    Wyoming Amber in Matrix (Hanna Fm., ~57-56 Ma)

    Specimen: 9.0g / 43x28x12mm Collected June 15, 2022 "Glory Hole" Site Hanna Basin Carbon County, WY Hanna Formation (~57-56 Ma) Deposit: *While amber is found throughout the Hanna Basin, only one site is known to yield large pieces of clear, stable amber: the locality known as "Glory Hole" is located within the north-central section of the Hanna Basin, in south-central Wyoming; exposures are positioned about 8,500 ft. above the base of the Hanna Fm., and at an elevation of roughly 8,900 ft. above sea level. Extensive layers of lignite and carbonaceous (lignitic) mudstone host abundant plant fossils and amber; the matrix is fissile (easily separated into thin layers) and friable (crumbly). Physical weathering (freeze-thaw, wind erosion, thermal expansion, etc.) of the exposures has created an expansive area of disintegrated substrate. This particular site was once a watery paleoenvironment, characterized by shallow swamps. At the very top of the bluff are layers of fissile, light-colored shale referred to as the "Upper Lacustrine Unit" of the Hanna Fm. Amber: *Occurring as small droplets, runs, and globular masses, much of the amber is transparent and of a reddish-orange color throughout, with some containing plentiful internal fractures. The intact, non-fractured amber is very hard, measuring 2.5-3.0 on the Mohs scale, being generally harder than Dominican and Chiapas ambers. It is very fragile and fractures easily, but takes a high, glassy polish like Myanmar amber. Through PyGC-MS, the amber is shown to come from a cupressaceous source tree, and is extremely similar chemically to cretaceous amber from the Raritan Fm. in New Jersey. Of several hundreds of pieces collected by some of the authors, et al., of the cited publication, prepared, and studied at the American Museum of Natural History, only one contained a single insect inclusion: a wingless thrips (1.1mm) that was heavily-compressed and deformed due to geologic forces. From my time at the site, I observed that much of the in-situ amber, especially large pieces, was concentrated within a short horizon only a couple feet in depth. It was especially common near buried, coalified remains of branches and logs, and matrix layers containing numerous leaf remains (mostly cupressaceous). Additionally, I've noticed that some of this material is fairly phosphorescent when exposed to longwave UV light. Minerals and Fossils: While collecting at the site, I noticed several other interesting features besides the amber I sought: carbonized leaves were present in some of the separated matrix layers, petrified wood was present in-situ and eroded from the matrix, and transparent gypsum crystals (some being relatively large) were commonly exposed along the site's surface. Also found in-situ were coalified twigs, branches, logs, and even stumps; I had partially uncovered a few such logs in my shallow excavations (6-12" deep) for amber. I observed a few stumps (~15" diameter) still preserved in an upright position, perpendicular to the matrix layers, with the majority of the lignitic remains buried beneath the surface. Recovered from coarse-grained sandstone originating from above the lignite deposits, was a partial angiosperm leaf imprint with distinct veins. Significance of Hanna Basin Deposits: *Throughout the Hanna Basin, amber is found in various quantities, physical conditions, sizes, and ages: the age range of the ambers' host strata sequence ranges from Late Cretaceous to Late Paleocene (76-56 Ma), an unprecedented range among all the world's known amber deposits. A stratigraphic interval more than 5 miles thick separates the highest and lowest occurrences of amber within the Hanna Basin. Paleocene amber is very rare, with only a handful of significant deposits in the world, notably from the Paris Basin and 5 localities in Switzerland.   11. Hey there Fossil ID. Reddit couldn't do anything for me so I came here for a chance of getting this fossils ID'd! Here are the main informations I can give you about it: It was found on a roadside shale cliff in Château-Richer, just north of Québec City (Province Of Québec, Canada); According to Québec Government geological maps, the specimen was found in the Upper Ordovician Lotbinière Formation of the Sainte-Rosalie Group (just on top of the Utica shale); Two trilobites and several (dozens and dozens) of graptoliths were found around it; There is a graptolith overlying the main animal/plant I would like to ID, if you look well (reverse "V" shape); The fossil is preserved as some kind of carbon layer, just like graptoliths normally preserve; The specimen is roughly 4 cm long, if you compare it to my (dirty) thumb. Any hint will be greatly appreciated, thank you very much!

