    Part Of A Plesiosaur Propodial

From the album: North Sulphur River Texas

Distal part of a plesiosaur propodial. North Sulphur River Texas find..
  3. I had a good day fossil hunting North Sulphur River creeks. I found Xiphactinus jaw pieces, skull bones, Mosasaur verts and what I think is a worn Mosasaur or Plesiosaur bone. The large jawbone has 14 sockets for teeth and 6 partial teeth.
  4. A nice day fossil hunting at The North Sulphur River and surrounding creeks. I found a load of Mosasaur bones and one cool old bottle from the 1930s. One Mosasaur vert was a lucky find. I saw a lump in the red zone and wanted to try out my new rock hammer and it turned out to be a vert. The Mosasaur Angular with the shark feeding marks in the second pic was my favorite find of the day.
  5. Figured I'd start the year off with a trip to the Sulphur. Took me a while to get going and didn't find as much as usual. Most of the stuff was hidden pretty well. Maybe it was the 3 hours of sleep ; ) Ended with a decent haul including several mosasaur vertebrae, mosasaur tooth, x-fish centrum, and an assortment of bone fragments. Hope everyone gets out this weekend.
  6. The stars aligned and was able to spend some quality time in the Sulphur yesterday. Cold and winds 30-40 but it's always fun. I don't go very often but when I do I hike 6-8 hours straight. Started off very slow, only finding a few fragments in the first 3 hours. I decided to take a chance and hit an area that normally doesn't produce much. This time it paid off, I found almost everything there. I was surprised to see quite a few folks and footprints out there. Can't wait to go back.

    TX NSR Menebites Ammonite

Found and prepped a nice Menebites Ammonite from the North Sulphur River Ozan Layer. These are not common to find and are really just a loosely connected pile of fractured mud. Definitely a challenge! I saw the outline peeking out of the Ozan and dug a wide probing trench and was happy to see the size of what I expected to be a 4-5 inch Ammonite was really about 9 inches across. I pedestalled it as best I could and dumped a solution of Elmers Glue and water on it to hold it together long enough to get it to my prep table. I Wrapped it in heavy aluminum foil and crossed my fingers as I carefully pried it loose and roller it over. I was pleased to see that it was in relatively good shape but it was soooo fragile! I took it home and let it dry. Huge cracks formed and it pulled itself apart as the mud contracted. It took a while, but I glued all the pieces back together. The final piece turned out rather nice I think for a NSR ammonite. Jon As found in the Ozan Before drying
  8. Could these be oyster or crinoid cast / molds? The rock is around 15" in length. The two large impressions looked around 5" in diamaeter. Sorry no size indicator in photo. I decided to leave this big boy in the creek..long haul back to car Any help is appreciated! Chris Scientific Name: UNKNOWN Found: North Central Texas Creek Date Found: OCT 2015 Formation: Ozan / Kau Size: Various
  9. Perfect 85 degrees so I went on a little adventure. Tried a less traveled spot on the Sulphur River in far northeast Texas. Snakes, sheep, boar, mosasaur vertebra, fish jaw. I didn't even know it was a jaw piece till I cleaned it up. Fun day all around.
  10. 4 hours in the 93 degree heat, but I found everything AND the kitchen sink! Nah jk, nothing too amazing but it was a good day out there. Perfect time to hit the river. We've had 20-25 in. Of rain in may. 3rd wettest month of all time for Dallas. Now it's dry and hot!
  11. River was a bit high and I got beat up in the storms but I managed to find a few things.

    North Sulphur River Finds

Found this in the gravel beds of the North Sulphur River last weekend. Any help in Identifying would be appreciated. Seems like a concretion, but is like a cross section of a cylinder, rather than a sphere. It is 1.5 inches in diameter and about 1 inch wide, and has a thick layer of quartz around the cylinder in the center, and an outer layer of s lighter colored material. Notice three sections in the "core" cylinder in the second photo. Almost looks like a straight ceph has concretion around it...... 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Thanks in advance for your help.

  14. Sunday I picked up my old bud trentonmon and we headed east. We dropped into the North Sulphur River at several locations and found a few goodies in the Taylor group Ozan formation of North Texas. We saw the ruins of the old railroad trestle near Camp Shed or Enloe. I found a number of reptile and mammal verts and bone frags. One spot provided most of the fish and shark teeth pictured. I found a nice globbidens Mosasaur tooth, assorted enamel flakes along with a couple of mastodon fragments. One arrowhead, a blank and what must have been a scraper or blade. Worm tubes were everywhere. I picked up 80 of them. I have a small clamp lid jar I want to fill with them...and I am getting there with that project. My buddy trentonmon had a pretty good hunt too. I hope he will post his. He found a huge cervical mosasaur vert and more of the same goodies I found. All in all a pretty good outing. The weather was just great. Trentonmons bday was Saturday so I got to rib him all day about getting so old. We had fun, got in some serious exercise, and put yet another adventure in the bank and you know what if I had a dollar for all of the adventures he and I have had over the last 43 years I could really go to the bank. over and out wfrr aka Randy Rogers
  15. This coming week I have a few irons in the fire that I am excited about. Saturday I have a new eagle ford site that I recently stumbled on to. It looks a lot different than what I've been looking at in the upper areas. Very creme colored hard clay with red nodules. I'm only guessing I'm near the lower britton. Funny though, I don't think it should be where I'm finding it. Only had a short time to look but I found some decent sized shark teeth, a fish vert and a reptile bone frag. Man it was some kind of fun too! I have some time Saturday to look this place over a bit better. I expect a good hunt there. Monday I have an invite to tag along to the North Sulphur River. Another hot hard 10 hour day of slogging in the muddy channel. We tend to cover 5 or 6 miles, of course not counting all of the zig zagging back and forth. What can I say? This place never lets me down. Its a very long wide channel thats had a good rain this week. Lots of places to go and plenty of things to find. You simply need to be lucky or you just need to be willing to hunt harder and walk far farther than the last guy. Wish I were there right now. I hear people think there might be BIGFOOT in the North Sulphur River. I've not seen any evidence of that. I'm a lot more worried about finding myself following a single set of small shoe prints in the river. They belong to someone small, perhaps a woman. They walk alone and they cover some ground. When you find yourself following them, they go everywhere you think you want to look. I've invariably followed these little prints zig zagging along many stretches of the river. They do one hell of a job picking things up. Iv'e only managed to find a few things following those little foot prints and that's been tough! They don't miss much. So my hat's off to you. If I do see BIGFOOT prints in the river I won't worry too much about him, but if I see your little footprints in the channel I'm getting the hell out of there. Tuesday I am meeting some folks that happen to be the owners of a section of creek in the Eagle Ford that is fenced, posted and not open to the public. I've been invited to the property by them for another reason. I'm sure going to try and get access to hunt if it's appropriate to bring it up. I've found quite a few things through the years right up to their property line. Who knows what might be there? I will try to post some pics next week.
