Hi all, I'm heading off to Australia for a few weeks in April and I'm wondering if anyone can give me some pointers around the laws and niceties regarding fossil hunting in that state. I found notes online regarding fossicking licences, and some designated fossicking sites, but what about outside of these areas? Obviously I won't be poking around on private land but any issues around checking out creeks, outcrops etc. on public land/side of the road/along the coast? ...Also any areas worth looking into in more detail wouldn't go unappreciated. Is there a significant difference in regulations regarding fossil collecting on the shores of Lake Texoma and the Red River, depending on which side you are on? Texas vs Oklahoma?

Hi all- I would think this has been answered but after searching I couldn't quite find an answer. I live in Dallas near White Rock Lake. There are a lot of creeks that branch off all through the Dallas area. I like to explore these on occasion (when I just want to get out on a Saturday) and for the most part I've been left alone (and had some success!). Does anyone have any "jurisdiction" over these creeks? I ask because I was exploring one that had houses on each side. OR actually their backyards that led to the house. Anyway, I was no where near someone's property (basically in the middle of the creek and on the sides) but a guy came down and said I wasn't allowed to look through there. I told him I was searching for fossils and he said he didn't care and he would call the cops. I was respectful and left but can homeowners actually do anything? As I stated I was not searching or messing with any homeowner property unless they are legally able to claim the creek. As a fossil hunter, I always want to be respectful but I also know people can be jerks sometimes. thanks for advice! Jeff

Hello! I was wondering if there were any 'unsung' rules that should typically be followed when fossil hunting? Such as don't hammer away at a specimen that you might not take, or only take a certain amount of fossil or whatnot, so that I don't accidentally ruin the hunting experience for the next rockbound that goes to said area. Also if there are any location (aside from private property obviously) that I should avoid/not collect frequently from. -Em

Im heading to Brisbane Australia for the annual Society of Vertebrate Paleontology meeting in October with several Rowan University Professors/Paleontologists and I am trying to research the rules for collecting fossils in Australia. I know we will each need to obtain a fossicking licence but we would greatly appreciate any knowledge on the rules for fossil collecting while we are in Cairns and Brisbane. Thanks in advance -

I'm trying to learn the "rules" of fossils. Such as, if you have one buried deep in rock, is it ok to dig it out yourself, or do you take it to someone to dig it out? What's the best way to store fossils? Is there a general labeling system that people use, or do you use your own? I'm just trying to get a feel for the DOs and DON'Ts of fossils.
