    Help with Tooth ID

Looking for some help with the ID on a tooth I pulled up from the Peace River, FL yesterday. On first glance in the sifter I thought it was a nice small chunk of a horse tooth (Equus sp.). When I got home and took a closer look it appeared to be the complete tooth minus 4 root extensions. The occlusal surface of the tooth was one I have not seen before. I tried to match it to Equus but kept coming up empty. I tried bovine with no luck either. From a close look at all four sides I do not believe it is broken and missing any of the crown. It well may be Equus, but I thought I would ask for input from those with much more knowledge and experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The occlusal surface measures 22 mm x 12 mm.

    Good Day on the Peace

Had a great day out on the Peace up in the north section. I'm primarily a tooth seeker but welcome other rare finds. Luckily the river will sever up plenty of teeth for years to come. This was my first time out in my new canoe(previously used inflatable kayaks due to convenience in my Camry.) And it makes a world of difference especially when to 12 ft. dinos make the plunge from the bank. Anyways the water levels were perfect. We found a nice pit that looked to be previously bank dug...... and it caused some concern from passers by. We only encountered 2 groups on the river. One being Fred Mazza and a group of guided customers who went pretty well upstream from us. The others were just a senior couple enjoying the float. Fred expressed his distaste at the bank diggers and I can only assume he thought we were doing the same. LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR. If anyone can pass the word. That is scum of the earth behaviour. I'm a pretty conservative individual and I don't outstep what is written. And I certainly respect; demand respect from the farmers and local gov. out there that boarder the river. I go far out of my way to respect the land and laws. So much so that I won't even dig near a posted sign just to ensure that I cause no ill will between any parties. Which is why I can only hold my tongue is certain situations that I see on most of my trips. Here are the finds for the day. Might get one more trip in before the rain but if not.... i'll be updating with any land explorations. I'm planning on filling that juvenile meg with a silver plug. Let me know if you'd like to see that process!

    Someone smarter than me

Happy Friday! Found this yesterday near the peace river and hoping someone smarter than me can help identify. I've looked online and through all my books but still no luck. Thanks and happy hunting!

Is this what I think it is?

So I found this piece while fossil hunting in the Peace River here in Florida. It immediately gave me the impression of a certain something, so I set aside. It just seemed out of place for where I found it, (for it to be a rock). I have an idea of what it may possibly be, but want to see what others have to say first.

    Need help identifying this tooth.

I'm stumped on this one. I found this over the weekend while hunting in the Peace River in Southwest Florida. It looks like a horse tooth, yet it's too small/thin to be? (was thinking maybe it's just a fragment of a horse tooth, not sure how common that is though?). Or possibly a juvenile ground sloth tooth? I'm fairly new to fossil hunting so I'm still trying to learn in regards to the rarer finds.

First Fossil Haul - Help Please.

    newbie peace river

Hello everyone and just wanted to say that I love the website. I have only primarly hunted shark teeth from the beach, Saint Augustine and Venice beach. I am looking at taking my boys 8 and 15 and girlfriend to the peace river for some fossil and shark tooth hunting. We have kayaks and sifters, shovels and our permit already. We are camping at Brownville park and will be hunting mid May. I am looking for any advice on locations and any other information that might be helpful.

    Mystery Femur

Found this in a creek off of peace river, way way out. It’s not fossilized but it is old for sure. It appears to be a femur of some sort, but I can’t figure out what it belongs to? It is 9 inches long.

    Peace River Jaw

Hi guys! I am new to the forum but am an avid 23 year old fossil hunter and artifact collector. I have been hunting for a good while now and have a large collection from all over Florida. I was recently doing an overnight camping paddle on the peace river to hunt now that the water is low, and I found many things (including some worked flint among the fossils, which was quite surprising) but this particular find I need some opinions on! I’m not convinced that it’s entirely fossilized, though what is confusing me is that it is much heavier than it should be and also did not react significantly to the burn test when compared with modern bone. It is similar to a coyote except in the hinge of the mandible area. I found this under a gravel deposit in a particularly limestone-y area of the river. I have other fossil jaws in my collection which are similar in weight, but not so much color. Any opinions would be appreciated!

    Unknown rib bone

Hello, I have what I believe to be a fossilzed rib fragment from the peace river in florida. I thought it was a dewgong rib bone at first but on the busted side it seems to be "spongy" instead of completely solid.

    Mammal tooth ID?

Mammal tooth looks like a carnivore. Found in peace river FL. Is broken. Bear? Wolf? Thanks!
  20. Did not do well yesterday with the additional foot of water due to the storm, but found this little osteoderm. I don't think it's tortoise because it hasn't got the perimeter feature at it's base and it has a much more dense outer layer. Has anyone seen something similar before? I have several sloth osteoderms, but this doesn't have a similar texture to those either.

    Would this be bison astagalus?

Found in the Peace River, I think it is bison astragalus or horse, not sure. Please comment. Thank you. 1E5CE109-5BA3-4F17-8C50-B920953CEE3D.heic CEDBC9CE-394A-4302-8548-FC939C5EC7F6.heic CEEE7181-8D5B-4CFA-AA1D-7B8F1F28DD84.heic AB8E0575-9298-4C5E-8539-B5E09A2DE1AF.heic
  22. I finally booked a tour with Mr. Mazza on the Peace River. I talked my daughter into driving down from NC, and my sister here in Orlando to make the trip with me. Well, we weren’t disappointed in the least. Between my daughter and I, we found slightly over 500 teeth, not sure how many my sister found yet. Besides teeth, I found a few horse teeth and one capybara tooth. here are just a few of the many treasures found.

    Help with Unknown bone

Picked this bone up in the Peace River, FL last week. I have been trying to find a match since getting it home but have not been successful. I first thought it could be turtle or alligator. I had no luck matching it up there and went to land mammal possibilities but again came up empty on a possible match. So, I am turning to the forum for help with an ID. Any input would be appreciated. The bone is 7 cm long x 3.5 cm wide x 3 cm tall/thick. Thanks for looking!
  24. Hello all, Was hoping for some help identifying some recent finds from the Charlie Creek in the Peace River of Florida. I'm still a novice with ID'ing so I was hoping for some guidance as to where I I went right and wrong. I believe they are, in order: a worn cetacean tooth, turtle nuchal scute, a fragment of stingray barb. The last set I am unsure of. Perhaps some bird clavicles? Thanks for any help you can give, Al
  25. I was out Monday unsuccessfully looking for inverts, but came back with a ton of shark teeth and a few of the more common vertebrate finds. would appreciate an ID id anyone would like to take a chance. The overall length is 101 mm. I'm thinking a dog sized animal but have no clue. Thanks for the look see!
