  1. Extremely skeptical of this piece. No information from seller available other than a “seahorse” label that has since been torn off. Looks super fake to me and the research I was able to comb through on my own makes me even more suspicious, but my fossil journey has only just begun and figured I’d leave the collection purging to the experts. Not sure if entirely fake or simply heavily doctored.

    Real fossil seahorse?

Hello all, I am considering buying this specimen but I know that fossil seahorses are often conflated with fossil pipe fish, which are more common and less valuable. Can anyone weigh in on the authenticity of this identification and whether or not the specimen appears to have been altered? Thanks!

    Seahorse imprint

I found this on the beach is it a seahorse? And is it rare
  4. Greetings! I am not an experienced fossil collector and have no practical knowledge of the hobby. However, I am hoping someone can offer their opinions on what I have here. I believe it to be a Seahorse but cannot be certain. I confess total ignorance to the proper terminology to use here and apologize for any errors in advance. I found this rock on the shores of the Arctic Ocean in the town of Barrow, Alaska in the summer/fall of 2014. I lived and worked in Barrow that year and would spend my spare time walking the shores of the Arctic Ocean near my home. I found lots of bones and other interesting items during my walks. I spotted this rock on the shore and picked it up. It appeared to be a fossilized seahorse in the rock but that does not make sense as the seahorse is a tropical creature as I understand it and the Arctic Ocean in nothing even remotely similar to tropical. I assume that migrating whales could have transported the seahorse and deposited it in the Arctic Ocean. Please see the attached pictures. I have several other pictures but am limited to the max size of 3.95MB. I would appreciate any insights as to what exactly it is that I have here. Any information you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Fake Giant Seahorse Fossil

Is This a Giant Seahorse Fossil? Alex Kasp, Snopes, September 15, 2017 http://www.snopes.com/giant-fossil-seahorse/ http://www.snopes.com/category/facts/photos/ Also, it seems implausible that a person would find such a fossils on a corestone. A paper about real fossil seahorse can found in: Teske, P.R. and Beheregaray, L.B., 2009. Evolution of seahorses' upright posture was linked to Oligocene expansion of seagrass habitats. Biology letters, p.rsbl20090152. (Open Access) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2781918/ Yours, Paul H.

    Hippocampus guttulatus Cuvier, 1829

The seahorses from Fiume Marecchia were determined by L. Sorbini as Hippocampus ramulosus Leach, 1814, a recent species. H. ramulosus is according to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) a synonym of H. guttulatus Cuvier, 1829. References: SORBINI, Lorenzo (1987) BIOGEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATOLOGY OF PLIOCENE AND MESSINIAN FOSSIL FISH OF EASTERN-CENTRAL ITALY. Boll. Mus. Civ. St. Nat. Verona", 14, pp. 1-85

  10. Hi Folks, i am looking to find out what i have here. i have trawled the net with no avail. i kow very little fo this piece except i accrued it around 20years ago when an elderly relative passed away and it has RIO stamped on the base. I know its a sea horse but whether it be fossil, exoskeleton etc is what im trying to find out. my end goal will be to sell this along with my fossil, mineral and gem collection. Im new to this forum (any fossil forum for that matter) and joined as a reference/information source. i will more than likely have more questions coming up so if i can return anything to you all, please let me know and ill do my best. So, back to the horsey.............................anyone?
