    Help with Unknown Vertebra

I am seeking help with trying to ID a vertebra found in the Peace River, FL a few weeks ago. I have conducted a number of searches for something similar without success. This specimen has a 7/8" or 23mm long protuberance that I have not seen on any other vert that I have recovered from the river. I am thinking this may be from the tail (?) of either a cetacean or possibly a land mammal. I would be interested to see if @Harry Pristis @Shellseeker @Bone Daddy or @Meganeura have come across anything similar. Measurements: 3" x 1 1/4" x 1" or 75mm x 34mm x 25mm Any help with an ID would be greatly appreciated. I can also see that the extensive wear may make an ID impossible.

    Help with ID requested

I found this bone on the Peace River a couple of days ago. When fist looking at it I took it for just a chunk of bone. Further inspection leads me to believe it could be a patella or other sesamoid. I have a couple of mammoth patellas and the surfaces somewhat reminded me of them. I have not been able to find a match after repeated searches so I am asking for opinions on what it could be. Measurements: 2" x 1.5" x 1.25" or 52mm x 37mm x 30mm Same side different angle. Same side different angle.

    Claw? Talon? Tooth?

Out on the river yesterday and had a few interesting finds (nothing as big as @Meganeura!). This one I first thought was a tooth as when I spotted it in the sifter I thought it had a bit of enamel near the tip. Once I picked it up I thought it was too thin and curved to be a tooth. That left me with claw or talon as options I think are possible. Several searches on line failed to provide anything I thought was a good match. The only thing that seems a possibility was a photo created by @Harry Pristis of a Titanis walleri claw. Dare I think this is what it could be? It seems too wide and thin to be an eagle talon and I could not match it up with various mammal claws. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jack, @Shellseeker, have you come across anything similar? The specimen measures: 1 3/4" long x 5/8" wide x 3/8" thick or 43mm long x 17mm wide x 8mm thick

    On a Roll with Ears?

Found this bone over a week ago. When I pulled it up out of the river I wasn't sure it was even a bone. I did think it had enough interesting features to take it home and investigate further. After soaking and softening up sand and pebbles lodged in small openings I was able to clean it up a bit. At that point I started to see characteristics that made it look like another ear bone. A search of the web turned up what looks like a good comparison from the Charleston Museum website. They have a photo of an "undescribed mysticete cetacean" whale ear bone, an auditory bulla (object ID: PV2433). Here is their photo: The following photos are of the specimen I retrieved from the Peace River. It measures 58mm x 57mm x 20mm (thick) Seems like I have been asking @Boesse for his input on just about every post lately. I hope he can find the time to opine once again. Thanks in advance. Jim W.

    Foot bone?

Found the below bone on the Peace River last week. It was just laying on the bottom on top of a limestone shelf and covered with algae. Was interested enough in what it might be to bring it home and clean it up a bit. The only thing I could find that matched size and shape was a proboscidean foot bone. I am curious to see if anyone can make an ID. Specimen measures: 4" x 3.75" x 1.5" or 110mm x 95mm x 35mm Any input/suggestions on a possible idea would be appreciated. Thanks! Jim W.

    Another ear ID

Picked up another inner ear bone last week that looks to me like it could be another parietobalaena, (baleen whale). I have had the good fortune to have two Id'd by @Boesse. One in 2019 and one just last month. In comparing it to the 2019 find I think it is a match. I am hoping the good Doctor has the time to provide an ID on this one. If anyone else has an idea as to an ID their input would be appreciated. Thanks! First up the 2019 find: Now the latest, found last week. It measures - 40mm x 37mm x 29mm or 1 9/16" x 1 1/2" x 1 1/8"

    Hoping to confirm some finds

I'm seeking confirmation (or not?) on a couple of finds from the Peace River earlier this week. So far my research leads me to believe I have a medial phalanx from a giant armadillo and a lateral malleolar (carpal?) from a Long-legged Llama. First up is the medial phalanx. Measurement wise I think the Giant Armadillo, Holmesina floridanus, is a good match. The specimen measures: 1" x 3/4" x 5/8" or 25 mm x 20mm x 16mm Next up is the suspected lateral malleolar from a Long-legged Llama, Hemiauchenia macrocephala. The specimen measures: 1 3/8" x 1" x 5/8" or 35mm x 26mm x 20mm Would appreciate any input to confirm or direct me to another possibility on each. Thanks!

