ID for shark teeth from Purse state park

Hi all, I have a ton of teeth gathered from Purse state park and I’m not sure how to ID. Can anyone please help with these few? Hoping to learn how to do it myself eventually
  2. Hi all, I have probably around 500 shark teeth from Purse in Maryland. I’d really like to try to ID and categorize them, but I can’t seem to find a comprehensive source and a lot of the internet sources don’t have very good pictures. Does anyone know of a good resource to use for this? A book would be great.

  9. Ok, two fossils here. I think the first is a crocodile vert - found in the Aquia formation or Purse/Nanjemoy in Maryland. Is that right? Any suggestions on how to clean it or whether I should? Not sure what the other piece is, but I would guess it is turtle shell. Found in the same general spot. Can someone help with the ID? Thanks, folks!
  10. I’m heading to Purse State Park tomorrow and I want a chance to share the trip with someone. I like to bring back Matrix( the small stuff) to sort through in my down time. I always find a lot of fossils that are under 5mm playing with this stuff. If anyone would like to pick a number from 1-100 I’ll send (I’ll cover the shipping cost) whoever is closest to my number about 5 lbs of thier own matrix to play with. If you want to take a chance, just post your number and I’ll post the number I picked on Wednesday. For anyone that does get in on the fun, thank you in advance!
  11. I made it out to Purse yesterday to get some matrix for another member in need. I started out just a little later than I like due to some pretty heavy traffic. A simple 1 1/2 hour trip ended up being 2 1/2 hours. Once I made it to the beach I found a very low tide and got the feeling that luck was on my side. I went straight to gathering matrix for the member in need and loaded up on a bunch extra for some of my coworkers to enjoy. I decided to change things up from my normal day of hours of sifting and decided to run the matrix and extra equipment back to the truck and just spend the day with my backpack with a few essentials in it. When I returned to the beach I went right and just started looking along the water line. There were a few fossils here and there, but I wasn’t getting the pace that I wanted. I decided to start looking through the mounds of rock that was placed on the beach from the waves. I attacked the mounds for several hours and it ended up my best day out yet. I found plenty of sharks teeth and ray plates, about a dozen reptile teeth, a shark vert, and 2 Turritella molds together in matrix. It was the first shark vert I’ve ever found and first fossils that I’ve found in rock so it was pretty exciting for me!

    Fish teeth?

I find these little black shiny round things at Purse State Park. Some of them a ball shaped, some are elongated, and some of them are kinda squared off and flatter than others. My guess is that they might be fish teeth, but I could be way of here. Any help will help me sleep at night. Thank you in advance.

    Purse State Park

I decided to do a little day trip to Purse state park today. This is the second time I’ve gone there and I took my sifters with me. I managed to find 80 sharks teeth, 200 ray plates, and a few miscellaneous fragments. I was hoping to join the 3” club with a tooth, but I fell way short on that dream. I do believe I joined the 3mm club with one of the ray plates though.

    Is this common in Potomac?

A couple years ago a friend and I decided to hit the road to look for sharks teeth. Calvert cliffs was the one place that kept showing up on google. We live in southern Ohio so we took a chance and drove out to Maryland. Went to Brownies, walked to Calvert, checked flags, the Cabins, Westmoreland with little to no luck. Somehow we came across Purse so we took a chance and went. Found hundreds of small teeth but I found one that was decent. Talked to Hoppe and he identified it as a otodus. Just wondering if it is normal size? Did I get lucky? I plan on revisiting in March. Last year was a bust. Raining and water was choppy. Should of checked the weather. Also quick note. Is their any way of getting access to Cove point or do I have to be a resident? I'll slip someone a couple Andrew Jackson's (Lol)
  15. I spent Wednesday morning (10/5) at Purse State Park for the first time. I was the only one there the entire time. It probably helped that it was on a Wednesday and it was raining sporadically. As soon as I stepped foot on the beach, I found a broken tooth. The water had small rough waves. I put my hand in it and scooped up a handfull of gravel and in the first handfull, I found 3 teeth. It was a pretty fun day.

