    Fossil or just a rock?

I was walking around the other day and found some rock that resembled slate but was full of some black specks. Can someone tell me if the specks were originally mineral deposits or perhaps more organic in origin? There is quite a lot of this rock in the valley I was in.
  3. So these possible eggs (rocks) were acquired from a chinese dealer back in the 70's and somehow came to a local shop to me where they knew nothing about authenticating them. The information I was told is they are from the Hunan Province in China. They were told to have been placed in the matrix base. Measurements: Egg 1- 4"x4" Egg 2- 4"x4" Egg 3- 4.5"x4.5" I even got them CT scanned which you can see the kinda blurry results but i'm curious... Are they real?... If so what kind?

    Found a couple years ago

I found this one of my first trips out to Calvert Cliffs. It doesn’t have any of the characteristics of the other bones that I’ve found, but it’s shape and chipped enamel like appearance has had me questioning it for a good bit now. I feel like it’s a rock that wants to be a fossil and if anyone can give me some closure to this it’s be great.

    Just Found

Can anyone identify this? It was found in Northern Arkansas in the United States. It feels like rock but looks like bone. Has circles similar to what growth rings look like but not for sure.

Fossilized Fruit or What Is This?

Just what the heck is this? At first I thought it was metal and maybe a cannonball or something but I’m no so sure. It’s about 3” diameter and is only slightly magnetic, a strong magnet will attract it if close. Scratching it doesn’t appear to reveal any shiny metal. It really looks like a tomato turned to stone or something. There are tons of very old Indian ruins all around my land, mostly the Zuni and Anasazi. I actually found this just outside of a cliff dwelling half buried in the dirt. My first thought was cannonball since the conquistadors did terrorize the Zuni Indians with heavy artillery around the year 1500. But it dosn’t look like any pictures of cannonballs I’ve seen. this was also a major volcanic region of New Mexico with the last eruptions occurring around 10,000 years ago. Not sure if it’s volcanic in nature.

  10. Is this a fossil or just a poor squished woodlouse?! it looks transparent in some areas that’s what leads me to ask for specialized advice. online ID lists both possibilities. thanks for your help
  11. Hello new to the forum. Great place here thanks for having me. My Daughter found this as she was picking up rocks in a corn field while working. She likes to collect rocks. Its very unusual to me, and google searching didn’t come up with much. The only thing close was a petosky stone? If anyone has an idea we would very interested in hearing about it. Thank tou

    What is this thing?

I found this when I was a kid about 30 years ago. I dug it up in my back yard and I thought it looked really cool and I've always held on to it. Anyone know what it could be? Your help will be much appreciated.

Strange rock from the Lance formation

Hi all, This rock comes from the Lance formation in Weston county, Montana. It's fossil-caliber solid feeling (as opposed to clay-like matrix in this area), but it's obviously not a solid fossil (unless it's a coprolite of mashed up stuff). There seem to be many fossils in it. The only thing recognizable to me is a couple of ceratopsian teeth. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something I should leave intact (such as a coprolite) before I try to dismantle it...lol It's wet in these pics.

Tooth fossil? Or tooth shaped stone?

What about the attached which is about 2.5mm to 3mm from tip to base. Found on a beach in the UK?
  18. Hello all....new to the forum. I have been roaming beaches for years and picking up random objects. Always a fan of the unique and interesting. I was on Holden beach in North Carolina recently doing the normal shark tooth hunt. I came across something I'm not familiar with. At first I was hoping it was a tooth...someone said super croc..except it really wasn't cylindrical enough. Then I moved to maybe a dino tooth of some sort based on the top. Well I have searched all I can, and my best guess is I may have come across a nice piece of coprolite. Thank you in advance for taking a look. I am amazed by all the knowledge here...

    New York Fossils

I am on vacation in SW Vermont.. Last evening, I had dinner with my niece and friend. She has an interest in fossils (I gave her many as presents and she has hunted the Peace River a couple of times.) A while ago, her friend was at a Flea Market and from a cardboard box labeled "New York", he got a number of rocks that contained fossils for her. That is all I know....and I am certainly no expert on fossils in rocks from the Northeast.... 23. Fossil hunting. Found a few bivalves and some suspected trilobite pieces. But the weirdest find was this. Its probably normal but thought I'd ask what it is?
  24. This was found in North Idaho while rockhounding through a creek. It is abnormaly heavy for rock. Can anyone help me identify this? Here are some pictures. Thank you.
