    Is This Petrified Wood?

I found this mystery rock on a lake shore in central Minnesota. Is it petrified wood? How does one tell whether or not a rock is petrified wood? Thanks for the help!

    Fossil wood?

Hello i found this peculiar fossil while looking for late neogene coral fossils(which I found) I’ve fossil hunted in this area for years and haven’t found anything like this so I was thinking maybe this is petrified wood from when Arabia was green 15-4000 years ago what are your thoughts? I would love to know thank you I appreciate it
  3. Hi, I found this piece of stone in a southwestern Arizona desert. I thought it was petrified wood and tumbled/polished it and made into a necklace 2" x 1". But I am having second thoughts that maybe it is really a fossil marine plant or animal? The area I was in was under water at one time. Thanks, Jen Marie

    Petrified wood in metamorphic rock?

Hello! Please help me find out if the arched bands showing up after polishing this metamorphic rock are just random artifacts of sedimentation or an indication for petrified wood? The material reacts to vinegar. I picked the stone in Romania, Harghita county. Thank you!

    Petrified wood anomaly

First, a bit of backstory on how I got the pet wood this is from. A neighbor of mine lives/lived down at the end of the alley. Rockhound & rock cutter. I've gotten to know him a bit & he's given me a few small pieces here & there. He recently & suddenly moved out of the house & a couple weeks later a contractor was tearing it down. They are currently building a new house on the spot. My neighbor was going to try to catch me before they moved out to tell me to grab whatever rocks I wanted from the yard (I ran into him yesterday at the local parade), but wasn't able to with me working nights. Turns out he had a largish pile of rocks in front of his shop that basically got bulldozed & probably buried. He told me if I saw any of them, to go for it & take them home. I found one... a chunk of petrified wood that may be partly agatized and/or opalized, not sure yet. Turns out it weighs 31 pounds. It mostly survived a fight with a backhoe, taking a bit of damage, but is mostly intact. Small pieces came off while cleaning it up & I saved some of them. One is sort of giving me fits. First pic is of another piece that came off close to the one in question, end shot showing it to be pet wood. Pic 2 is with the Dino-lite leds on, pic's 3 & 4 is with them off, but using a small led flashlight. Pic 4 is with the light at a slightly below angle. All 3 are the same magnification of 50 x & in same position. Pic 5 is of another section to the left of the others. Not sure what to make of these. They sort of look like worms.

    Petrified wood mystery

What could have caused this? Doesn't appear like it's white all the way through.

    Mineralization

Hello everyone, am curious as to what the gold colored mineral replacement could be on this piece of petrified wood??

3 of 3, Pet Wood or No?

This is the last of three from me, of these likely petrified wood pieces that I am just curious about. To recap, I believe it's pet wood but am just checking my curiosity. Found in western Nebraska, near the river or canal off the river, lots of pet wood around here but these look like they could be bone. Apologies, I did my best to get the lime off of this one but it's not as well-preserved as the other two and I didn't want to keep chipping away at it lest I break it. Brute strength. I did my best with the pics, the piece itself is spongy looking and grainy.

    More Petrified Wood?

This is the second of three pieces I've recently picked up that I'm a little stumped by. I'm guessing they are all three petrified wood unless someone tells me otherwise. All three were found in western Nebraska not far from the North Platte River or the canal fed by the river.

    Petrified wood or something else?

It's been a long time since I've done this, and a few weeks since renewing my membership here, but I've read the specs again and I think I'm ready to start posting the pieces that have brought me back to you experts here in this forum. I was in Pennsylvania when I joined the forum the first time. I am now in western Nebraska and have become more rockhound more than mudlark simply by the nature of what the earth brings up. Most of the time I am satisfied with my own identification or don't need one to be happy with a piece. I have recently found a couple of things that baffle me. I've been on the lookout for petrified wood, it's rather everywhere out here, and picked up the piece I'm posting here and two more I'll post separately. My guess is that they are likely petrified wood. However, they look like they could be something else that I dare not speak aloud lest I get my hopes up. If any of the three are this fossil of which I dare not speak, this ID post will tell me and I can be surprised and delighted. So, petrified wood or something else?
