  1. Hello, I'm looking at this ~5cm Ohio Silica Shale Paraspirifer bownockeri. I was wondering if such bright gold coloration indicates "enhancement" of the pyrite by harsh prep, acid treatment or brass wire brush? Or is this just the natural color of some specimens? Many pyritized Paraspirifers I see are more grey or silvery (though I have indeed seen such gold ones). Other pyritized fossils as well seem to typically be more the silver/grey color, and as far as I can tell Pyrite itself is generally paler than a vibrant gold. Thanks.

    Sylvania brachs

I was in Sylvania OH this weekend and among many other pieces, I found these. I finished prepping them as soon as I could. The first is a pyrite paraspirifer bownockeri.....it is perfect, not a blemish or chip. This one is a paraspirifer (I think) but different. About 2 inches across. Has a few flaws. Then there is another pyrite bownockeri, same size as the first one, nearly perfect but for a chipped "wing" and a hole. But the hole exposes that it is also a geode....containing calcite I believe. I've never seen or heard of a geodized pyrite fossil. Does anyone have one?
  3. Hello everyone, I have been wondering about this for a bit but only now that I atually have one of these in my collections have I decided to ask this, All of the P. bownockeri I have seen have been pyritized and I wanted to ask why this is, I do not know of any other brachiopods like this because while there are some I have seen preserved in pyrite they are from areas where the rest of the fossils are also pyritized, from what I have seen its mostly just this species that is commonly found fully pyritized from this formation. The only thing I can think of is maybe they are found in a specific layer which is why they are the ones that are primarily pyritized. So my question is, what causes this? Also do these brachiopods come preserved in other mineral such as calcite? If anyone knows or has any useful sources I would love to hear it! Thank you very much, Misha