    How to prep coral colony?

    I would greatly appreciate any advice on how to clean/prep this coral colony. It was found in a shale pit in northern Iowa-from the Lime Creek formation. As you can see, there’s quite a bit still clinging to it. Is it safe to clean with some water and a toothbrush? The underside seems to have crystallized(?). Very new to fossil collecting and subsequent preparation. Thank you in advance! If anyone has a guess at ID please let me know as well.

    Alabama Graptolites

    Here are some of the fossils I acquired in a shale roadcut I was told about thanks to @prem. These are ordovician in age, and I have to say it was difficult to collect them due to the fragility of the surrounding material. Ive identified most of my finds, however there were these unusual pill like outlines I wasn't familar with.
  14. I was able to take another trip to the Leighton Formation today! It's been a while since I've been able to visit (months and months), but I've finally been able to. Unfortunately, during the winter the place is completely covered in snow and ice. Not really the best collecting conditions... My last trip there was in August of last year, and the spring has been very busy. Today it was time. It was supposed to be overcast with a chance of rain, but it came out sunny and bright. Absolutely beautiful day out. The collecting was very good. I unfortunately forgot to take a picture of the site. I was working in the same spot as last time, and at another outcrop a little farther down the shoreline. Place hasn't changed much, still as minuscule and weathered as ever. I had a better idea where to look though. Last time, I collected a lot, but I was mainly working in layers where the fossils were very evident. These layers contained a plethora of brachiopods, ostracods, tentaculites and other invertebrates - plus my first conodont. This time, though, I was going to try something a little different. The layers between the extremely fossiliferous layers had finer sediments, and generally seemed to keep the specimens intact better. I chose to mainly work in what I now call the "Chonetes layer". It's the only layer in these outcrops that contain Chonetes bastini brachiopods. The layer doesn't shatter as much as the other shale, so the pieces come out without a lot of cracking. It was also the same place that I found a nice trilo-bit, and I was hoping it would pay off. It did... The best finds of the day went to the trilobite cephalons. I found two Acaste cf. zerinae sp. - mostly intact, but an eye cracked off on the first, and both on the second. I was (luckily) able to find them, and I intend to glue them back on. At least the external molds are completely intact. In all of the following pictures, internal molds come first, external molds second. Cephalon #1, the one-eyed wonder. Cephalon #2 - missing both of the eyes. Sad, it would have been so nice too... Then came the pygidia - four of them! I believe that they are all the same species as the cephalons - A. zerinae - but I could be wrong. I'm sure the trilo-experts here can help me with that. Pygidium #1, the nicest one. Pygidium #2 - this little guy got a bit beat up when the rock split. Pygidium #3 - little bugger needs to be prepped a bit. Pygidium #4 - the internal mold of this cracked in half - and it's missing a piece. This one's a neat little trace fossil. It looks like an infilled burrow to me, but I'll set up a separate thread for that - with better pictures. And this very odd little guy. Another one I'll have to take better pictures on, and as soon as the matrix is pared down a bit I will scrutinize it under a microscope. It's not very evident, but it feathers out at the right end. It could be mineral staining or something, but I'm not sure yet. Then the stuff I couldn't bear to leave behind. I was trying to keep my collecting to new stuff, but some of them just sneaked in there... I feel like we've all experienced this before. Orbiculoidea sp. brachiopod. Lingula sp. brachiopod. Leiopteria rubra bivalve. It was a pretty good day. On top of these finds, I brought back some promising shale pieces to look for micro-fossils in - and a few more interesting unknowns.     Hidden Fossil

    Hi, I found this beautiful little asterophyllites yesterday and noticed that there seems to be some rock covering part of the fossil. I'd like to be able to remove the rock and expose the fossil. It's very solid and too thin for any of my chisels. Would an air-abrasive pen or dental equipment work? Perhaps professional help would be appropriate.
  16. Hi! I'm looking for advice. I found this fossil yesterday and like so many others I find it's on an unstable piece and has a major crack through it. I'd hate to coat it with anything as I prefer to keep things natural. Yet I'm also worried that it might just fall apart on its own or from handling. What's my best course of action? Any advice/help is appreciated.