Need a Hand with an Ear

Had a good day on the Peace River, FL yesterday picking up three different periotics, ear bones. Two I easily identified as I have previous examples (dolphin & horse). The third has me somewhat baffled. I have looked at images of periotics from the pygmy sperm whale, right whale, dugong and seal along with numerous others and have not found what I think is a conclusive match. Should I be looking at land mammals or am I just missing the connection to one of the cetaceans? Input from the group would be greatly appreciated. I also hope @Shellseeker, Jack, has a chance to weigh in - I know he has a lot of interest and experience with the ear bones found on the Peace. Possibly the good Doctor @Boesse may also have the time to offer an opinion The specimen measures: 50mm x 45mm x 31mm or 2" x 1 5/8" x 1 1/4"

    Help with Tooth ID

Found this small tooth last week while hunting the Peace River. Almost missed it in the sieve and initially thought it was just a chip of something. On getting it home and giving a closer look I became convinced it is a tooth. Maybe an incisor. After a lot of searching on line the closest I could come up with is horse incisor. Only I think it is way too small for that. The chewing surface appears more jagged and uneven then I would expect from a herbivore. The groove along the length of the tooth and its curvature are similar to what I have found on horse incisors. Measurements - Inches = 3/4"L x 3/8"W x 1/4"H CM =. 20mm L x 10mm W x 6mm H @Shellseeker, Jack - I would appreciate your input knowing how much time and effort you put into finding the small 3-toed horse fossils. Thanks, Jim W.

    Alligator Attack

I don't know if others have posted about this already so I thought it would be a good warning and reminder to those who hunt the Peace River. This past Sunday a thirteen year old girl was swimming in the Peace River near the Gardner Boat Ramp when she was attacked by a large alligator. It happened around 2:30 in the afternoon. Luckily, the girl managed to get away from the gator but it did bite her on the arm. Florida Fish and Wildlife confirmed the attack. The alligators are more active this time of year. With that, the water level and flow rate I don't hunt the river this time of year. When I do hunt I am always on the lookout for resident reptiles that call the river home. I had the surprise in the spring of a snake falling out of an overhanging tree and bouncing off my head!

    Extinct mackerel?

I would have found this on the peace river sometime this year, and was in my broader collection of teeth in a jar. I’ve been giving some fossils to a very cute family that walk by the house nightly, two 5 year old twin girls and their brother who is 7, and their mom and dad. Yesterday I poured some of teeth into some sand and shells I collected at Venice last year and told them to be sure to also find the very small ones. They did just that and brought this one by tonight and I couldn’t identify it. I grabbed this picture before they left, and the young man said if you identify it, will you please tell me what it is? So here I am hoping I don’t disappoint him, so any help would be appreciated. It’s a tiny tooth, so I don’t have any measurements. And o only have this one picture.

Camel or llama - or both?

Found this beautiful incisor ( upper left ? ) and 2 posterior camelid teeth last week in the peace river near Bowling Green. Wanting to know if they are camel or llama and what occlusal characteristics separate the two. I have read the threads put forth by shellseeker and viewed the UF paleo pictures comparing the two discussing the cementum level as 1 distinguishing characteristic and the presence of crenulations as an additional identifying feature but still have trouble distinguishing the two. Another feature they discuss is the shape of the cusps being either U or V shaped - I assume this is in reference to the shape of the lingual cusps ?

