    Kem Kem Bone Grab Bag

    Every year at the Denver fossil show it seems like I pick up some unidentified Kem Kem material. This is because for one it’s cheap, but also because it’s kinda fun to investigate this material. Here are eight pieces I picked up as a bulk set. I have some idea about identification on each of these but would love to hear other’s input. In the following pictures I have the top row being archosaur fossils and the bottom row being fish fossils. My guesses: 1. Caudal(?) vertebra centrum. Croc or theropod, but probably croc. 2. Croc dorsal vertebra 3. Croc centrum 4. Theropod pedal phalanx. Specifically, the distal-most phalanx of toe 1 (the “dew claw”). Narrowest ID I think I could guess we would be Ceratosauria indet., should probably be labeled as Theropoda indet. 5. Two fused fish vertebrae. Are these identifiable any more than this? 6. Gar or gar-like vertebra 7. Chondrichthyan fish vertebra. Maybe Onchoptistis numida? Can that determination even be made? 8. A gigantic ganoid scale. Any guesses just based on size? I’m unfamiliar with all the monster fish in this rock unit. Thanks :)

    T-rex toes

    Here's a (hopefully) interesting question on a topic well outside my wheelhouse. In the break room at the Florida Museum of Natural History sitting on top of the double refrigerators is a cast of a coelacanth, a painted resin cast of a Tyrannosaurus rex foot (the left one), and inexplicably a cleaning sponge that one of the artists at the museum has modeled into a cartoon character named Robert with quadrilateral trousers. I've been looking at these objects while nuking my lunch in the microwave oven next to the refrigerators for several months now. Just yesterday I finally noticed that there was something odd (to me) about the T-rex toes. Leading up to the ultimate distal/ungual on each of the three toes (disregarding the hallux "dew claw") are a varying number of phalanges. Somehow I had naively assumed that the number of phalanges in each toe would for some reason be consistent. For reference, each of the digits in our human hands have two phalanges (proximal and intermediate) leading up to the distal phalanx (ungual) on all but our highly useful opposable thumbs. Our thumb (pollux in medical speak) makes up for the missing intermediate phalanx by having a metacarpal that has more mobility than the metacarpals of our other digits. I found it fascinating to learn that the 3 primary toes of a theropod dinosaur, labeled II, III, & IV, have (very conveniently) 2, 3 & 4 phalanges leading up to the distal phalanx. I came across this excellent artwork from a paleoartist online: https://emilywilloughby.com/art/gallery/diagrams/theropod-foot-comparison It seems that our modern day dinosaurs (birds) share this same asymmetry in toe bones as the T-rex that started this little investigation. I'm guessing that to those who have taken anatomy or physiology classes or have a deeper understanding of birds or dinosaurs this would be common knowledge but somehow I've never paid enough attention to theropod feet till now. I do so enjoy learning new tidbits of information (quite regularly from this forum). In the off chance that this might be enlightening to other members I thought I'd share my micro-epiphany instigated by some T-rex toes on top of a fridge. Cheers. -Ken
  4. Hi, I recently found a bone that looks like either a vertebra or a phalanges. The bone is from eastern North Carolina, legally collected from public land, and comes out of either the Cretaceous Tar Heel or Bladen formations. Both marine and freshwater organisms as well as dinosaurs are known to be found from the general area. The bone does not look like it comes from a turtle or crocodile, but I could be wrong. Is it a dinosaur or mosasaur bone, or something else? And no, there is no way this bone is Cenozoic. Thanks!
  5. Just bought these little beauties. Were sold as 'dromaeosauridae sp.' finger bones. Ad also named them deltadromeus. Now, I'm aware of the difficulties with ID'ing Kem Kem theropod but I like buying cheap-ish fossils and then trying to figure out what they really are. Part of the fun I guess. Total length of both bones is ~63mm. Not sure if the arrangement is correct, bones seem to fit well. They're small, which makes me wonder if they're theropod at all. Did look into deltadromeus, found the gualicho shinyae which might be the best reference point it seems. Bones do look like some of the gualicho material, but more like the feet and not hands. Then again: you'd expect bigger bones for dinosaur, unless these are juvenile I guess. There are some minor repairs on the smaller bone. Nothing too crazy. So I'm hoping you guys can help out, as always! Am I looking at (juvenile?) theropod bones with a likeliness of being deltadromeus (as advertised) or at something completely else?

    Thescelosaurus assortment

    Hello, a set of Thescelosaur bones --radius and phalanges and ungual that I am interested in. From Montana USA. Not all from same specimen (except the phalanges). Anyone think it all looks ok, or see any red flags?

    A cool Moroccan mosasaur bone pile I acquired, sadly the matrix is so soft the piece broke in transit, but thankfully the splits missed all but 1 smaller bone. I'm considering just removing them from the matrix, and maybe mounting them in the same positions again, but I haven't decided yet. *more info to follow

    Florida Cave Bear or Bison Toe Bone?

    Good evening fossil folks, I found a small bone on a Tampa Bay beach on the west coast of Florida. After doing some research I saw similarities to a cave bear toe bone and/or bison. It's approximately 1" x 3/4" and very worn with a baseline crack. I have 7 photos of different angles. Can you ID? Thanks all!

    Horse Teeth 'Modern' horse teeth are very hypsodont (high-crowned) to deal with wear caused by eating gritty and/or fibrous foods like grasses. A mature horse may have as many as 44 teeth, which include: 12 incisors (6 upper and 6 lower) Canine teeth are usually absent in female horses but may be present in males. Cheek teeth (4 premolars and 3 molars per side) have very complex enamel patterns. The first premolars (upper and lower) in horses (sometimes called the 'wolf teeth') are vestigial and often absent. Upper cheek teeth (premolars and molars) can be recognized by the relatively square shape (except for the second premolar and third molar) when viewing the occlusal (chewing) surface. Lower cheek teeth (premolars and molars) can be recognized by the relatively rectangular shape when viewing the occlusal (chewing) surface (except for the second premolar and third molar). Horse 'foot' bones 'Modern' horses are monodactyl (one-toed). The metapodials (hand and foot bones) are reduced to a single unit on each leg. There are three 'toe bones' - phalanges (singular is phalanx) on each foot...phalanx I, phalanx II and phalanx III. The third phalanx is the 'hoof core' Unfortunately, I have never collected an intact phalanx III so I have not pictured one here. The astragalus (ankle bone) is only present on the hind legs.
