    Too big for a conodont?

    This came from the Deese Group of central Oklahoma. It seems a little long for a conodont at 7 mm but it doesn't look familiar to me. Any ideas?

    Pennsylvanian arthropod bit

    Maybe a long shot, but I'm hoping someone might recognize this. It looks like a piece of some arthropod exoskeleton to me, but further than that I have no idea. It was collected in the Pennsylvanian of Illinois. The site it collected from is terrestrial/freshwater. It is dominated by plants but has produced bivalves, branchiopods, and shark egg cases – typical fauna for a site like this. Some other possible arthropod bits have showed up, but nothing obviously identifiable. I would expect horseshoe crabs and/or insects will show up eventually, but nothing definitive yet.

  7. As promised, my second trip report covering my day trip last October to the two most famous Pennsylvanian-aged fossil locales in Texas is here! That same Saturday after visiting Mineral Wells and finally finding my first trilobites I made the hour drive north to Lake Jacksboro. For those who don't know, the Lost Creek Dam on the southeastern side of Lake Jacksboro was constructed from earth dug out of a borrow pit a short walk away. As the lake and its dam happen to sit on top of the Finis Shale Member of the Graham Formation (although there is debate that , which dates back to the Late Pennsylvanian (or the Late Carboniferous for any international fossil hunters), the digging of the pit exposed a multitude of fossils that are still regularly being eroded out after every rain today. It's one of my favorite sites I've ever visited for the incredible diversity of the fossil species on display and the extreme ease with which someone willing to sit down on the shale can find them. Having just visited Mineral Wells, the variety of brachiopods, bryozoans, gastropods, bivalves, nautiloids, and corals was a welcome respite from the endless landscape of crinoid columnals I had just walked all over in my search for trilobites. Making my way across the dam and walking up to the expose shale slopes of the borrow pit, I was instantly greeted with the equivalent of an all-you-can-eat buffet for fossils. Everywhere I looked I saw something new. Right away I found a tripmaker: a huge shiny blue conulariid. It was complete too which was nice considering every one I had found on my first trip had been a broken fragment barely two centimeters across that I could only identify because of their ridged texture. Similar in appearance to modern day sea anemones when they were alive, there's nothing really like conulariids around today so I really enjoy finding such strange animals. Immediately following the conulariid was a second tripmaker: my first complete goniatite! Although small and lacking the ornate sutures that some species possess, I was just happy to finally find one that was complete. Broken fragments of other coiled nautiloids litter the shale slopes and I can only guess that there must be an incredibly short window to find one whole after it erodes out before it is destroyed. My guess is this one is Schistoceras. On the heels of one nautiloid find came another. I saw another mistakable coiled shell on the top of one of the slopes. Although it was flattened, I wasn't too upset. This specific specimen is most likely Domatoceras sculptile. Next up was a change of pace, with the largest brachiopod I've ever personally come across. The pedicle valve was speckled with stout but tiny spines and the shell material was partially stained a pinkish-orange in places which made a nice find even nicer. Identifying it wasn't hard as only one brachiopod at the site gets this large, Linoproductus. It was after finding the Linoproductus that I returned to the tops of the shale slopes. I had heard that the strata exposed here were the likeliest to produce the one type of fossil I was holding my breath hoping I might find. As everybody knows, my fossil interests lie with vertebrates first and foremost. I had never found one of the teeth that are colloquially said to have come from Pennsylvanian sharks but that actually come from a strange family of extinct cartilaginous fish called the Petalodontiformes. They would have cut an unusual figure during the Pennsylvanian with their buck-toothed grins featuring teeth that weren't sharp or even particularly hard like almost all fish and shark teeth that have evolved since. Fortunately I was in luck that day and the extra attention I had been paying to anything with a white enamel-ish look to it worked out. The tooth was missing the fragile root, which was expected, and about half of the blade, but I didn't care - I had found the oldest vertebrate fossil of my fossil hunting career! (Unfortunately I don't have any in-situ picture as I was too excited when I first saw the tooth to remember to take one. ) A couple paces in a different direction along the top of the outcrop and I had found a second tooth - this one possessing most of the blade but still no root. There was some matrix encasing the very tip that I later cleaned off when I returned home. Here are the two teeth side by side: Plus a picture of the smaller tooth once it was prepped: I tentatively identified these as either Petalodus ohioensis or Petalodus seratodus, but the in-and-out curving edges of the teeth don't perfectly match pictures I've seen online. I can only guess that this is just variation depending on the tooth's position in the mouth, or there might be a species of Petalodus at Jacksboro that just hasn't been noted yet. The sun was starting to go down by this point and I decided it was time to make my way back across the dam and to my waiting car. But as luck would have it there was one final surprise in store for me. Piled at the bottom of the slope were several huge chunks of nautiloid shell, arranged almost as if someone had visited the site before me and picked them up, before eventually deciding they weren't worth the trouble on their way out and dumping them on the ground. That there were two different species present seemed to support this. The two large chunks towards the top of the photo are from the grypoceratid nautiloid Domatoceras sculptile, absolutely the largest variety of coiled nautiloid you can find at Jacksboro. The smaller chunk with the bumps along the rim is a different nautiloid, Metacoceras. Here are some additional pictures of the Domatoceras chunks: And that was it for my Pennsylvanian day trip! Just a couple of weeks before I had put together a bucket list of all the different types of fossils I most want to find, and I was very happy that after this trip I was able to cross my first trilobite, a complete goniatite, and a Petalodus tooth off the list.     I've found some nice looking gastropods, although I'm not certain what type. I'd like to hopefully ID this type before cleaning this specimen any further. This comes from Pennsylvanian aged Deer Creek Limestone. I thought maybe it could be an Amphiscapha?

