I dug this directly from the so-called “red bed” (making it Permian) in the north sulphur river. I thought it might be petrified wood, but I am confused as to what the piece is embedded in it. Any ideas?

We found this while cutting trails in our forest, on the banks of our spring fed natural pond. We live in southeast Oklahoma, in the Ouachita National Forest, in the Kiamichi River Valley. All of which used to be underwater eons ago. Every single person who has seen it in person, has said it looks like a petrified turtle. It’s heavy like stone & the top is darker with a slight greenish tint & is very smooth & not rough like the bottom or like a rock. The outdoor lighter is 12 inches long. Thank you so much in advance, for your help & insights into what it could possibly be!

Need help in identifying this it was found when digging holes for a fence. It appears the tip was hit with my auger and broke off since it had a fresh break on the end. My 5-year son located near one of the holes and doesn't remember which one so I'm not sure if I want to go digging all the holes to find the rest of it. Thanks in advance!

I found this at the Siskiyou Pass near the border of Oregon and California. It was in 2 pieces when I found it - that fit together. In this same area I found lots of petrified wood including petrified palm wood and other petrified wood both large and small. Could this be a petrified palm nut? The length of the 2 pieces together is over 15 centimeters and the diameter where it broke is over 6 centimeters.

I found a 5 centimeter (2 inch) diameter rock in Oregon. When I hit it with a hammer (several times) it split perfectly in half. In the middle there was what appeared to be a seed - about the size, shape, and color of an apple seed. The rock had all these "carpels" or "rays", "flakes" coming out from the center. I sanded one half of the inside of the rock. I did not sand the outside. The outside is very hard. The inside is sort of flaky. The outside could not be scratched with a fingernail or coin. Acid did not make the rock fizz or do anything. Someone thought it might be a concretion but I doubt that because of the pattern and "flakes". What do you think it is?

My brother collects rocks, I however do not. I was at a local auction and there were a number of neat rocks I purchased a bunch and turns out for the most part I did really well. However, this one neither of us knew about but given they came from a museum I was hopeful, the label reads “Petrified turtle eggs, sack of three eggs, Lamedeer, Montana.” I have a whole five bucks invested into it so it won’t hurt me if it’s just a rock.

Supposedly these came from the Missouri River valley in central South Dakota. One old timer says he was told they are petrified bones. They are very solid and high strength. Somewhat symmetrical on the longitudinal axis. Sandstone appearance on surface. What are these, any ideas?

In our cottage in an island there are these big rocks that were dug up from the ground when we first built our house but there is one rock in particular that looks like it may have been underwater at some point and I sure am interested in the possibility of maybe finding some fossils, what's your opinion ?does it look like it may have been underwater? And could this area have fossils? Thanks

His all I found this what I assume is some sort of petrified bone. It is shiny and very hard, and seems mineralised. About 2.5cm long by about 2. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I only joined the forum after finding this.

While rockhounding in the area of the Niagara Penninsula, I found an odd-shaped piece of metal about 5 inches beneath very thick, wet mud. The place in which I found the object was in a very shallow stream, which ran over sedimentary rock of the pre-Cambrian shield. After a closer inspection at home, I believe I may have found an iron-mineralized piece of a petrified wood, intertwined with two separate vines. A friend suggested it may be a rusty drill bit although I have doubts based on the location it was found. It is 3 1/2" long and 3/4" wide. It is heavy and seems hard like a metal. It is somewhat magnetic. It appears mostly brown, with spots of orange, and some light brown mud residue. I am assuming the vibrant orange colour is rust although there are also pale-orange spots which resemble the interior of a stick. Before cleaning the specimen, I would appreciate any opinions/advice. I am only able to attach two photos, but I will upload the rest in the response section. Any help is much appreciated!

I was hiking in the smoky mountains in NC near Maggie valley when I came across this, what I thought to be a petrified mushroom. It seems to be pretty since I very rarely see mushrooms up in the Smokies

Hello everyone! I have no experience with fossils whatsoever, but this looks like a fossil to me. It is very heavy and feels like a petrified bone / cartilage or shell of some kind. Very peculiar. What is it? I bought it in a second hand shop in Sweden. Thank you in advance!

I work in the coal mine in South western pa. Northern wv. I find petrified wood mostly fern tree piece but can't find much about them online. I also find what I think is pyrite.I know that they are mostly fern. They are out of the Pittsburgh seam and are around 330 million years old. Any other info would be appreciated.

Well hello everyone it’s been a while for me as it’s been a rough couple of months Traveling to be with my late Sister who battled to the end with Pancreatic Cancer. So I crossed off three of her bucket list adventures she wanted to do in our return trip to Texas. She wanted to find a Sharks Tooth, a snail ( Gastropoda) and dig for Crystals. Well as as I said we just got back from a two week stay on the west coast and the weather was not very good to us. But our first stop we had arranged to dig for Petrified Wood on the Dobell Ranch. Well when we got their to our surprise nobody was around and everything was closed up. So I called to ask what happened and the owner was very sorry as the Tucson Fossil and Minerals Show was in action and she had to delivery a tree they dugout a week ago and forgot about us. Well long story short she said no worries just go and start looking!!! So guess what we did!! i was looking for smaller pieces for my jewelry making and I found about 25 pounds of nice material. I also found some Rainbow petrified wood which made the trip worth it!! Pictures to follow as I have to crop them and cleanup the pictures to fit and download

This was found in SW Washington, Pacific County. Looks like a petrified mushroom from reference books but have not come across this one in particular.
