Went hunting today. One broken Meg, One broken Mako but some interesting finds. I pick up lots of things that trigger my curiosity, like a coprolite or modern catfish barb, or even enamel fragments that have patterns that I try to identify. There are some rocks in this photo, but don't get confused. At 3 o'clock is piece of tusk, and 4 o'clock has 2 pieces of fossilized wood. Dolphin vert, a couple of dolphin bulla, a couple of processes from Baleen whale petrosal. Just goes to show, sometimes I do pick up fossils. I am interested in that likely modern bone at 7 pm... Here are some more photos. Those breaks look clean, like from a butcher's saw. Possibly, I'll learn to recognize this next time I see it.

Crown measures 10.7mm. The small size confuses me. Is it possibly from a baby? I’ve researched but am just getting more confused. I know it’s a brachydont but that’s as far as I’m getting. Baby pig? Baby bear? Opossum? I found it in someone’s discard pile! I haven’t found a tooth like this yet and am excited to have found it in the jaw thanks in advance! @Meganeura @Shellseeker @Harry Pristis

Found the fingernail looking guys in the peace river - someone guessed they might be pieces of parrot fish beaks - any guessed are appreciated.

Just want to share some recent finds from hunting a site given to me by a new friend from this forum. The whole reason for the post is to share the coolest patho tiger shark tooth I’ve ever found…but adding some others finds just for fun. In total, I found 500 shark teeth and 35 meg frags in one day. I don’t usually count them but there were so many that it seemed almost necessary this trip I didn’t find any whole kegs but the posterior one posted above is pretty close to being whole. Here are some of my favorite teeth from the day: I have found a lot of ivory pieces in the past but this chunk of tusk tip is a favorite find as well: (photos do not do it justice) Also found a few beat-up whale tooth chunks, best one pictured below: Biggest sting ray denticle I’ve found and some other smaller ones: Homlesina and glyptodon scutes: Partial tapir jaw with tooth roots: Ray denticles, fish scales, mouth plates: Ear bones (I think), dugong tooth, and my friend’s first ever Meg frags (she was SO excited)

Found this horse tooth today, and while the protocone isn’t isolated, it’s got a hypoconal fossette and has a very low plication count (Simple enamel pattern) - which, according to Hulbert’s book, makes it protohippatine - either Protohipparion or Calippus. I’m leaning Calippus but only because there’s not many Protohipparion species or dentitions to compare to in the book. Measures 23.7mm x 19.5mm. @Shellseeker @Harry Pristis @fossillarry

Another find from earlier this week that I can't seem to nail down an ID for. When I first pulled it out of the Peace River I thought it was a distal or medial phalanx. It is very small and I just dropped it into my pouch and continued hunting. Once I got home and sorted through the day's finds I still thought some type of toe bone and started my search with that in mind. After several hours I came across an image of a larger fossil bone that looked like a match. It was a patella. I realized that patella was a much more likely ID. My problem now is - what species would have a patella so small. Tapir is too big. I started thinking bobcat? raccoon? Haven't been able to find measurements to allow me to zero in on what this bone belongs to. So, I am turning to the group for help. Measurements: 20mm x 15mm x 14mm or 7/8" x 5/8" x 1/2" (the ruler in the photos is metric) Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Found this tooth in my micro mix - it’s about 1-1.5mm long. Has a cusp. Is unbroken (Except maybe missing a cusp on the other side??) but looks like symphyseal lemon shark teeth roots I’ve seen… got no idea! @Al Dente @hemipristis @MarcoSr

I've got a small horse tooth from the Peace River near Wachula. It's got a big split down the middle and seems to be only getting worse. I submerged it in an unknown higher concentrate of paraloid-b72. Do you guys reckon that will be enough to halt the split? It was a deep split nearly separating it in half. I submerged the tooth for a few minutes in solution to completely saturate the tooth.

