Hey all, quick prep question. I’m looking at buying this dremel set with these accessories. I want it for smoothing (removing pen marks) polishing and sharpening the tip of my TT. Would i need to buy anything else to do this or is everything in this set? This is for hard Yorkshire Coast material Thanks

This is my first self prepped find that has come out looking good. I keep practising but i'm quite proud of this ammonite During prep After. It just needs coating and it's finished. The otherside split perfectly by the way so no prep was needed.

Been hunting the NSR now for a few years and this is the first time I've found a bunch of bones in matrix. Was out yesterday with @zoocosmolinaand her husband at a new hunting spot for all of us. We had an absolute blast! I found the following and the bones have a "fishy" look to em. Bones exposed on all 6 sides. I'd love to expose more to try and figure out what may be encased. Any recommendations for someone who has never prepped before? It's about 7 inches long x 4 inches wide x 3.5 inches deep.

Hello! This is my latest project, it’s a triceratops ulna pilled from Wyoming. Preservation isn’t the greatest but still a fun one!

I have been very lucky to have visited and had some mentoring from one of NZ, if not Australasias best fossil preppers. Taking some example from him, I have built a small dedicated prep table. No more smashing stuff on my workshop bench in the dark.. @Waimanu 1 are you still about in the forum? They need to see more of your work! Anyway, I suspect this will be a good year.. An old computer desk that had fallen to bits, and a dish washer that supplied the nice white sides. 3x $7NZD led strips from China and an old computer power supply. I have still to add the main overhead light but this is already 10x better than what I was struggling with.. I was worried when I planned it that the led strips would be overpowering but when you are looking the victim in the middle, you appreciate the lack of shadow.

I am wanting to start preparing some fossils. However, I only want cheap tools, so I'm not really looking for any of the air pens or other expensive tools. Are there any hand tools you would recommend for under £35? Also, I'm looking for somewhere to buy some unprepared fossils I could practice on - any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wanting to move beyond dental picks. Right now I have a dremel I’m think about using for fossil prep but am worried about maintaining control as it tends to pull. The other options I am seeing are air scribes and abrasive blasting. Which is best? Which is the next logical step?

My other current prep is a nice crinoid slab. Here’s what it looked like in the beginning. Large, thin, and VERY cracked.

Are y'all getting tired of GRF fish prep threads yet? Well, too bad here's another one. This Diplomystus is working its way through the rotation on the prep bench. I now have a tall bench with a standard desk height left hand return table for my prep area. The magnifying lens lamp can swivel between the 2. This allows me more flexibility to lean in over a larger piece to prep areas that are hard to reach on the higher bench. Also, this allows me more room to have multiple projects going at the same time. Next step is to build a stand for the blast cabinet on the right hand side of the bench to complete the "U" shape work area. OK, back on topic. Here's how the fishy arrived And here's the fish after 6 hours under the scribe. It has some interesting taphonomy. The Caudal fin is folded over and many of the bones are displaced making for a rather interesting specimen of advanced decay!

Hi all please and thank you, how do I prep Micro Matrix. The seller I purchased this of is not given out any of the trade secrets. A lot of the little jaw a bones I have seen on the net are brown in colour but mine are white. Any ideas in how to archive this. @caldigger @ynot @Ptychodus04 Thank you all for looking

It thought I’d put up a few pics of @Jeffrey P‘s Huntoniatonia not featured in his awesome field trip report. He left it with me (along with a challenging crinoid slab) when we met up last month. Here’s what it looked like upon receipt. Here’s where it currently stands after only 1 hour of scribe work. It probably has 90 minutes worth of work left on it.

Hi All, I picked up a lot of Mazon Creek nodules recently. Tried the freeze/thaw technique and have probably gone through at least 10 or 12 cycles with that. Nothing has popped open but flakes continue to come off of the outside of the nodules. On 1 of the small nodules (1.5 in x .75 inch) enough pieces have flaked off on one end to show what looks like a plant fossil, maybe a fern type plant. Looks like it runs the entire length of the nodule. Is there something else I should try to get this cleaned up or just continue the freeze thaw thing? Thanks Eric

I picked up this jaw recently and would like to have it cleaned up. I’m fairly certain I’d ruin it if I tried anything myself. Anyone have recommendations for a prep guy/gal? Thanks!

I found this lovely calcite ammonite at Saltwick Bay along the Yorkshire coast of the UK a while back. There was no shell remaining from what I can tell, leaving just the calcite formed inside. Not sure if this is common at all?

Can anyone tell me why the B-76 is not dissolving in acetone? Is it supposed to be like this pic below? Alex

A few months back, I spent three days along the Whitby coastline. It was a very good three days of collecting, but my last find of them days, is to this day my best find. I had decided to head to Runswick Bay. My legs and back were exhausted, so decided the short walk to to car park would be fairly light on the legs. Now, in my experience, Runswick hasn’t really produced much in the past for me, so I hadn’t gotten my hopes up too much. So you can imagine my shock, when I see a rather large nodule day there in Situ. I’ll let the pictures say the rest

It’s been a long time since I posted here. So here’s a thanks to everybody that’s helped me out in the past on here. It’s seriously appreciated. So. Here’s a lovely 6 inch Hildoceras I found recently at Kettleness, I’m the Yorkshire coast. She’s a beauty. A few of the outer whorl chambers are a little crush, but it just adds to the piece of think

Quick 18 inch layer prep I just finished. Decided to do this one with a scalpel instead of scribes because some of the fish was pretty flaky and I was afraid that the air from the scribe would blow pieces off even if I was careful with the tip. Being an Amphiplaga I didn't want to risk that. Took about 30 minutes and was a relaxing project.

Here’s another torture prep. This is a little Diplomystus from the ultra hard bottom cap. This one is a bit harder to prep because there’s actually very little matrix on the fossil. So, it’s much easier to accidentally go through it with the scribe. I’m alternating between scribe and abrasive on this one.

So this mesosaurus skeleton has been on the favorite auction site for ages. It looks pretty rough, but after reading all the informative fossil preparation posts on this forum I'm beginning to think this skeleton could look nice with some prep work. The only areas of concern are the big sections of matrix that look filled in (shown outlined in the picture). This was likely done to replace missing sections of matrix. I remember reading a post where someone showed a fossil that had its matrix dyed a brighter color to increase contrast. You can see here with this skeleton the bones are nearly the same color as the matrix making the mesosaurus hard to see. Maybe I could dye the matrix a lighter color to make the Mesosaurus contrast a bit more? Also, what other preparation techniques could I employ to make this fossil look the part? I'm really considering trying this project, so any input anyone can provide would be extremely helpful.

I have recently heard on the internet that some people use dremel tools to prep fossils, particularly cleaning gunk off of echinoids and co. Is it a recommended for Echie prep, or should I use something else?

So I really enjoy prep work so while I was over in Morocco last I picked up some unprepared ones and with the help of a good friend John who sent me over some dolomoite I think it's going not too bad feedback is always welcome positive or negative, the first two are trilobits which was great to get a feel on how prepping this sort of fossil work the second one is a full trilo but was missing a section from where it had been split. Thanks Matt
