    Hello & Tooth ID

    Hello, I’m looking for help identifying this tooth. We were shark tooth hunting in Florida and found this in the dry sand. It was in an area between a bay and the ocean. It is about 0.75” in length. Any thoughts?
  2. Hello All, I am still fairly new to fossil collecting. I live here in South Florida and have been doing most of my fossil hunting on the Peace River. We have been using a sifter we picked up from Shark Frenzy in Venice Florida, which works great on the beach but less great on the river. I have been seeing awesome sand scoops and modified mud shovels here on the forum. I know lots of people on here seem to modify the items themselves, however that isn't something I have the experience or tools for. Can anyone tell me where I might be able to purchase or have one made?I attached a picture of one we used with a guide on the river, we loved the double handles and the reinforced scoop ,and would love to find something like this or have it made. Thank you all for your time.

    Fossil in reddish sandy stone

    I've been chipping away at this cobble when I have spare time, and slowly exposing this fossil. I found the stone itself in western Illinois, relatively near the rivers. The matrix is shockingly tough, I can only rarely make a difference with any sort of precision, unpowered hand tool. Each grain of sand is firmly in place and does not want to leave. The exposed matrix was originally reddish to brownish, though newly exposed faces of chips broken off lack the red-brown color (the reddish color is entirely lost in the photos). Presumably the stone is Mississippian or Devonian. Other fossils in this rock are all flakey white brachiopod material ranging from 0.5 cm to 4 cm across at the widest points. I have tested some matrix scraps against vinegar, which dissolved the stone around the sand grains, but left the sand grains untouched. I've decided to hold off on any more matrix removal until I know what I should expect to find in the matrix. I found a second one of these, but it chipped off and lost it in my prep area outside. When it comes to the horses & zebras adage I always put more consideration into the zebras than I should, which is why I'm hoping this is some part of a vertebrate but more likely an oddly colored crinoid bit. We just don't have much vertebrate material where I'm at. The photos with circular borders are taken through a stereoscope at 15x magnification. The others have some level of digital zoom applied, but have a scale nearby (mm, cm). I apologize for any focus issues, this new phone has a finicky camera.

    Possible fulgurite?

    Could this be a fulgurite? It does not appear to be magnetic, so I hesitate to think that it’s man made.
  5. This was found in dry wash, in Cocconino county Arizona. I was walking up dry wash looking for petrified wood. I thought this was just a nice black piece of petrified wood. It was in loose sand in the middle of a deep wash. They were 10-20 foot walls with a 20 foot wash base. When I got back to truck, I notice it was a lot smoother then the other pieces of petrified wood that I saw that day. The tooth had longitudinal grooves and lines that looks like worm trails. The yellow marks wouldn't wash out of the worm grooves. It also looks like three teeth connected together with fault cracks running thought it. I did try to get help identifying this tooth from Arizona museum of Natural History, who told me to next contact Arizona State University. I haven't goten any response. I have pictures of petrified wood found near this tooth. I can attach them later if that will help. If there is any other information needed let me know. Rocky Jeep

    Fossil? Bone? SpongeBob?

    I found this in the sand dug up from at maybe 10 meters deep (idk metric I'm trying though, it was deep enough to fit a huge track ho into with excavator arm folded) in Collenton(spelling may be off, they do it weird here) County South Carolina. I do not have a clue what it is, it was difficult taking the pictures because it was split when I found it, in sand that was unearthed at a depth of maybe 7 to 10 meters I'm guessing.

    saskatchwean corals? 2/3

    2/3 found these on shore of Lake Diefenbaker in Saskatchewan, Canada. looked to be eroded from sandy deposits with layers of harder iron-rich rusty strata. the fossils themselves are heavy, mineralized with iron and then rusted? corals? all the same type or different? i think this is in cretaceous age but not sure. see other 2 posts these specimens are larger, very heavy. like solid iron, looks like outer textured surface mineralized and inner cavity separate - looks like central tubular structure did not mineralized (still sandy) in one pic (could scrape out with toothpick)

    3/3 found these on shore of Lake Diefenbaker in Saskatchewan, Canada. looked to be eroded from sandy deposits with layers of harder iron-rich rusty strata. the fossils themselves are heavy, mineralized with iron and then rusted? corals? all the same type or different? i think this is in cretaceous age but not sure. see other 2 posts these samples are really interesting, found in situ, on exposed section of eroding sandy beach cliff - see photos, sand with layers of iron rich strata but these bubble textured rusty iron “tubes” all over, connected and running for long distances verticle and horizontal (car key for scale)- i thought maybe looked like root suckers or corals or burrows (photos 1-3) very interesting bubble-texture and hollow ~ 1cm diameter (photos 4-9)

