Recently took a 2 day trip up to Gingin which is around an hour drive north of Perth and a nice little town. Went with my dad and checked out some Chalk exposures at One Tree Hill and Molecap Hill. The weekend we went just so happened to be in the middle of a heatwave around Perth with temperatures reaching 40 degrees around midday so we had to do the hunting around dawn and dusk. We ended up finding some nice shells, sea urchin spines, cool little gastropods and had a great time. Chalk exposures on the southern wall of the quarry at molecap hill Tiny gastropod fossil (sounds better than worm fossil) in situ on the ground Finds from molecap hill: Inoceramid, unknown shell and some microfossils (gastropods, sea urchin spines and tiny shells) from surface collecting and sifting The only find from One Tree Hill was this nice little shell positive and negative my dad found cracking some (glauconitic?) nodules

Found this while splitting some chalk (80 myo) from Molecap Hill Quarry in Gingin. The whole section of “scales” is about 2 cm long. Not sure what these “scales” are but my imagination goes to fish scales. Any ideas?

Is it possible this is a weird shark/megaladon tooth? Chances are it’s just an uncannily shaped rock, but I’m wondering what other views are, or whether it’s even possible for them to be completely rock like this? Found this on the beach in Perth Australia (have no ruler with me but roughly 3cm in length, 2.5 wide and maybe 1.8 cm depth)

Hello! The other day I visited a museum here in Perth and noticed they sold fossils in the gift shop. I bought a fossil of an ammonite as a gift for my younger sister, who absolutely loves anything prehistoric. The store gave no information other than it was an ammonite, but having bought it here in Perth I suppose it might well be from Australia at the very least. I apologise for not having more a specific location. If necessary I could send them an email and ask, though from the conversation I had at the store it seemed like the gift store staff weren't particularly well-informed themselves unfortunately. They came "pre-sliced" but I'm not sure if the internal structure helps at all. I also took exact measurements, as instructed. I hope the photos are sharp and well-lit enough! Thank you in advance!

Hello All! I've looking at a trip around the Perth Australia area hunting for fossils - My mate and our kids would love to spend a day digging and sifting looking for some fossils (although I suspect my kids will lose interest in 10 minutes) I've heard of the area around mole cap hill but I'm unsure where to start - If anyone is planning a trip I've love to tag along and get the gist of it all as I'm unsure where to start.

Hi, I have an 8yr old daughter who is nuts about fossils and dinosaurs. After several years of thinking she will grow out of it I've come to the conclusion I need to help her develop her love of all things dinosaur and take her of a few fossil hunting trips. Problem is, I have no idea where to go or what to look for. Any help to get us started would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi everyone from sunny Perth Long time watcher and now starting my journey hunting down fossils is Western Australia. My my dad used to take me when I was 4-5 but that was over 30 years ago and then he passed away. Now that I have kids I’m looking to show them how to do it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all, This has bugged me for over 30 years and I'd love to know what I might have found all those years ago. HINT: Its the thingy on the right, not the quid! In 1987, I was lucky enough to go and see my extended family in Perth, Western Australia. On one day we went to Scarborough Beach, near Perth, and not being one for sunbathing I went foraging on the shoreline. I found this, put it in my pocket and forgot about it until I got home. My geology teacher at school thought it might be Nummulites Laevigatus, but was he right? I've seen nothing like it since. From the photographs you can see that the 'lumpy' side is asymmetrical however what is harder to see is that the 'whorl' side is very slightly concave, moving in as it follows the curve to the centre. Is it fossil? Was my teacher correct? Could it even be man made? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Carl

Hi all, After a looooong break from doing any kind of palaeontological (sp.) stuff I am just starting to think about digging out (excuse the pun) the old hammer and having a look about. My main issue being that I left my home country, England, about two years ago and moved to Perth in Australia. So I was just wondering if anyone had any bright ideas as to what can be found where around this place? I've already read Frostyoceras's post here but there isn't a great deal of info in it and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of any good resources. Particularly interested to know if there are any good outcroppings in or on the way to Albany as my family are heading down there on holiday in a month or so's time for a holiday. I have a vague suspicion it's a bit metamorphic, but who isn't these days? (Terry Pratchett quote alert) Apart from the interest in all things ancient I am a dad to two little 'uns and a husband to one slightly less little one, I'm pretty close to middle aged and like reading lots of stuff, writing other stuff, and listening to Rock Music (no, really!). Hi fellow fossil aficionados, greetings from Perth, Australia! This forum looks great. I love the family friendly atmosphere. I'm forever giving fossil shark and Mosasaur teeth to local kids. Love to see the youth excited about the past (which leaves me feeling better about the future)! Who else is from Down Under? I need to find people in Perth I can go hunting and exploring with! Where are you?? There's lots of good stuff here. Tomorrow I'm heading to an exposed Pleistocene seabed in Mosman Park (inner city!). Life is good 🐂
