supplies were given with other preservation options. Thank you in advance.

Hi all. I was recently in Crawfordsville, hunting along Sugar Creek. While it's getting cold out, I've found that this is a great time to do it since the algae is gone and you can see what's under water! I only spent about forty minutes out there, but still came back with a lot of mortality plates, small crinoid pieces, jaspers, blood stones, and some other interesting things I can't identify yet. I found this piece here sticking out of a mud wall in Sugar Creek Nature Park (I made sure to see if collecting is allowed there--it is). Only about an inch was sticking out, so I was shocked to see how big it ended being. I'm still a newbie at this stuff, but know enough to not soak it in Iron Out. Is there anything I can do to get the rust out without damaging it?

Hello to Everyone... I'm hoping that someone might be able to advise me about preventing oxidation on a pyritized ammonite. I have no doubt that this question has cropped up before and wondered of anyone had some good advice. I'm reluctant to immerse it in acetone (Seems a tad aggressive?) I know that polishing it will only be a temporary fix. So... Two questions - what can I use to polish it back to a shiny finish and... Two... I do have some clear, low viscosity, pure silicon oil - I use it to fill vintage compasses that I restore. Does anyone know if this would react with the FeS2 in an adverse way? Sadly my knowledge of chemistry is very lacking. :-( I'd love to hear your thoughts...
