Fossil hunting trip at Achanarras quarry, Caithness, Scotland
James_R_V posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Last week I went upto Caithness hunting for fossil fish at Achanarras quarry. The rocks there formed at the bottom of a huge lake during the Devonian period 385 mya. Most of the fossils I found were incomplete with mostly the tails missing, but I was lucky enough to find a complete diplacanthus, and fragmented cheiracanthus murchinsoni, which I have managed to superglue back together.- 17 replies

I went fossil hunting at Tillywhandland quarry on Turin hill, Scotland today and found a complete Mesacanthus mitchelli fossil. It is probably the best one I have found yet. Both the head and tail are present. The head is so well preserved you can see both the gill rakers and eye socket. -
It has been a while I have posted anything on here so I thought I would share a couple of fossils I found over the past few months. The first fossil is one I found before lockdown at Achanarras quarry in Caithness. It is a complete Diplacanthus crassisimus fossil. It is species I have never found before.

Help needed for preparing fish fossils from Caithness.
James_R_V posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
Hi everyone, Have been fossil hunting at Achanarras quarry and I have found what I am sure is an complete Dipterus valenciennesi. The only problem is that it is covered in a thin layer of hard stone. I am just wondering if anyone has had any experience with preparing Caithness fish fossils and know what tools are best for the job? -

I have been doing some more fossil hunting at Tillywhandland quarry and I have found a couple of nice fish fossils including a complete Mesacanthus mitchelli fossil. The fish has folded over it's self so it's head is pointing towards it's tail. -

I have been fossil hunting at Tillywhandland quarry near Forfar Scotland over past few months and found quite a few fossils that I thought I would share. The first fossil is an Ishnacanthus gracillis fossil, which I have just finished prepping tonight. It is pretty much complete apart from the very tip of the tail.- 20 replies

First trip to Achanarras quarry, Caithness, Scotland
James_R_V posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Last weekend I went on my first fossil hunting trip at Achanarras quarry. I spent a 3 days searching there in the hope of finding few of the famous fossil fish that can be found there. Achanarras quarry for anyone who doesn't know it is the most famous Devonian fish fossil sites in Scotland. The rocks there formed at the bottom of tropical lake 385 million years ago and have produced fossils of over 15 different species of mid Devonian fish. Anyway, after 3 days of searching I managed to find fossils of 4 species of fish, which is not bad for first trip to a new site. The main species I was after was the primitive lungfish known as Dipterus v and I found quite a few. Most of the Dipterus v. fossils I found were incomplete apart this fossil below. This was the most complete fossil I found.- 25 replies

I went fossil hunting at Tillywhandland quarry this evening in the search for more Acanthodian fossils. I split dozens of stones finding nothing until I came across what must be the smallest mesacanthus mitchelli that has ever been found. It is so small it could have fit onto a 5p coin. For anyone who has never been to Tillywhandland quarry, it is quarry located on Turin hill near Forfar, Scotland. It famous for producing early Devonian fish and eurypterid fossils. The rocks there formed at bottom of volcanic lake about 405-410 million years ago.

I have been fossil at Tillywhandland quarry near Forfar and have found quite a few Acanthodian fossils, which I thought would share everyone. I could also do with some help identifying species of some of the fossils. I know the first four fossils are Mesacanthus mitchelli, but the rest I am not too sure about.
