    Help ID

I was about to throw out a broken 2 inch shell when I noticed a dark object lodged inside. It is about 1/2 inch square. dark black/brown, opaque and hard. I had hoped it was amber but too hard. Won't scratch with a dental pick and sinks in salted water. Shell came from piles to be used to pave parking lot @ Bradenton Beach, FL (See Bradenton beach Fossil shells) I am reasonably certain that there is no mixing of any recent material. Have any SMR Pinecrest collectors ever seen this material? Any help in ID or other steps I could take to identify it would be appreciated. will attach pictures. Thanks
  2. So here are all of our finds from yesterday, I'm still cleaning and sorting them but If there is something you recognize let me know.. even if it's just one thing I should toss

Can anyone tell me what this is?

Does anyone know what this is? We found it at a abandoned construction site.. it had some sharks teeth inside.. its 7in x 3 in at its widest point. Thanks ! I'm almost thinking it looks like a huge phosphate module? I really have no clue.
  4. I never knew that Florida had such a plethora of fossil hunting opportunities. I have visited Venice Beach twice and found fossil shark teeth, fossil plant (most likely Crinoidea) impressions in rock, and fossil shells. I have wanted to visit the Peace River formation for a while now, and I know that there are other spots in Florida that seem to hold some promise. So I'm curious, since I'm basically just starting out hunting for fossils myself rather than buying them, as to what some people who also fossil hunt in Florida have found, and where you found it?

shark teeth- one old, one new

Hi guys, I am hoping someone can ID at least one of these! I posted the larger one in a group the other day but I figured I might have better luck with these pics! If someone can ID either of these I would appreciate it! Thanks!
  6. A few things in this rock.. any ideas? Thanks
  7. Jonelle

    What is this ?

Any ideas on this rock? is it s rock?
  8. I know if probably gets annoying but I have so much and know so little I have moved from the shells because I have great reference points now. So to the rocks.. (rock 1) this one is about 2 feet long and there seems to be a couple of things going on here, but I'm not quite sure what. I'm not sure if that inprint is anything but a hole.. I can not tell (Rock 2) I'm pretty sure I see a couple of prints in this one but I am not sure what they are , imprint is about 4 inches top to bottom. Thanks
  9. So I'm still cleaning up this coral.. it's taking a while with a chisel and nail tools! I'm hoping there is some kind of crystallization in the coral but I have no idea where to go from here.. also, I'm thinking it might be oculina sarasotana? Any thoughts on this one? I can't really find much similar when I search.. I know I posted it before but I'm hoping maybe it looks a little clearer now.. there are a couple of holes in the coral I'm wondering if that is where I should cut? Maybe in the back? It's still a little sandy, but this is one solid chunk otherwise...the coral is also on the back.
  10. Jonelle

    Concretion guesses?

I'm going to try to clean this off again tomorrow.. anyone have a guess? It's about 3.5cm

    Bone

Another find from my yard, this one in a pile of other fragments that look like bone, inhavent had a chance to wash them yet. I found a huge pile that was next to my shell mound "driveway" there were also some crude looking points mixed in with the pile... wish an archeologist would pay attention to me already! It's about 15cm long.. that's a rough guess since the measurer keeps getting moved.
  12. Holy moly guys. The saga of my historical yard continues... is this man made or a fossil? Had other great finds today, I think this one needs a post all of its own.
  13. Jonelle

    Some interesting finds today

Totally fascinated by these little guys!

    Overwhelmed!!!!

