Hi there, so I came across this rock awhile ago. I found it in the mountains just west of fort Collins, co. I've spent a lot of time trying to find information on it but not having much luck. It's pretty hard, doesn't leave a streak and has weird layers. It's around 2 inches or so and round-ish. Hope the pictures are good enough. If not, I can always take more. Thank you for any info!

Found this formation on the bank of the Dnieper River, Ukraine, Kherson region. Sizes: 73mm length and 32mm width. Composition: the surface layer consists of steatite; the next layer is similar in color to the bone, has many small (less sand) and a little medium-sized pores, a hardness of about 4,5-5, actively foams under the action of hydrochloric acid; the inner layer of blue material has a dense structure similar to flint or chalcedony with impurities, chalcedony does not scratch. Can it be hidrotermal metamorphic fossil, or simply geology formation?

Hi All, My instinct says this one’s a dud. But it was just too unusual not to investigate. Any leads or answers are appreciated, as always. -size is approx 15x20cm -found on the beach -Haida Gwaii (near Alaska) Thank you!

Checking on three more specimens found on Myrtle Beach - I labeled them 4/5/6. I'm very curious about #6. The more I look at it, the more it doesn't look like a bone.

Found on Myrtle Beach. A recent post about a possible bone more likely being molten lava has me wondering about the other "bone" specimens I picked up. Here's the first batch.... Could you weigh in? Photos with and without flash if it helps.

Hi all I just joined up today. I found something that I can not work out. I was walking along a dry creek bed in central Queensland Aus and found what looks like a piece of petrified wood encased in rock. How did this happen? Why didn't it burn up? Any ideas?

This looks like petrified wood to me but I've had no success looking online to see how to determine if my hunch is real or not. I'd appreciate any help or suggestions about whether or not this is petrified wood. (Item is wet in the pictures) Thanks!

Hope I am getting better at posting what I need ID for. Is this a fossil or a rock that just looks like a claw? Most all my rocks came from Mississippi while in MS Gem & Mineral Club hunting in and around Central MS. Some are from the Big Black river beach area, some are from other areas but sorry I can not tell you exactly, been way too many years.

In my continuing adventure in our yard, I decided to scoop up a few tiny rocks today and examine them. This one was not much of a surprise. Am I correct in stating that it is a tiny bit of fenestella bryozoan? (measurements are in mm). Found in Huntsville, AL - I have found lots of fossiliferous limestone in our yard to date. It's the next one that puzzles me most... Thanks!| Ramona

This has been on our bathroom window ledge for some time now. Iam curious to know if this is just a rock or something else. This piece has some odd characteristics such as; linear ridges, pores, indent around one edge that looks like something could have been attached, and a think dark center. I read if you lick a fossil It will slightly stick which it did. We live in North Dakota north of the Missouri river. I like searching for odd or unique rocks along the shore. I can't recall exactly were it was found but can say either from the lake or my yard which is a new development on farm land. I am not a master photographer but hope the images do it justice. I have had this Pry-Axe brand made in Chicago for a few years. It is listed as a Fireman's tool. The only online photo I found has a different handle. So I assume it will be a good rock pick and maybe I can wrap like golf club tape on it? A SOG folding shovel with belt pouch. Has proven well made and handy. The maker of Multi-Tools.

Fossil or just lines on rock?

I was given a rock with a bone through it. It’s about 12 inches across, weighs about 30 to 40 pounds and is a mud colored brown. I would much appreciate any input you guys could give me on it. It was dug up in Franklin County Ohio around Columbus Ohio by a heavy equipment operator. He would dig them up and then give them to me for my yard decorations. The guy who dug them up is retired now. Please use your expertise to educate me on what I have. thank you

I found a nice well-preserved ammonite specimen while on a trip, the only problem is it’s in the middle of massive slab of stone! How do I remove it without utterly destroying it? Is it even worth it to try? Jackhammers are not an option. Is it possible to dissolve the rock using an extremely strong acid?

Hello, I am new to this group. I found this rock while hiking in central Greece. It kind of looks like a paw inbedded in a rock. I picked it up because it's colour was unusual. Could it be a fossil? I have no idea what it is?

I have been studying (ie buying, selling, trading) rocks for a few years now and I received this in a trade. I’ve been wondering what it is ever since but recently I watched Ninja Scroll: The Series and the dragon stone reminded me of this so I went and dug it out and now I’m a bit obsessed and still don’t know what it is after googling fossils for hours. Could it be a fossilized pine cone? My guess is it’s agate but that’s all I can tell. I don’t have any idea where it was found or the origin and have lost contact with the person I got it from. Any ideas you have about it are appreciated.

South Suburban Earth Science Club- Fossil, Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show

This morning I went with my Grandson AJ, on a quick 100 mile round trip to a suburb of Chicago, Chicago Heights, to check out the "South Suburban Earth Science Club- Fossil, Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show"- this is a show that I have never attended before and it was held in the gym at Prairie State College. It is a small show with only about 15 vendors, but it was nice to visit. They had a nice little childrens section and AJ decided that he wanted to select a free plastic spider rather than a small Mazon Creek fern, he also bought a nice little green heart for Grandma, who did not attend. Here are a few pics of the show- Here are some of the items that were for sale- I always like to support the local shows so I always buy a couple things, even when I don't need them. Here are a couple things that I bought. The first piece I bout was from Green River and it cost $12.00. I do not know it the ID is correct and the leaf is not good at all, but I did like the pieces of coprolite. The last thing that I bought were these three pieces of black shale from St. Clair, Pennsylvania that I purchased for $5.00 each. These fossils are Pennsylvanian in age and from the Llewellyn Formation. FRONT- Alethopteris serlli BACK- Neuropteris ovata FRONT- Alethopteris serlli, Neuropteris and Sphenophyllum emergenatum BACK- Alethopteris- FRONT SIDE ONLY- Alethopteris serlli and Neuropteris ovata The vendor that I bought these pieces from allows kids to take one rock or fossil and AJ grabbed an Essexella asherae Jellyfish half from Mazon Creek. All in all it was a fun way to spend an hour on a nice Saturday morning - and thanks to @Bobby Rico for a quick response to a question that I had.

Hello, one of my brothers brought this to me after digging it up in our garden. He believes that it's a dinosaur egg but I'm not sure. We live in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia if that helps.

hi, me and my 10yr old son have recently got into rocks, fossils and beachcombing - him moreso but he cant go on own, so i go with him (it gets me out of the house). The following photos are bits he found at our local rocky beach (parton bay, west cumbria uk). We have no idea if they are fossils or "just rocks" (this is what his older brothers have said they all are!) i am pretty sure that the "white/grey/black" piece is fossilised wood/charcoal (L) and the "clam shell" (P) is not shell material anymore but solid rock.