I found this a while ago in peace river, at first I thought it could be a dugong rib but posted it on Facebook and some said it could be giant sloth tooth Megalonyx jeffersonii - just wondering if that’s what it could be? I did some more research and went to a museum they said it could be the canine.

Some unknowns from a few hours on the river yesterday..I have ideas of what they are but something makes me second guess myself on each of the four finds. First I think I found a piece of whale tooth? This may be one of my new favorites ( @Shellseeker I see where your interest comes from with these if it is indeed a whale tooth - it’s so beautiful inside that I at first thought it was an agatized coral finger). what is the piece protruding from the side? Part of root? Next, I’m pretty sure this is a fish scale, but I’ve found a lot of them in the past and none of them look this symmetrical or are this fat. Is this something else? Or a special/rare one? Or have I just found smaller, thinner ones in the past? This one…I want so badly for it to be a piece of newborn mammoth tooth that I can’t see anything else even though things are telling me it’s not what I want it to be. Break my heart gently please haha. and then there’s this fragment of a tooth…I thought it was a piece of horse tooth when I picked it up but it’s got growth lines (I can’t remember the scientific word) like a beaver or sloth..but it doesn’t resemble my capybara or sloth teeth…hmmm… As always, thanks for taking the time to read my post. So as always lately, today’s trip report is from the last couple trips out! First one with @Parker Brown, second with @Done Drillin - both of which I had some awesome finds with! Though, in @Done Drillin’s case, I’m not sure if the very long trek to the spot was worth it for him. Certainly was for me though! So starting off with some shark’s teeth - don’t normally show these off, but I never find bulls this nice, nor sand tigers much at all, let alone with both cusps. Plus, with 2 gorgeous Makos, how could I not? Next up the bigger mammal stuff. Mastodon lunar bone, coral, a vest from something, partial bison astragalus, partial horse cannon bone (That fits perfectly into the proximal phalanx I have!), a Dugong vert, a whale ear bone, and a camelid scaphoid: Armadillo and Armadillo-like osteoderms, and turtle shell: 2 nice gator teeth, a very beat up bison tooth, a partial llama, and 3 fused shark verts (which mayyyyy be my fav find. Or second fav? Dunno.) Opossum canine, raccoon canine, rodent jaw, horse incisor, tapir incisor, and 2 capybara or beaver teeth sections: Horse teeth and another bison premolar (I have 4 P4’s now!!!! And no complete molars!!!!!!!) Mammoth teeth chunks, including one that’s an incredibly worn spit tooth: Another Paramylodon harlani tooth, this time an m1, a giant armadillo molar, and a very nice Hemiauchenia macrocephela (Camel) tooth: And to cap it off, a Hemiauchenia macrocephela maxilla section with a tooth and the roots from another tooth: Overall super happy with all these finds!

So not too much was found this past weekend, but those trips happen every so often! Still found a couple cool things - almost compete Hubbell Meg, a gorgeous large hammerhead tooth, a pathological tiger shark tooth that’s in beautiful condition, and a thresher shark tooth. Also found a couple Holemsina osteoderms, and a small 3-toed horse tooth. Hopefully this weekend results in better finds!

