    Real or concrete?

Hi, We are just trying to figure out if this is a real fossil or not. It was given to us by an elderly neighbor with no backstory. Thank you so much for your help!
  2. Hello everyone! I am new to the forum and also a total newbie in fossil with my only experience with fossils as a research internship. I would like to ask if this ammonite fossil that I've purchased is genuine or not (I bought it from a museum - so I'm assuming it's real), but I'll love to learn more from everyone! I have two main questions about my specimen (based on looking at other posts about ammonites): 1. the centre's pattern of my fossil is very clear like it's almost carved out - how can you tell if the centre has been modified? (as I've seen most other specimens being commented as fabricated/carved) 2. what is the white shell-like thing on my specimen? - it seems like other ammonites that aren't polished(which preserves the external ornaments) should be brownish-rock like.
  3. I saw this Pecopteris fossil at a shop and I like it because I dont have plant fossils in my collection. Is this fossil real?
  4. Dear all, I am new in this forum! I want to check if the eggs on picture are real or not? Thanks for response already!! Merlijn
  5. Hi! I bought this trilobite, which i identified as a Phacops- i bought it at a small mine that sold rocks, small gems, and fossils. I bought this [price redacted], but now have begun to doubt its authenticity.
  6. Hi all, Could you experts tell me if this is real? I read that there are a lot of fakes out there, therefor I wanted to ask you for your opinions. Should it be real, then I also wonder if any parts are (visibly) restored? Thanks in advance! Robin
  7. Hello again. I saw this on the internet today, I was wondering if it is real. I've seen similar fossils, but this one looks a little "put together". Let me know what you think!
  8. Hi everyone! My friend want to do a business and he have bought a bunch of trilobite but he wonder is it real or fake. He ask me but I'm not good in trilobite so I hope the forum will have the answer Thanks everyone!
  9. I just bought this megalodon tooth online, and I was wondering if someone could help me out and see if it’s real. My main concern are these notches/dents on the sides of the tooth (close to the root). It kind of makes it seem like it’s been molded. I’m not sure if this is natural or not.

    Real Spinosaurus claw?

Getting much better with recognizing fake Spinosaurus claws, however I'm having a little difficulty with this one. I'm seeing clear bone structure, but am wondering if it's just a carved piece of bone. Any opinions, @Troodon?
  11. Hello all I am looking at this amber and wondering if it is real? The seller says the piece is 12mm x 12mm and is 99 million year old Burmese Amber with 4 insects.
  12. I got this at the Denver gem show and it doesn’t look real I was just checking just in case it is. Help would be appreciated.
  13. I want to buy this Megalodon Shark Tooth, and I want to know if this is real or not. Can someone help me please? Apparently it's real with no restorations done.
  14. I'm looking to buy this Great White Shark Tooth and I just wanna make sure its real. If someone could help me out I would super appreciated it.
  15. Hi people, First of all, I love everything related to fossils and the fact of collecting them. I got these three Trilobite fossils from a reputable seller some time ago and I want to know if they're real or not. They presents cracks on the matrix that extends to the fossil I think. Here are some photos: Fossil 1: Fossil 2: Fossil 3: Thanks for your time and I hope you have a great week!
  16. I want to buy this Megalodon Shark Tooth, and I want to know if this is real or not. Can someone help me please? Apparently it's real with no restorations done. Found while diving approximately 40 miles off the coast of southeastern North Carolina.
  17. Hello! I'm an amateur fossil collector who has recently bought two pieces online. I normally buy at museums or markets but these were a good deal. Wanted to check that these were genuine fossils and not a scam. Fossils came with certificate of authenticity from [seller name redacted] but I know that doesn't mean much. Pterosaur tooth - Tafilalet, Morocco Triceratops bone S.Dakota N. AMERICA Thanks !
  18. Came across this piece on online auction site: [link removed] the seller has stellar reviews and I want to believe it it real, but it really looks like a crocodile jaw. Wanted to get other opinions.
  19. Hello everyone, I've been trying to gather a list of fossils for a wishlist for the upcoming September show in Denver. I've been looking in the fake/real section in the forum and it's seemed to sway my confidence for picking out real vs fake fossils in person. Is there any fossils or regions where fakes are common, or that I should avoid purchasing? Thank you for any help!
  20. Was recently in AZ and went to the 22nd street fossil and gem show. Found an ammonite unlike any other I have ever seen so I decided to grab it. Just curious whether or not it's a real sample or well dressed eye candy fake. Was told it was from Morocco not Madagascar. Any thoughts?
  21. Would like your opinion on a few Spinosaurus claws. They all look fake or heavily reconstructed to me. Have read the Moroccan claws thread, but would still like need an expert opinion. Sorry for the overload of photos. Claw #1
  22. Hello all, I love reading the posts here and the knowledge base is amazing. Question, I came across these two specimens today and they seem really long "tall" and too perfectly straight to be real. They must be at least 4 foot tall. I have enclosed pictures and a close-up of a small section that is broken. Thank you all for the help. D
  23. Hey everyone, I have this specimen and i have serious doubts that it's a classic case of a composed trilobite. Here are the photos :
  24. Can anyone help me assess if this Trilobite fossil is true or fake? I bought it in an estate auction from a home in Hollywood with lots of significant art. I am looking very closely and see no bubbles, or other indicators that this is fake.
  25. Hello everyone, I'm a novice considering an online purchase. In my corner of the world even poor quality fossils are few and far between both online and and in shops, so I haven't had much oppotunity to get a feel for what's genuine or decent quality and could use some advice. The tooth is listed as a Dromaeosaurus from the not very specific location of North africa. I'd of course prefer if the location was properly specified, but because I rarely see anything worth purchasing, I've ended up considering this tooth in spite of that. I'm wondering whether the tooth has been restored (the tip perhaps? The distal serrations?), it also seems quite shiny but that might just be the lighting. Whether the ID is correct, I know teeth from this area are generally poorly described. The tooth is 16mm long and to me the mesial serrations look smaller than the distal ones and the tooth seems to have slight ridges(?) The photos have been provided by the seller, so I apologize if the image quality is too poor to conclude anything. Thank you for reading my post
