I made a trade with a fellow Texas fossil hunter - sent him some Central Texas goodies for some North Texas Post Oak Creek gravel. I was hoping to get a gallon bag to look through in my microscope.....and he sent me FIVE gallon bags full of just scooped up out of the creek gravel! So far I've made it through ONE and a half of those bags! It may take me the rest of 2020 and right on through most of 2021! So I thought I'd post some of the good stuff I've found so far. Starting it off with THE TEETH. There were some larger teeth, nothing great, no ptychodus, which I was hoping for, but the mini finds have been outstanding. I have tried to ID them but if I am inaccurate in any of them , please let me know! Here is Part Two: The most common teeth: Goblin shark- Scapanorhynchus Size 1/2 inch (13 mm) My favorite - Squalicorax Size 1/4 inch (6 mm) Pretty sure these are all Cretolamna but I am not completely certain. I know the top left on is Cretolamna appendiculata. Size 1/4 inch (6 mm) And then there are the shark teeth that do not look like your "typical shark tooth"! These are Cantioscyllium (Nurse shark) Size 1/8 inch (3 mm) (Top row shows front and back of one and bottom row is front and back of another) Another pair of really interesting odd teeth Top Row: Kiestus texanus (front and side) Bottom Row: Rhinobatos lobatus (front and back) Size 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) Hybodont Meristodonoides Teeth and an Enchodus Fish tooth Size : Hybodonts 1/8 inch and Enchodus 1/4 inch Finally. lots and lots of Sawfish teeth! I am having a hard time distinguishing between Ptychotrygon and Texatrygon, so I just put them all together: Size 1/8 (3 mm) except bottom right red one which is 1/16 inch 1.5 mm) Other Teeth - I think the bottom left round one is a Pycnodont? Size 1/8 inch More to come! Crab Claws and Vertebras and other stuff!

Here are my finds from my latest POC visit. Made a decent haul with my best Ptychodus yet and my largest tooth so far here. The tooth was about 1.5 inches. I also found a small ptychodus with no root but it did have very defined grooves. Pictures 2 and 3 are the large Ptychodus and picture 4 is the 1.5 inch tooth. 5 and 6 are the small Ptychodus. Picture 7 is the creek wall matrix I was looking in for teeth and 8 and 9 are the actual teeth I found in the matrix. Does anyone know if this is original matrix? I was able to find several teeth sticking out but several of them were also just pieces of teeth, like you find on the gravel bars, and not complete intact teeth. I was hoping if they were from the original matrix the teeth would be complete. And Finally I have a game for you. See if you can find the tooth in picture 10. For some reason many of the teeth I found this trip were highly camouflaged haha. The rest of the pictures are just closeups. I initially thought I found some mosasaur material but the bone feels modern to me now that it is dry. I also found my first vertebrae this trip. Looking at the other posts it seems like verts and artifacts are pretty easy to find but I guess I just don't have the eye for them as I have only found this one vert and have never found an artifact. Here are some finds from two trips in early November. Several ptychodus with one nice large one, a ton of shark teeth shards, a couple pieces of mammal enamel, and some unknowns. Im posting the shark teeth first and then will post the pictures of some of the others. Let me know what you think. Anyone know the species of the teeth in picture 1? Here are pictures from a recent trip to Post Oak Creek in Sherman Texas. Found several shark teeth but all of them broken and most in bad shape. I also found several non-fossilized material. I'm not sure if it is modern or a little older. It is all small. The one with the jaw still has two small teeth incased in it. Also I have no idea what the teeth are that are rounded. One of the pictures is a partial shark tooth still in the matrix. Post Oak Creek, Texas - Part Two: Verts Crabs Etc..

Part Two of my Post Oak Creek matrix finds. A fossil friend sent me 5 gallon bags of gravel and I have been slowing making my way through (one and a half bags done so far!) and here are some of my best finds. The previous post (Part 1) were all teeth - shark and sawfish and fish etc... This post is ALL THE OTHER STUFF. Here is a link to the first post in case you want to see the TEETH. My favorites- Crab Claws! Two sides of two claws - Size 1/4 inch More claws and maybe a fragment of carapace? Size: Claws - 1/8 inch and fragment 1 inch Vertebras - So many little Verts! These are my favorites: Shark Verts (Mostly?) Not completely sure about Top Left one...anyone know? It's oddly square. It's also larger - 1/4 inch The rest are 1/8 inch Fish Verts Size 1/8 inch Some neat Dermal plates. Pretty sure Top Left and Bottom Right are Turtle. The others are maybe fish and shark.... Size Turtles are 1 inch and the others are 1/8 inch More Dermals - Size 1/16 inch Sawfish Rostrals Except Bottom left...not sure what that is. Perhaps a tooth? Size 1/16 inch Other various things: Top Left I think if a Pycnodont tooth, (1/8 inch) Top Right is maybe a Sclerorhynchus tooth or rostral? (1/4 inch) I really don't know! But it is interesting! These two are each 1/8 inch

I have been able to identify most of the shark and batoid micro fossils I pulled out of the matrix I got from @Captcrunch227 . There a few teeth that I can not identify though so I thought I post them here. I think this 6mm tooth is a Paranomotodon tooth. It certainly appears to match the others I have and the examples on Elasmo. There is no evidence of any lateral cusps or anything.