Was out on the Peace River Tuesday for a day of hunting. One thing I learned from more experienced hunters early on was that it is always a good idea to scan the shoreline and the bottom of the river as you travel about. On this morning my hunter partner for the day arrived just as I got my kayak ready to go. I decided to push off and tread water while he finished loading. I got to the middle of the river and started scanning the opposite bank/shoreline and saw what I thought was a piece of bone sticking up out of the sand right at the water line. It looked to be about 6" long and a couple of inches wide. I went to the shoreline got out of the kayak and reached down to pick up the bone. To my surprise what came up out of the water and sand was a bone structure that looked to be 16" to 18" in overall length. I studied the object for a while and decided it reminded me of a partial pelvic bone structure. My next thought was I hope it isn't cow/bovine. It did seem a bit heavier than I would have expected and seemed to have multiple shadings of color. I shortly realized that most of the color difference was the result of what was buried in the sand vs what was exposed. I put the bone in my vehicle for the day and we went on to our hunting spot. My luck seemed to continue as I later came up with a nice partially rooted tapir tooth: Then I was happy to find the most complete shark vert (scyliorhinoid) I have ever pulled from the bottom of the Peace. The next day my search for the identity of the possible pelvic bone took me to an old post by @Harry Pristis, I believe it was from 2010. He had provided the below diagram to help identify another pelvic bone find. Here is Harry's posting: I was able to use this diagram and the measurements provided to compare to my find. I am happy to say I believe it is a very good match for half of an Equus pelvis. I followed the measurement pattern and came up with the following for my specimen - A = 65mm B = 205mm C = 208mm D = 431mm Here are the photos, the ruler is 38cm long - and you will see the structure just barely fit into my wife's photo light box. Did a burn test this morning and it did not seem to be giving off any smell. A varied bunch of shark teeth, turtle leg spurs, partial dolphin tooth and jaw bone pieces rounded out the day.

I recently found my first unerupted beaver (Holmes capybara) incisor chunk: I hadn’t previously held one. Now that I have, there a couple unidentified things I’ve been saving that may possibly be beaver tooth. This first one - could it be the top of an incisor? Or am I way off and it actually belongs to a tapir? It doesn’t photograph well so I added lots of pics and a video - it matches up with my capybara chuck pretty closely. I found this in the Peace River Florida. I have scoured the web and I can't I identify It. I though maybe a fulgurite but it is way to heavy and solid. Smokey, brown, smooth crystals... Not droosy though which is common in Florida I know, but a similar color. Thx for any help!!

Seems like I can't go a day without picking up an ear bone or two this season. On Friday three turned up. One I positively identified as dolphin periotic, one as horse and the last one is in question. I believe it is cetacean and have looked at those posted by @Boesse in his very informative blog The Coastal Paleontologist. That gave me some suspicions that it may be a partial from either Physeteridae or Ziphiidae 2. And, of course, I could be way off in my idea of what it could be. I also reviewed numerous postings by @Shellseeker along with several of @Harry Pristis informative image postings and think I can pretty much eliminate land mammal. There is an obvious break on one end that interestingly allows a view all the way through the specimen. I tried to capture pictures from all sides, including pictures to show the channels that pass through. Measurements: 43mm x 31mm x 27mm

Hey everyone! I found an exciting array of unusual things in the river today. At first I thought I had a baby sloth tooth, but after some research I believe it’s a giant beaver incisor! @Meganeura you posted something that HAS to be the same as what I found. But can anyone explain why mine has a hole down the center? The shape looks like a sloth tooth to me but the enamel says it’s not sloth, right? Looking for ID confirmation as well as explanation for this hole thank you! …And disregard the sand and dirt still in my nails haha it was a fun day! (Let me know if measurements or better/more pics are needed)

Ankle/Foot bone from something and a mammoth spit tooth, peace River

Forgot to include these in my ID post earlier this morning - so here they are! First up is a mammoth spit tooth - I know that’s what it is, my question is… how much of the tooth do I have? @Harry Pristis @Shellseeker @Brandy Cole @digit Second Is a tarsal/carpal bone. I think. These were found on my property on the river just south of Arcadia. I have absolutely no clue what these are. Everything else I was able to identify. The smaller tooth I found is the first one I've found that is that curved. The larger tooth is unique to me because of the fact that it is concave, which I tried to show in the pictures. Finally the mammal tooth I have had trouble figuring out. Maybe baby mammoth? Thanks in advance guys!