    Purse 2/25 - So-so finds

Managed to get out last week to Purse to collect the low tide. After talking to a couple of nice game wardens at the lot, I headed down to the river. Turns out I had the place to myself. Conditions were very good and the sun came out after a week of nasty winter weather. My hopes were high! Well, being in no particular hurry, I was able to look at every square inch of beach and every slump pile. But I didn't find a lot, and nothing I found was spectacular. I did collect a few pretty teeth and some bits of bone, but nothing big. Just one of those days. I did share some teeth with a lady and her young kids out collecting for the first time, so that was a plus. My meagre finds looked awesome to them, so I guess it's all about perspective!
  17. Hello there fossil experts! I'm a total newbie and just went on my first fossil hunt --a couple hours at Purse State Park. I found a bunch (like 60!) shark teeth, mostly tiny but i'm still thrilled. But i also found some things that look like fossil shells, and one thing that looks like fossil scales, that i was hoping you could help me ID. The first picture is what looked to me like fossil shells, but are they? are there fossil shells at purse state park? most of the online discussion of finds there seems to be of teeth, rays, and mouth plates and doesn't mention shells so i wasn't sure. They were mostly found about halfway between the water's edge and the cliffs. the things in the second picture (with two large items) were found basically at the water's edge. Are these fossils? if so, what are they? i thought the one on the left sort of looked like underbelly scales. I also found two small mystery objects which are in picture 2, below the tape measure. Any ideas what these are? they are smooth and seem heavy. Thank you so much!

    Purse State Park 3-22-20

I got to Purse a couple hours before low tide and got a good 5 and a half hours of searching. Managed to scrounge together over 1,000 teeth, most of them pretty small, a new personal best. I didn't find anything of significant size, but a handful of oddities/rarities. One such oddity was what looks like a Carcharhinus (Gray/Dusky Shark) of some sort. Perhaps some folks came to Purse following a hunt at Westmoreland or some other place and a tooth slipped out of their bag. This is a first for me. I found a worn down palaeocarcharodon with some nice dark blue coloration, some crocodile teeth, among other things. I found a neat little fossil of some sort that I can't identify, it's about 0.8 mm in diameter. Images: https://imgur.com/gallery/d0qdUxU

    Jaw or Spine

I’d would love some help identifying what this is - I believe it’s a modern fish jaw of some kind but wouldn’t mind being persuaded that it’s a fossil! (Tooth Tap Test was inconclusive- sometimes glass, sometimes plastic) Since it’s likely modern, does anyone know what kind? 4 inches long exactly, about 1/4 inch at the widest point. Smooth on one flat side, a deep groove on the other. Wickedly sharp curvy teeth are part of the bone. Found at Purse on Sunday. -Our Fossil Group has conflicting ideas on this piece; catfish spine, gar jaw, snake mandible, bird spine... -It seems modern but it isn’t definite; there are certain parts that sound very fossilized where some sound very modern when tapped against a tooth. Thanks, FA

    Purse Park MD

Nice day at the park. Found a few interesting pieces. Didn't bother with most the small specimens I saw. Still have not found a tooth that I know the park can produce. Some of the broken ones I have found, tell me they exist. Anyway here's a few pic, a few before I picked them up.
  21. It was a perfect day, but marginal finds. Again found what I think is a crocodile tooth. Please confirm. First pic is on a paper plate so it gives you an idea of the size.
  22. Found a few recently. One would have been nice if complete. I would like opinions on the one partial tooth. I'm thinking maybe croc. Any comments apprieceated.
  23. Tried purse again high tide was coming on so a miserable walk back through the water. Found a few decent teeth nothing big. Most ate dinged up. Any ways I have two I would appreciate assistance on. One is the tooth on my pinkie. The other I photographed each side. Thanks?

    Purse Park trip

So, I went back out to purse park. I really want to try Douglas Point, but don't want to walk a 1.5 mile trail. Not that I'm lazy, but I have some health issues. So this time at purse I went south. Not sure exactly how far, but at least a mile or more. Any ways I found a few items I would like some opinions on. I'm new to fossil hunting so I have much to learn. I did not find a lot of sharks teeth, and have lost the desire to pick up the really small ones. So I found a yellow rock I guess, its just interesting that it looks like some sort of crystalline and very light. Next, I found what I think is a fish vert. I thought it may be modern but has some crystalline on it, and quite hard. Next, I found what is probably a rock, but to me it looks a tiny bit like a squashed button, although probably not. That last thing I found, what I hope is some sort of tooth. It is not all there and it does not look like a shark tooth, but looks like enamel on it. Anyway, appreciate your input.

    Possible whale ear bone

Hello All I found this a few weeks ago i believe bayfront brownies around the bend by the cliffs. Just thrown it in my box of rocks. I was looking through them and figured I should get the opinions of people that are in the know. I put purse in the tag as that's the only other place I've been. Though I am pretty sure it was found at bayfront. I really need to get two separate boxes. Any comments welcome. I googled around and it looks a bit like a whale ear bone.