I have to write this because I'm hoping someone can help guide me on where to even start. I have looked over the pinned posts on the top of this forum but I feel like my question is a little different. In all my gardening and digging I have started to find too many (whati believe may be) fossils. I've also realized that a lot of the limestone we have collected from the ground here actually might contain fossils. To be clear I am not actually expecting someone to ID all of these photos, I just want to know where to even start?? I am not a paleontologist nor was I even interested in it until I started finding all of these. I am a work from home mom with a toddler and I really don't have time to learn everything there is to know! I can handle the smaller things like the shells and barnicles, but these giant rocks have me overwhelmed. Someone come help me! I don't even know what some of these rocks are... some of them were covered with the blue clay... these rocks were about a foot underground.. Location is Sarasota, FL. I'm going to put a couple of links to some of the photos because there are too many to post. Any guidance is appreciated! The photo included is to show you just some of the pieces lined up ... some close up pictures are in the links. https://imgur.com/a/pMei6 https://imgur.com/a/IIQeC *edited to say that I am not able to bring these anywhere because they are huge. Also, I have tried contacting a few people at local universities but without luck. I have become sort of obsessed with even just the little fossils and my worklife has begun to suffer... I feel like I need to do something with these...if there is nothing of note here I want to just be able to know... these photos don't even begin to cover the shells. If anyone lives nearby and wants to come help!! Please. Sorry if there are duplicate photos I was just trying to do this quickly

    another one

Okay so I've looked on some good resources but I always seem to hit an information overload... anyone know this one? Type-time period- etc! Thanks so much!

    SMR April 15th

Good news and bad news. Bad news 1st My back is killing me -- lugging buckets of shells up and down hills was a mistake; I did not find the extra large colorful shark teeth like the 2.5 inch GW or 1.75 inch Hemis; and most important . this will be my last trip to SMR.. The company which runs the Aggragate business is shutting down, turning fantastic shell pits into lakes around multi million $$$ homes.. RATS !!! Now the good. I got to spend a great day in one of my favorite places. and I met MikeR (and his lovely wife) at the pig roast barbecue Saturday night. We bid on adjacent items in the Silent Auction -- I won some display boxes, but Mike won about 300 copies of a Paleontology Monthly Publication... We talked about finds , and locations, and many things fossil -- enjoyed both the food, the conversation and just 1 Bud light because I still had to drive home. Posting some photos taken after 1st rinse. A lot of nice shells but most are pretty common one that I have found before (Cowries, Spiney & leafy Jewel boxes, Vase shells, etc. A shell almost a match for a Scotch Bonnet; I'll have to find the fossil name on the net;.. Even found a broken Junonia recognize by the tip and many scallop doubles. Trivia Lindae (Petuch 1994) Sconsia Hodgii (Conrad 1881) Enjoy, I did while finding them. By the way an SMR hunting trip was just 3 hours, sometime slightly more. By the end , my spirit is willing -- there are tons of shells out there, but after 3 hours in the pit, the flesh is weak...
  17. Hello! I've been looking for shark teeth and fossils for a couple months now with a couple of friends and we've been to Caspersen Beach, Manasota beach, and Peace River. My boyfriend and I were thinking about going somewhere new for a weekend but we don't know where to go. We live in Bradenton, Florida so we would like to go somewhere close by. We don't mind driving a couple hours though. Thanks!
  18. Hello Florida Fossilers, I am a Minnesotan, born and raised. I have an opportunity to come visit the great state of Florida and I plan on fossil hunting while I am there. I have never been, but have heard it is a fun and exciting way to spend a day or two. I will be staying in Sarasota and was hoping for some tips on both the techniques that are successful and the locations that are fruitful. I have done some reading and have heard a lot about the Peace River. From what I've found, I believe this to be a common location. I was hoping to go somewhere off the beaten path. I have a 5-year-old son and would love to bring him back something impressive. I also have a friend who is a vertebrate biologist at a college up here in Minnesota. I would like to impress him with a tale of my hunt and my findings. Thanks for your help, Jonah Beers

    Unidentified Murex From Sarasota County

I found this guy a couple of years ago when I was living in Sarasota. If I remember correctly, it came from a construction area that used the shells for a temporary road near New College of Florida. They came from a quarry in the area, but not necessarily the county, so the age and location are not well known. Possibly Tamiami Formation or Caloosahatchee Formation? I'm guessing Pliocene? I'm no expert on shells, but it looks like a murex to me. You'll also notice in the pictures there is a hole, perhaps from a boring worm, as well as a small colony of vermicularia recta. This is one of my favorite fossil shells so if any of you guys could help me out with an id that would be great. -Vann