  12. I’ve been trying to ID this huge cephalopod I found from the Glenshaw Formation in Brooke County, West Virginia. So far, I’ve considered the following: Millkoninckioceras Kummel, 1963 Mahoningoceras Murphy, 1974 I was all in on the latter name until I noticed the sutures were fairly straight compared to the deep convex flank sutures. Whitney (1882) called the sutures deeply concave on the holotype of Mahoningoceras (original description in photos below). The umbilicus is open. The specimen appears to be flattened. I believe the ventrolateral shoulder is about the middle of the bottom whorl in the second photo with a scale. The largest coiled nautaloid I've found in this formation could fit within the center whorl of this specimen. It seems that the body chamber would add another 1/4 whorl length.     Acanthodes bridgei Acanthodian fish Late Pennsylvanian Marlin Quarry Hamilton Kansas I believe this is a juvenile specimen as the squamation is only developed on less than half the length of the body and this is a pretty small specimen. The preservation on the fossil is amazing as the scales, spines and details of the head are beautifully preserved in high detail. Specimen purchased from @connorp

    Mineral Wells, TX Fossil ID

    Last week my friends and I stopped by Mineral Wells in Texas to do some fossil hunting and it was really fun! However, I'm not familiar with this type of fauna and I was wondering if anybody could help ID them for me. I think I got a decent representation of what is available at the site but there's definitely other fauna there that I didn't spot. The first group are bryozoans and they have this really cool texture on them. How easy is it to identify them to genus or species level? The second one on the first row was also really interesting. It's flatter but I'm not sure if that's the preservation and not what it looked like in life. The first one on the second row was really interesting as a bryozoan colony seemed to wrap around a crinoid stem! The second group are crinoids! I hadn't realized they were so diverse, although they were the most common fossil I encountered by far. This is the cross section of the first row. This is the cross section of the fourth row. The third one has a really neat pattern on it on the outside. And finally, the fifth row has a crinoid base(?) and what might be a small crinoid impression? Not entirely sure. The third group are shells. The variety of shapes was really cool. This first row are flat and rounded. Are these clams? These first two on the second row are extremely flat but have these knobs on the shell. These first two on the third row are very simple with a general slope. The last two on the second row have a really neat shape. They're concave on the inside as well. And the last two on the third row kinda remind me of little hats haha I also managed to find some snails(?). This first one was particularly tiny This larger one is unfortunately crushed. And these last two shells are super thin. The first one is a scallop(?) and one of my favorites shells I recovered because its complete with both halves! This next one is what I think is a nautiloid shell. Sort of reminds me of ones like baculites. Onto other inverts, I found a spine from an echinoderm. Sea urchin? And I was pretty excited to find two pieces of trilobites! I only found the hind parts but one of my friends found a head which was cool. Now to unknowns. This first one reminded me of a hybodont tooth but I wonder if its a crinoid piece. There's some texture on it that looks like the ones on the stem fragments. This second looks like a bryozoan but I wanted to make sure. These third ones have some really interesting shapes and texture and I have no idea what they are. This fourth one is a long fossil with a groove. There's a texture inside the groove but again, not sure what it is.

    Reed pith or 3D leaf?

    I actually found this several years ago, around the time I started collecting, and always assumed it was a type of Calamites. However, I recently noticed that Cordaites leaves (such as this example) have a very similar appearance. I wouldn't have expected it to have been preserved so... cylindrically though? Roughly 1.5" wide. Thoughts?

    More seeds?

    Last Saturday I had the pleasure of going on an ESCONI trip to a giant shale pile in Danville, IL in search of Pennsylvanian fossils. I was fortunate enough to find a beautiful Trigonocarpus seed. (I included it for comparison to specimen 3). Second specimen seems to be another seed I can’t quite identify. After some research, I’ve come up with basically nothing. It’s textured, and has the shape of a teardrop. (Below) As for number 3, I actually just noticed it today while going through some of my finds. I don’t know if it’s wishful thinking, but it looks kinda similar to my Trigonocarpus seed, but with more ribs. I was thinking possibly Holcospermum because of how ribbed it is? Unfortunately it’s a little hard to see as not much of it is exposed. Could just be nothing, but I thought it looked peculiar. (Below)

    Mazon Creek-like Indiana nodules

    Hello, I have a big batch of concretions from the Pennsylvanian Shelburn Formation of Sullivan County, Indiana, USA. They aren't mazon creek but a lot of the fauna seemed similar, and I wanted to ask for identification on them. Some have been ID'd generically and most of them are said to be probable partial shrimp.     Paraconularia crustula, Jacksboro Finis Shale, Graham Fm Feb, 2023 Jacksboro is one of the few sites where Conulariids are a common find. These enigmatic fossils are thought to belong to Cnidaria. Conulariids are actually known to produce pearls, though I'm not sure if these have been discovered specifically at Jacksboro.
