Hello! I went fossil hunting with my brother and found a tooth shaped cone! We live in rock county of Luverne Minnesota, about 30 minutes away from Sioux Falls South Dakota. We went to a local river nearby that has a sandy riverbank with lots of different kinds of rocks. We have found a lot of small fossils of shells and some coral-like shapes. I found it near the water where it likely washed up. I assumed it was maybe a coral piece because I don’t know anything about teeth. But Google shows a lot of similar images from both teeth and some coral. I’m just not sure how to go about narrowing down what it is. It has distinct circular rings (like a tree) on the top. The pointy end appears to be broken or chipped. It appears to be just about 3 centimeters long. As much as we both want it to be a cool tooth or something we’re just assuming it’s coral, we really have no idea! Thanks for any help or advice! I can answer more questions and take more pictures if necessary!

Hey all, its been a while since I posted last. Due to the drought, the river is low so I went looking around. I was walking the river bank and stumbled on an area I can't make sense of. In an area about 15 ft across and 4 ft high there are bones and teeth everywhere. It appears as if there are multiple species of animals, but primarily I am finding a lot of what I think are cow jaws. It is located near a small college established in the 1850's. It is also located in an area that had a heavy native american population. I am attaching some photos I took and would like some input on animal type, how old they may be (I know that may be difficult). I am taking the day off tomorrow to really take a good look and do a bit of digging. Any help would be appreciated. I am sure I will post more pictures as I get into this further. Thank you.

This is another fossil (if it even is one) I found in Morocco alongside the Ziz river: https://goo.gl/maps/fKg8FjqDMB3viySu9. It may be bit difficult to make sense of the photos as it's very different from every angle. It has some patterns in there that make me think it might just be a sedimentary rock but at the same time.. I've no idea about any of this! I picked it up because it looked very different than the other rocks around there. Just like I mentioned with my earlier post today: I'd love to know what it is or could be, even if it's nothing special in the fossil world. Thank you! =) Here's a few higher res photos: https://tijsvl.net/_tmp/fossils/post-20200824_152333-large.jpg https://tijsvl.net/_tmp/fossils/post-20200824_152354-large.jpg https://tijsvl.net/_tmp/fossils/post-20200824_152405-large.jpg https://tijsvl.net/_tmp/fossils/post-20200824_152456-large.jpg https://tijsvl.net/_tmp/fossils/post-20200824_152502-large.jpg https://tijsvl.net/_tmp/fossils/post-20200824_152509-large.jpg https://tijsvl.net/_tmp/fossils/post-20200824_152518-large.jpg https://tijsvl.net/_tmp/fossils/post-20200824_152628-large.jpg https://tijsvl.net/_tmp/fossils/post-20200824_152643-large.jpg

Hi all. I’m new to the forum and I have a number of items that I’m hoping you all can help me ID. This one is from the banks of the Meramec River in st. Louis county, missouri. I’d say it’s about 7 cm wide, 7 cm long, and 5 cm tall. It looks somewhat similar to pics I’ve seen of various vertebrae, but I’m not sure. I’ve included pics of it from several angles. Any thoughts?? Thanks!

Sea Shell identification--Could this be a fossilized sea shell?
Joe Salande posted a topic in Fossil ID
I had a question relative to this sea shell. It was found on the bank of the Mississippi river, out of New Orleans. The curiosity of this one is where it was found. just simply on the sand on the river bank where the water level is has gone down. I'm trying to figure out if this could be a sea shell fossil. At this location of the river, it is 100% fresh water, whereas this looks like salt water sea shell. Any thoughts from yawl would be greatly appreciated. Joe Any thoughts from you guys, gals, would be greatly appreciated.- 4 replies
