Some finds from the red hill fossil site. Please note this site is closed to the public and you need a permit from the government to collect here. The fossils are super fragile. I have a Hyneria tooth but it’s drying from being glued. Some of the rocks are green and interesting. Not sure what elements are at play. Hyneria lindae scales Megalichthys mullisoni scales A mystery fossil that came from the same Megalichthys mullisoni body as the scales and tooth Megalichthys mullisoni tooth with jaw mystery scale plates - any ideas on what belongs to who? Mystery plant stems - any ideas ?

Unknown Microfossil from Pennsylvanian aged Excello Shale in thin section
Samurai posted a topic in Fossil ID
Hello! I was making some thin sections of some material from the Excello shale and found a very large and bizarre structure. Sorry in advance it was too big for my microscope camera to really capture it all, but here is the specimen in question its most likely coated in apatite/phosphate? along with small radiolarian/sponge spicules surrounding it I sent a photo to my professor and he said it could be something new but he would have to see it in person (he is an expert in Radiolarian microfossils) I wanted to post it here and see if anyone had any ideas to throw out. Here it is under 4x power (it is still a little bit of a "thick section" rather than thin section but I plan to grind it down at another time) I don't think it is a radiolarian (unless it is a ginormous one) as the largest I have found from the Excello was about 1000 microns Here is the largest one I can confirm is a Radiolarian (Entactinaria sp.?): Bonus Rad that shows possible apatite/phosphate coating in more detail (old photo) Let me know if you guys have any suggestions or questions let me know and Ill try to aid in any way I can.-

I’ve been reading up about fossils in the Eastern PA region and came across a few papers about vertebrate fossils. Are any of these sites still accessible ?

I found some pyritized plants a few days ago and noticed that one looks like a stem with seed pods. The fossil measures 2 cm and is from the Glenshaw Formation of Beaver County Pennsylvania. I'm nearly certain that what looks like a stem is a stem, but what are the three round things seemingly attached? Help is appreciated, thanks.

Found what looks like a tooth fragment last week. I've only ever found Petalodus teeth in this formation and it doesn't quite look like those. There are no serrations on the fragment. This was found in Allegheny County, PA, is from the Glenshaw Formation and is probably out of the Brush Creek Limestone. Thanks for the help.

Last week I was hunting in my usual location in Allegheny County Pennsylvania (Glenshaw Formation) and found that several of my specimens have splotches of what appears to be pyrite crystals. With some of the broken fossils I could see that even the insides contained gold-colored pyrite. On the other side of these plates were what looked like rootlets covered in a pale green mineral. Is this pale green mineral pyrite as well? Is there some way I could test this? Thanks for the help.

Howdy! I'm finding some beautiful stuff digging in the Glenshaw Formation of Allegheny and Beaver counties. Hoping to find out/confirm what they are. The limestone finds I believe are from the Brush Creek Limestone. As usual, all help is greatly appreciated, thanks! Side view of Wilkingia? Never saw round leaves before Spiropteris? Sigillaria bark? Some sort of bone or root of a Petalodus tooth?

Found this piece in the Mahantango formation of Pennsylvania. I believe the one thing to be a bivalve or brachiopod but I’m not sure. Also, any ideas on the little orange thing? It’s not a Crinoid but I can’t determine what it is.

Clueless, but trying to help my kids figure out what were found.
AmatuerRocker19 posted a topic in Rocks & Minerals
My kids and I went exploring in the woods and they wanted to dig holes. We found some rocks that looked interesting and we would love to learn about them. Although I do not believe either of these subjects are related to what we found, just in case I will add that some of the civil war was fought here and there was also an Indian school. They were found in clay by a creek.
