Solnhofen Dragonfly - What is real?
DarasFossils posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello, My Dad and I purchased a really beautiful Solnhofen dragonfly resembling something very similar to this (not my picture), which has these really prominent eyes and legs on it. Is this naturally preserved or likely painted on, and if so, does this affect the quality and value? Seller is reputable and I know paint is common with the Solnhofen just so you can see them for display which I don't mind but just curious what is likely real and what is not... Ours is a big boy at over 7". -
Real keichousaurus? Quality of preparation? Complete?
mr.rod posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello all, I'm interested in these keichousaurus brothers. The seller has reserved the matrix for me, and I would love to understand some things before I buy. Better first ask to avoid bad surprises later ;-) Hope some of the experts here can support me. My questions are Is it an original/authentic fossil and not a replica? Guess it is original ;-) The quality of preparation seems to be below average? What is this untypical light-grey cloud around the right brother? Cheap prep? It looks a bit flat to me, not really 3d-look bones, is this from erosion?- 22 replies

I was dipping my fossils in acetone and B76 in order to stabilize them for long term storage but my clear gloves started to disintegrate into the acetone and the fossils soaked it up. I didn't notice any color change until they dried and where coated in white. It only affected some of the last ones I dipped but they are also the ones I want to id. it's possible the dye came from something else as when I started using different plastic gloves it really coated them white. Can the color be removed? The structure can still be seen in the fish verts but suppose to be gray color. Im testing on

Yet another Keichousaurus
Vertebrate posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello Fossil Forum, what do you think about this Keichousaurus? Seller says it's all original, no restoration. While it looks not quite as stunning as the critter in the thread below it's still much nicer than usual IMO and I like the dark/bright contrast of the slab. Any issues or red flags? Thanks! As I keep digging through the literal tons of old geology and earth science supplies in the store room, I came across a large box full of about 30 of these old Ward's Science Education fossil sorting kits. They are all injection molded plastic, and were pretty boring. The boss told me to "throw.that.junk.out. NOW." which of course means I loaded the entire box into my backpack. Legitimate salvage is legitimate salvage. Anyway, in preparation for turning many of our replica casts and such into display pieces for teaching (and to make the earth sciences lab look cool...I decided to p

What’s your idea on buying a fossil that’s been stained? Yes no maybe? i been looking at tracks that say they have been lightly stained and to tell the truth I have a hard time making out a track without it being stained.

My collection is starting to become large enough that I'm getting worried about forgetting where something was collected. I bought some titanium white acrylic paint and paintbrushes to label my fossils, so now all I need is a labeling scheme. I was curious what you found worked best for your collection?

Acetone test for paint on fossil
TeacherCollector posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello all, I started collecting fossils as a hobby a few years ago, trusting sources without question. I recently bought my first expensive fossil (Keichousaurus) online. I know they are often faked (or at least heavily restored) so I want to confirm that mine is legitimate. I did a scrape test which revealed more bone so that was good. However, I did an acetone test on a couple of the bones and the bones faded a little bit and the q tip I used picked up some dark grey/black. I also tried it on the matrix in three places which pulled up even more black on the q tip (more than the fossil h -
Checking/removing painted elements
LiamL posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I just used Acetone to remove a penmark from my Mosasaur jaw. Before After It seems to have worked very well and makes it looks better. Would the same process work for checking for any paint that might have been but on a Keichousaurus without damaging anything? -
Hello. I'm considering this Keichousaurus hui. I think the bones look original, the toes all have the right shape. My main area of concern is the skull because it looks a little fishy. Any help is appreciated!

Hi all, I'd like to blend some glue lines on a piece I had prepped recently. I've read that painting over them with a mixture of elmers white glue, powdered matrix and water can give a fairly good, reversible finish and is cheap! I was just wondering what sort of ratios to go for if anyone has any idea? Cheers, Matt

Last Saturday I decided to try something new. I had made a couple of plaster casts in the past, but NEVER painted any before. I don't like painting the walls in my house so never though I would enjoy painting a replica but by golly it was a BLAST! To start with the casting I made 5 teeth, and 3 broke, but 2 came out somewhat decent. I decided to paint my 3 broken ones first just to try it. The fourth tooth in the pictures is a REAL fossil rom Hell Creek, not a cast! I did not have it with me while I was painting so I was just trying to go off of memory.