    Looking for access points

Hey everyone, I’m new to the forum and to Florida and was looking for some ideas as to where I can go fossil hunting. I have an inflatable raft with a trolling motor and was really wanting to go off the beaten path. I’ve been to the peace river campground and the boat ramp just around the corner from there but would really like to explore other areas like Joshua creek but don’t know where is a good place to park pic is from a few years ago when I went diving in Venice beach

    ID Help Please

Got back to the Peace River yesterday for a beautiful day of hunting. Temps were in the mid eighties and I was able to go without the wetsuit for the first time this year. Found a lot of the usual teeth and bones along with this one that is new to me. I believe it is a small medial phalanx. It measures only 24mm long x 12mm wide tapering to 6mm with a noticeable hump or curve from end to end. After much research and ruling out several possibilities, just based on size, I found a document on line that I think is a match. The Florida Museum of Natural History Bulletin, Vol 55 with an article on Pleistocene bird fossils seems to provide the ID as an eagle medial phalanx. I tried without success to copy a photo of their specimen so I could provide it for comparison. Here it is without the referenced pictures hoping that someone can confirm the ID. Thanks!
  22. I need help identifying this jaw bone with teeth. I only have the one picture but the molars are pretty distinctive and hopefully are enough. This was found in the Peace River, Florida. Thanks for any help!

    Three Toed Horse?

Picked up both of these in the same gravel pile on thePeace River this past week. I showed the suspected astragalus in the trip section and @Shellseeker, Jack, replied that he thought the size and shape were right for tridactyl. The astragalus along with the second find of what I believe to be is a partial calcaneum have me thinking both could be from a three toed horse. I found an incisor for a three toed horse in this same area last spring. I would appreciate any opinions as to the ID on both of these. Thanks! First up is the astragalus measuring 32mm long x 27mm wide x 19mm high: Next is what I think is a partial calcaneum measuring 46mm x 30mm. Looks to have been broken in half lengthwise.

    Season Ending Hunt

Yesterday I made one last trip to the Peace River to end this hunting season. When I checked the depth and flow gauges it showed both had increased as a result of recent rain but not enough to make a trip unsafe. The one caveat was the prediction of rain and possible thunder storms in my target area by 2 pm. It is really the threat of afternoon thunder storms almost everyday now that is the impetus to end the season. So, I got an early start and was on the river by 7:40 am with the intention of calling it a day by 2 pm. I headed back to the spot I have been digging in for the last four trips. I have been widening my search area as the gravel continues to be plentiful under an initial layer of sand. On arrival the first sifter turned up what appeared to be a good sized, if somewhat deformed, molar that I guessed to be bison. The next sifter also produced what I thought was a possible broken bison tooth (later I was able too see it was a broken horse tooth). This got me excited to think I already had a couple of nice finds to end the season. As I kept digging, pulling up small shark teeth of every variety in each load I became aware of the dark clouds that were continuously sliding by overhead. I pulled up a partial dolphin bulla, turtle scute and complete turtle entoplastron along with a bone that looked to me to be some kind of scapula. At one point a large black cloud rolled in and it rained for about 20 minutes. I didn't worry it would last as I could see blue skies in all directions beyond the storm cloud overhead. Just before noon I threw a shovel full of sand and gravel into the sifter and as the sand fell away there sat a beautiful and complete dolphin tooth. One of the largest I have found! I went to secure it in my kayak right away when I noticed that the dark clouds were no longer sliding by - they seemed to be filling the sky. I decided at that point that if I came up with one more good find I would call it a day. I didn't want to get caught in a thunderstorm on the river. I kept digging for almost an hour and did not come up with that trip worthy find. Looking at the sky I told myself one more load in the sifter and no matter what I did or didn't find I had better head for home. As soon as I dumped the next shovel full of gravel into the sifter I started to laugh as sitting right on top was a very nice astragalus! Deer based on the size. I scooped it up along with the misc shark teeth around it and loaded up the kayak for may paddle back to the car. Just as I pushed off the shore the sky opened up and the rain started pouring down! Thankfully there was no lightening! So the season came to an appropriate end with some nice finds as the rainy season begins. I may try some creek hunting over the summer but the Peace River will have to wait forSeptember at least. Here is a shot of the nicest specimens found yesterday: The astragalus measures 37 mm long x 23 mm wide x 2 mm tall The dolphin tooth measures 31 mm long x 12 mm wide The crown of the suspected bison tooth is 12 mm x 20 mm and 10mm high. I am going to post more photos of the possible bison tooth in the id section along with what I think is some type of scapula to hopefully get a positive id. Good Luck to all those still hunting - I will admit the story of the guy attacked by the alligator in the Myakka River may have also influenced my decision to end the season -LOL!