Found this odd little thingie while going through some Post Oak Creek gravel... it looks a bit like Groot! hahhahah! Seriosley though. Any clue as to what this might be? Thanks! 1 inch

This is from my most recent trip to Post Oak Creek. I found some pretty nice shark teeth and some other random items. I also found several bones sticking out of the creek bed. It is obviously not fossilized but I wasn't sure if it was a modern cow or something older like a bison. Pictures 17 and 18 show were I excavated it from. It was right on the waterline and probably 10-12 feet down from the top of the river. I am planning on going back to excavate the rest to see if I can find the skull, teeth, etc. Also I have a ton of microfossil matrix I am going through. I have already found numerous other micro shark teeth and other oddities I will be posting soon as well. It is amazing how many fossils you can find in just a little bid of small gravel. Hello all! Sorting through some new Cretaceous Post Oak Creek matrix and have a few questions on what some of these might be. Thanks for any help! First is this round tooth....could it be croc? It doesn't have any striations, which I think croc would, but it is perfectly round so not a worn shark blade, I think. Anyways, any suggestions would be appreciated! 1. Tooth? 5 mm 2. This little piece...may not be identifiable as anything, but the surface texture is just interesting. 2mm other side 3. Possibly a denticle? Or tooth? I've found lots of sawfish teeth but this one doesn't seem to match anything else. 2mm other side 4. is this turtle? 1.5 cm 6, And lastly....this "claw" thingie. . 2 mm Thanks for looking!

Excited to have found this little gem in the Post Oak Creek matrix. Question is.....Claw or Jaw? I have found some crustacean claws and while similar, the oblong indents are making me question. It looks very much like some of the Permian amphibian jaws. But that's really odd. So please, help me out! Jaw or Claw? Thanks for any info!! A couple of crab claws (that I am 99% sure of at least) from the same matrix. Has kind of similar texture, but different color. A Permian Amphibian jaw for comparison:

Hello all! I got some fun Post Oak Creek Matrix and am finding all kinds of odd things!! I am not too familiar with the stuff that comes out of POC aside from the shark teeth and crabby stuff (found a couple of nice claws!) so these things have me wondering what they are! Any help is appreciated! 1.First is this little thing: 4 mm 2. Then this weird thing 6 mm (the backside makes me think denticle but the front.....I don't know) 3. Have found quite a few of these - .I think they are some kind of dermal plates? All are aprox 3 mm 4. Another type of dermal plate? 4 mm 5. Perhaps a worn fragment of a vertebra? 4 mm But it is not the same color or texture as any of the other verts I've found in the matrix; 6 An odd bone bit. It has a concave circle on the small end. Perhaps a tail vert? 5 mm 7. Is this perhaps a plesiosar tooth fragment? 4 mm 8. And finally, not sure what tooth this might be. It's curved, but not rounded. It has ridges unlike a shark tooth blade, but is flat like a shark tooth blade. 6mm

I am a complete noob when it comes to fossil hunting. I recently got into it, along with my oldest daughter, and decided to go to Post Oak Creek in Sherman, TX. In the four hours that we sifted through the creek bed, we were able to find over 95 shark teeth. However, we did end up with a few of these random items as well. I know most are probably geological formations, but I wanted to bring them before some more experienced people to see if any were worth keeping. I can provide better lighting and closer shots of individual items if needed. Thanks in advance for the help!

Didn't find much this time. I don't think it's rained in a while - the water looked stagnant. Also was picked over well. Favorite find is the mostly complete Cretodus (found it under a fallen tree).-

I seem to be having a slow week at work, and didn't have much at home demanding attention, so I decided to spend a day fossil hunting yesterday. I got up with intentions of checking out a new spot on the NSR, but when I looked at weather radar, there were showers in that area. The parts of NSR that I have seen are pretty tough to get into and out of when things are wet, so I changed my mind and made a drive to Post Oak Creek. One trip this spring was the only time I'd been there, and I didn't know what to expect in mid summer, but it is one of the most fossiliferous places I've ever seen, so I was sure a trip there would be fun. And just like my first trip there, I found teeth. I've found very few teeth of any kind in all the other places I've fossil hunted, so I really enjoyed my time crawling on knee pads, looking for teeth. I considered bringing my sifter, but decided I would just stick to searching the sand bars. It was a dark day for the most part, with light rain on and off, so not the best day for trying to spot tiny teeth on the sand bars, but I did find enough to really enjoy myself, and the clouds did help keep the heat from getting too bad. The really small tooth in the upper left corner was the only Ptychodus tooth I found yesterday. Lots of the teeth are broken, damage from tumbling on the rocks, I guess. I always marvel at how sharp many of them are.

I erroneously identified this as a shark centrum, however it doesn't have any foramina on the lateral surface, so it must be a sawfish.-
