Are there any Santa Margarita fm fossil sites that are still open/able to be collected from in and around the SF Bay Area? I want to try and hunt from the formation but all the classic sites, like bean creek, are now closed for collecting.

Tonight, I was trying to pull up directions for a friend to the wonderful astrodapsis collection site in scotts valley...seems that this site has been posted with no trespassing signs...as indicated by a few posts i've seen online..if this is indeed true...its a loss of a valuable site...its an area that was collector friendly for kids and beginners...it was a wonderful spot that started many collections..I will miss this spot.

Found in Scotts Valley, CA many years ago, I came across this piece. It was covered in Sandstone which I laboriously brushed and picked at for a few days. The pointy areas are sharp and brownish in color, symmetrical and extremely hard to pick at. Also the middle is brown, and the underside has a strange texture... It feels and sounds somewhat like porcelain. after brushing and picking the sides and the bottom you can see a thin brown (yet small) hard piece jutting out. My amateur instincts think it looks like a track of some sort, but hey I really won't be surprised if it turns out to be a concretion! Thanks for any ideas you can share... Also should I separate the top from the bottom? Roberta

Strange fossil - this fossil has it all.... white solid bone (lick test>?), hardened brown non-rock like material (told possible brain encasing?), all encased in sandstone, hardened sand, and brownish marrow like substance. When I first came across this (along with many other from Scotts Valley, CA - approx. 40-50 years ago found by my father in a ravine) Ive been attempting to uncover it (it was a large blank piece of sandstone). probably not the smartest thing to do but this one came easy (or shall I say easier) that the many others. I have several more pics if interested, but could only send these per page.

My father was a fossil hunter and left me the bulk of them. He and a friend, who owned the property where they were found, collected over the years (50 years or so) - I went with them twice when I was young. The identification logs were not found - I believe they were destroyed in a flood. I've cleaned a few of them by brushing and picking from recall of his work.. This is just one of many, I will send two more picks that may help. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide me. download.html

Thank you to everyone who responded t my "sea Lion" id. I'm attaching pictures of large piece that was found in the same crate of what I thought was a sea lion - the brown coloring is the same... I have several other pieces but just sending the larger ones as to not take up your time. Thank you I am sending more pictures from different angles
