I bought a fossil but it is cover with bitumen and I dont like how looks an Ammonite because it lost the natural color. Is there anyway to remove/dissolve the bitumen?

Hello @pachy-pleuro-whatnot-odon I will tag you here again because I have seen in other posts that you have some knowledge about this. In this big mosasaur jaw plate, as they normally do in Oued Zem, it's covered in white glue. I want to try to take out the white glue layer from the bones without touching the matrix. I have started doing it with a scalpel. But obviously is a lot of work, i have seen in another posts the recommendation of using acetone. If i use a cloth with acetone and just use brush the bones carefully will this work? Is there another way? And it's a good idea to remove the glue even if it's just from the bone? Should I try to apply another varnish like paraloid b-72? O I can leave the bone without anything?

Just received a Grallator footprint that has been enhanced with wax, which is a usual practice with these footprints. However, I'm thinking of removing the wax and bringing it back to its original state. Does anyone know how I can remove the wax, without damaging the footprint/matrix?

I have read the bits here and elsewhere about DMSO. I'm not that serious and I'm not sure that's what I'd want anyway. Being new and my first post, I hope it's in the right place. I have some sandstone which was a big clump. Fairly beat up from being in Lake Michigan. I looked and decided to crack it open and see what's inside. Now I have a few pieces and I see some interesting fossils, but they look like the same material, nearly, as the surrounding sandstone. I can only guess that if I try to dissolve the sandstone, I'll probably also dissolve the fossils? These look like shells or outer shells of assorted ancient sea life. With a smaller chunk, I've been putting it into a campfire burner two nights after the fire is going down. I figured heat cracked rocks from archaeology why not try some baked sandstone? Here's a before which hopefully will show what I have. I have some tools, chisels, and a couple of old dental picks. I'm not sure if that's the right way to go. And I wonder if some solvent, over a period of time, sitting out in the garage, might work on the sandstone? Again the acid idea doesn't seem like a good one, whether it's Hydrochloric acid or acetic or something else, the fossils seem like the material is too similar and I'll just end up with a bucket of mush? Anyone with some experience have a starting point to share? Thanks

Hello, I have recently acquired three calymenes from Morocco, one of them was broken (or composited), and glued. To hide the glue, it was covered with mud, and after removing the glue I discovered an awful white glue. I tried to dissolve the glue by leaving the fossil in acetone for a whole day, then I left the it in alcohol for another whole day, and nothing happened. I finally soaked it in hot water but another time nothing happened. Does anyone know how to remove it? Thanks!

I have used this glue a few times before but on one of my finds its came out of the crack can i remove all glue and try again and Will it preserve fossils in the long run?

I just used Acetone to remove a penmark from my Mosasaur jaw. Before After It seems to have worked very well and makes it looks better. Would the same process work for checking for any paint that might have been but on a Keichousaurus without damaging anything?