    Odd Pennsylvanian shale impressions

    This is probably an extremely long shot, but I wanted to post these interesting pics in case they ring a bell for anyone. These were all found in a Late Pennsylvanian shale associated with the Herrin Coal, which generally preserves plant fossils. I’m not sure if they are fossils or diagenetic artifacts- the shale is baked on the spoil pile which can introduce unusual shapes. The first one is a strange pattern- it appears to be asymmetrical and doesn’t immediately match any plant parts I’m familiar with, but there are so many possibilities I might be missing something. It’s 5 mm wide. This next one is part and counterpart of a smooth cylindrical impression- the entire visible impression is about 15 mm long. These next three could be a result of the heating of the shale, which can produce bubbles and smooth surfaces like these, but it would unusual for that to be the case without any other distortion around it. The final impression comes from the other side of one of the pieces above and is similarly smooth-walled, but only a small portion is visible.

    Devonian (Givetian) Ammonoid ID Help

    I collected these last weekend from the Millboro Shale (Devonian: Givetian) in Highland County, Virginia, USA. I cant seem to identify these and not familiar with Ammonoid taxobases, not sure where to start. I did go through House, M.R., 1962, Observations on the Ammonoid Succession of the North American Devonian. House does cover the Millboro Shale but only lists occurrences of Sobolewia virginiana, Tornoceras uniangulare, Maenioceras sp. I dont have access to the Treatise part K so any help IDing these would be amazing!
  19. These are two specimens I have found that I can’t confidently identify. I don’t know exactly where they are from but the sedimentary rock they are preserved in is likely from the Mississippian. I live in Northeast Alabama where there are quarries that extract shale and limestone from the Mississippian. Since I don’t know the exact locality they came from I cannot provide an exact time period. One is a white, wedge shaped fossil that I speculate might be a leaf. The other I am unsure of if it is even a fossil but it appears to be a fish, but it could just be crystals that formed in the shale.

    Yunnanozoon or something else?

    The longest one is roughly 2cm long. I’ve counted 12 on the rock, which itself is about 5cm long. All I know is that it’s from the Maotianshan shales in China. I was told it’s a Yunnanozoon, but I believe this is incorrect as the person I got it from is often wrong with their identifications.

    Mystery Huge Anomalocaris Appendange?

    Hi, I have this mystery piece of what appears to be anomalocarid appendage of sorts. The problem is I did not receive any information with it and it came out of an old collection from Maine, Usa. I'm not to sure what else it could be from the appearance but I am also very uncertain of the exact species. The piece of a very laminated sparkly shale If I had to guess it could've came from either Burgess Shale, Utah, or Nevada but I not sure what locality it could be from so if anyone if familiar with these shales and can tell from the preservation it would be a huge help, thank you and looking forward to seeing peoples opinions, and if anyone can recommend an expert to show that would also help.
  22. Here is an odd-ball I found yesterday. Recently I found a new marine / brackish layer of dark gray shale. My first discovery was two root pieces, which I'll showcase at another time. I also found a tiny Glabrocingulum grayvillense (gastropod) there. This particular rock had a brachiopod on it, and I was getting a closer look. The matrix was soft enough to stab with my tweezers, so I was digging around the margins. This very tiny piece appeared that looked very interesting, and even more complex under the microscope. It's very small. The further out photo shows it with a 1 cm scale. I feel like this is a known marine animal shape, but It's not apparent to me. You can see the opposite part of it on the top right of the following photo as well.
  23. I'm getting better with plants, but I haven't really found anything that says seed or spore pod to me. This one finally does. It's a small depression with texture. I wish I had the other side, but I didn't see it. This was from a layer with many ferns, Calamites, and Cordaites. Concretions are about non-existent here. In fact, there may be none at all. It's the texture in the depression that has me thinking seed pod mold.
