Can radioactive fossils damage other specimens?
Maniraptora posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
I know next to nothing about radioactivity-- enough to know licking fossils is inadvisable, although I'll admit that wasn't terribly disappointing news. What I'm wondering is whether specimens not radioactive enough to endanger a person are capable of damaging other specimens. Is there a need to segregate displays here, or am I just confused about the mechanics of this? My specific reason for asking is that at the moment I'm planning for my current favorite mineral specimen (which I am babying forever), an almandine garnet from Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, to share a small shelf ar- 17 replies

Hi All, I realize that the topic is not pleasant but "safety first" especially if you want to pass your passion to the next generation, right? We bought a Geiger counter and went over our fossil collection (see video below for the results). I wonder if that is a standard practice among collectors or not so much. I recently read a topic on this forum about somebody finding a pile of bones at Calvert cliffs. Could it be the case? I know I buried my dinobone slab after measuring it. I'm not saying anyone should get rid of the bones in their collection but being aware of the radioactivity lev

Hi, I got a few chunks of dinosaur bones about 10-30cm long and 20-30cm wide. I used a Geiger counter to check for their radioactivity. The readings ranged from 0.28 usv/hr to 1.9 usv/hr. For those with 1.9 usv/hr, should I be concerned about the potential risk to my health if I put them on display in my living room?

I dig around in Devonian black shale quite a bit looking for nice pyrite crystals, etc. Is there a legitimate concern for me regarding radioactivity within that black shale? I ask because I stumbled across an article that mentions the radioactivity content of minerals in black shale. TIA!