Siegburgite is referred to as an "accessory resin", but is considered a true amber. It occurs alongside several other accessory resin species, as well as the more well-known Bitterfeld amber. Siegburgite is a fascinating amber, and is one of the few fossil resins classified as a Class III resin; it is essentially a natural polystyrene, found as concretions where it is a binding agent to fine sand and mica: the sand is often evenly distributed, and is variable in proportion to the resin, occasionally more than 60%. Siegburgite is highly flammable. Siegburgite was produced by a plant of the genus Liquidambar (Hamamelidaceae Family, also commonly known as the "witch-hazel" family): within the fresh resin, known as storax or copalm balsam, cinnamic acid and esters quickly decarboxylate (chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group, and releases carbon dioxide), forming styrene; upon its burial, the newly-formed styrene underwent polymerization over tens of millions of years, as it became polystyrene. It is found in the lignite (German: "Braunkohle"), lignite-sand, and lignite-clay layers of the upper portion of the Cottbus Formation; Bitterfeld amber is also found within this Formation. Rather than displaying my eggs in a bog standard display case, I have a vague idea to display them on a bed of sand/matrix/gravel --- either looking like they are just being excavated or arranged almost like a small nest with a few plastic plants and things to make it look a bit like a nest site. But would the sand eventually damage/wear away the fossils over time? If not, would wrapping the lower half (in contact with the matrix) in some thin, clear plastic be enough protection while they sit in the sand/matrix? Think it'd make for an interesting looking fossil display, if I can get it looking right.

As the winter this year is not very harsh, on Saturday I ventured to a location quite close to my home - I learned about it during the last fossil fair It's a sand pit - well, sort of, as it extracts sand from the bottom of the Vistula River - and according to the fossil seller who told me about it, it is the place where one can find Pleistocene fossils. We were warned to stay clear of the pipes, because of falling stones, but we were allowed to browse the piles of whatever was filtered out from the sand
  19. So, I've been hunting sharks teeth on and off in South Alabama since a young child. Since my two kids have gotten self sufficient, me and the wife have been taking alot of trips to the river to look for teeth. Finding the normal small teeth, for our area, got me to wondering if there were bigger teeth in our area. That led me to some late nights of researching the ins and outs of my area. The area we are close to has alot of Eocene era fossils and I quickly learned the Carcharocles auriculatus was THE SHARK during this time period. So, my goal became to find a complete tooth in my little honey hole. We would spend weekend after weekend at the river with the kids. My 8yo and 3yo right there with us digging and sifting! Both who want nothing more than to become paleontologist when they get older and sit there picking out ray plates, vertebrae, and teeth with excitement growing every time they see something in the sifter. Over the past several weeks, we have dug 100s of teeth and many other cool fossils which I have added to our collection but just chips of the elusive Carcharocles auriculatus teeth were all we were finding. Last night while at church, I was talking with a family about our finds thus far. You could see their kid's eyes lighting up with curiosity and they asked if we could take them sometime. We had originally planned on taking time to do some house stuff but I could tell their kids really wanted to go. We made a plan to meet this morning before the rain. We made the long hike to the hunting grounds and began to dig and sift. One after the other, the kids and their parents were yelling with excitement finding their first teeth! I was digging around getting dirt for them to sift when I felt that unmistakable sound of hitting something solid. I cleaned around the area and I saw a serrated edged tooth. Surely not...not a complete tooth. I carefully cleaned around the area to make sure not to damage it. I couldn't believe my eyes. A full tooth! I began to shake a little with excitement. I pulled it from the earth and showed everyone. This only pumped them up even more. Although this tooth is rare for our area, we kept digging with no luck of finding another one. The rain began to come in so we cut the trip short but I've babied this thing around all day, picking it up to make sure it is real and I wasn't dreaming. I know it's no 4" tooth but for me, it may as well be. It's become an infatuation for me and the family, so much so I have been looking at planning a family vacation around fossil hunting. My 8yo has expressed alot of interest in finding a megalodon tooth. So, if you guys and gals know of a good place I can take the family to do something like this please share!     Unknown Find from San Pedro California

    A member of my monthly bug chat group is trying to figure out what this might be and I offered to post it here to get some ideas. It was dug from a hillside in San Pedro, where clams and crabs were also found. My best guess is the formation is Pleistocene Palos Verdes Sand. They have shown it to the ichthyology sections of the LA County Natural History Museum and seem to have ruled out it came from a fish. My best guess is maybe some sort of coprolite? However, its huge and I also wouldn't rule out some sort of human made artifact.
  21. Hello, I have a bit of an odd piece, it's not a fossil, it's a scorpion! The scorpion was in its burrow in a dune when the dune collapsed, I would like to stabalize the sand, so that I can display it. This isn't a particularly important find, so I wouldn't mind if it broke in the process. Keep in mind, I have very limited materials.
  22. Found this while digging in my backyard in Southern California. More specifically, Cerritos, which is just a few miles north east of Long Beach. I uncovered a whole layer of interesting rocks, a huge chunk of breccia, shale, sandstone, and even a ~2 in. long quartz, but this one actually looks like a coral to me. I can add close ups if necessary.

    Tube-like objects found on CA beach

    Hi all! I’m hoping to solve a mystery. I find these objects pretty regularly along the San Mateo coast of Northern California. I’m not even sure they’re fossils, but the bluffs above the beach are part of the Purisima Formation with plenty of fossils from the late Miocene to early Pleistocene so I thought it would be worth a try. They look to be made of compacted sand, like a concrete, but laid down in layers, with a more robust top with lines that have some shell-like material. Most pieces I found have this triangular shape that look like they might have formed tubes. All the pieces I’ve found look like they would have a similar diameter. I’ve never found any smaller. They’re pretty uniform. And common. Since I first noticed them a couple of months ago I find them every time I’m on the beach. They could be the result of a geologic process, but I’ve asked every beachcomber, zoologist, and marine biologist I can can find and no one can tell me what they are.