So had a couple VERY productive diving days towards the end of last month, and I’m finally getting around to posting. Went out with a couple of off-forum friends. So I’ll post the finds, and then a little story at the end with the best find. Starting off with teeth - Paramylodon harlani M2, dire wolf canine tip, beaver molar, 2 capybara molar chunks, a partial tapir tooth, 2 raccoon jaws, one with a tooth: Bison premolar, camelid premolar, tapir incisor, partial Dugong tooth, dolphin tooth, and a modern (ish) pig symphysis with an unerupted canine: All my horse stuff, including a thoracic vert, proximal phalanx, astragalus, a carpal/tarsal, 2 incisors, 2 upper teeth, and 3 lower teeth: Bison proximal and medial phalanx, and a bison scapula: Gator stuff - 2 verts, 7 large teeth, 5 scutes including one MASSIVE one: Deer stuff, including multiple big chunks of antler, an astragalus, a proximal and a distal phalanx, many teeth (2 premolars, and my first incisor!): All my Glyptodon and Holmesina osteoderms: Turtle Shell: And finally before the big reveal… here’s some big tusk chunks, including the tip of a tusk: ….WHICH WE FOUND MOST OF THE REST OF! It has since been consolidated and preserved and put back together - coming an inch shy of 5 feet! Going back out this weekend and you can bet there’s gonna be much more to come.

Howdy all. These we’re found roughly a mile/mile and a half up river from Brownville boat ramp. I realize I didn’t include any scale but the smaller piece is just over a quarter in length while the mandible is 2 1/2-ish quarters in length. I spent several hours looking up different lower jaws but remain stumped. It looks like an omnivore but the raised ridges on the edges of the middle 2 teeth look herbivorish (but being new to this I’m sure I’m missing something obvious). My workmate thinks the bigger piece is part of a vertebrae but - again - after searching for a while - I can’t find one with such a curved horn. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello everyone! I will be traveling down to St. Petersburg to visit some close friends, but I'm going to take a day to get wet and maybe find some cool fossils. I've been desperately wanting to look in the Peace River. I plan on renting a kayak/canoe and spending a day on the water. I'm a member of the Alabama Paleontological Society so I have a little experience/knowledge of what I need to be to looking for. Would anyone be willing/able to message me and show/tell me some good areas to possible start looking? I think I wanna focus my choices in the Wauchula/Arcadia areas. Thank you for any help you can give me!

Hello all, my name is Jonah. For Spring break I am going to be near Venice, Florida for a little over a week. I'm posting this to see if anyone would like to hunt fossils in the Arcadia area, or Venice/Caspersan. I have experience in the Peace River and diving Venice. If anyone would like to perhaps join or trade information please pm me. I may be stopping in the panhandle to visit an old friend and hunt there as well. So I'll be equipped with gear for both consolidated and non materials. Perhaps meeting a stranger to share a mutual interest is strange, but heck the hard part was convincing my girlfriend, so here goes Here is where my girlfriend and I will be staying, however we will be traveling over to the Peace River in multiple localities. I also brought a two man dingy for some extra mileage in the river. I also have two shovels not pictured. Some small finds from both Arcadia and Sarasota.

Almost everything was found yesterday at Peace River (FL). I’m still new to fossil hunting. I do my research but still need help - there’s a lot to learn. TIA for anyone who takes the time to let me know what I’ve got here! In order, I think I have: -Deer ankle bone -Scapula? Turtle shell? -Glyptodont scutes -Horse/camel incisor? -Manatee/dugong tooth? -Shells (I know nothing about these but love these two-wanted to share) -Gator/plant? Pattern is only on one side -Deer tooth? -Camel/deer tooth? -Stumped - too many teeth look too similar…tapir? -Recent shark tooth finds (contents of the final picture were found on land in Sarasota county and not at the river) I think that’s more than enough for now I have quite a few horse/bison/camel/llama/etc teeth that I also need help differentiating, but I want to try a little more before asking for help. Any good charts/info that help point out differences in these would be greatly appreciated! Adding some pics of recent shark tooth finds just for the fun of sharing. If you see anything special (rare/pathos/etc) that I need to know about, please let me know! Again, thanks in advance for all the help! Any ideas appreciated - if better pics/measurements are needed, just ask
