Can anyone tell me if this is a spinosaurus quadrate bone? It is apparently from Kem Kem. I think it looks pretty quadratey, just going by a number that I’ve seen in pictures. I JUST purchased/won it, but havent paid yet, so I was hoping I could get opinions ASAP, so I can either pay right away, or discuss cancelling the purchase if it’s not what it’s supposed to be. Normally I would have asked for help on here BEFORE purchasing, but it was a last moment situation, so i barely even had time to think, let alone post on here about it. Any help is greatly appreciated, as always!!! oh yeah, also, what’s that odd thing attached to the side of the upper part, thats even a different color? I’m guessing it’s part of the fossil, just....I don’t even know! I have no idea what would make it so weird and different from the rest.

Have been prepping out a few bits and pieces encased in matrix to see if anything interesting. This is from the Toolebuc formation in Central Queensland Australia. The formation is Albian about 100 million years old. My best guess is this is a skull piece (partial quadrate) the bit the jaw hinges on from a marine reptile. There appears to be three teeth socket points looking at what I assume to be the bottom. The problem with that idea is they are only 5 to 10 mm deep and too close to the hinge point. The specimen is only a partial bone but hoping complete enough for someone to recognise to the general species from photos. Thanks for all feedback in advance. I may need to retake some photos from slightly different angles. Mike

In case anyone's interested, there are two rather nice quadrate skull bones from a Spinosaurus for sale on our favourite auction site. These are definitely quadrate bones from a theropod. And I'm fairly sure they are from Spinosaurus aegyptiacus as well as the morphology is very consistent. Note that the bones are upside down in the photo. It seems it's both a left and right bone. Though I doubt these are associated.

So I bought this piece on the internet... It was advertised as a croc limb from Kem Kem. Except it wasn't a croc limb. Upon closer inspection of the images, I figured this was a theropod quadrate bone instead of a croc limb. So now that it has arrived and I could get a proper look. I've come to the conclusion that I bought a part of a huge Spinosaurid skull. It doesn't look anything like the quadrates of Abelisaurs and Allosauroids, while it does show close similarities with those of Spinosaurids. It's a right-hand quadrate bone that is almost complete with an articulated quadratojugal fragment attached to the side. It's huge and must have come from a skull of well over a metre long. Articulated fossils from Kem Kem are really rare. And better yet, since I bought this as a croc limb, it was only like 60 euros. So needles to say, I'm quite happy with my accuisition. This will be a fun one to clean.
