Hello Again. Today I would like help with what I think is called a concretion that I found in Llantwit Major, South Wales on the beach on Saturday 16th Sept 23. There is something inside like a Nautilus, I think. I had a go at it with a rotating Dremel and a chisel and hammer, but I scratched the fossil, so I stopped. I have bought a Dremel 290 Engraver that is reciprocating, but I haven't used it yet. I wanted to get some advise first. So if you know what this is, I would love to hear from you. I also nearly broke my back retrieving this, so I want to get in right.

I was prepping this Actinoceras out of limestone, and accidentally must have hit the phragmocone a few times too many when removing the matrix. Is there any way to try to minimize or fix the white scuff marks? I used a PA6-GF33 Dremel Engraver. It wasn't touchless( I know I probably should acquire air tools) so I scratched the specimen. It was almost entirely covered save for a tiny sliver. I put alot of hours into it and would like it to look the best I can. Any advice helps. Its from the Carter's Limestone from Nashville. Found what I am pretty sure is a trilobite hidden in this matrix, but am completely new to fossil prepping. Any advice on how to possibly remove the matrix? Thanks!

Follow Up: Connecticut Fossil Track Help
Masp posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
This is a follow-up from another post of mine regarding some dinosaur tracks I purchased a while back. We decided that that the Eubrontes track is 100% real, but some of the other footprints may be questionable or exaggerated. The stain that was used sort of makes it hard to tell. I’m not the biggest fan of this dark polish, so I was thinking I might want to remove it and apply a much lighter, more subtle polish to correctly identify which are really dino tracks vs. not. The seller told me that it’s a shoe polish that can be removed. My issue is, I’m not sure how to go about it doing it. How do I do this without damaging the specimen ? Will water and a rag potentially damage it? or is there another better way of going about it? Of course in the end event that it’s not removable it’s not the end of the world because it still a very nice piece, but like I said, I would prefer a more professional look, as I’m trying to get a little more serious about my collection. Appreciate the help and thanks- 15 replies
